Visual acuity immediately following phacoemulsification with subconjunctival anesthesia.

The authors attempted to discover the quality of vision experienced immediately after cataract surgery by those patients receiving subconjunctival anesthesia and no postoperative patching. Eighty-five consecutive patients who underwent phacoemulsification were studied. Anesthesia was topical tetracaine followed by a subconjunctival injection of a lidocaine-bupivicaine hydrochloride-hyaluronidase mixture. Visual acuities were measured within a half hour after surgery and at 1 day postoperatively. Immediate postoperative visual acuities ranged from 20/25 to 20/200. Visual acuities were 20/40 or

Effect of trichiasis surgery on visual acuity outcomes in Ethiopia.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of trichiasis surgery on visual acuity. METHODS: A total of 439 participants in the Surgery for Trichiasis, Antibiotics to Prevent Recurrence (STAR) trial had visual and subjective concerns measured before and 6 months after surgery. Trichiasis surgery was performed in at least 1 eye by integrated eye care workers. Visual acuity was measured using illiterate E versions of Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study charts with standardized, forced-choice procedures. Improvement was defined as improvement in visual acuity greater than 1 line (5 letters). RES

Vision through cataracts.

Contrast thresholds for a range of different spatial frequencies were compared with "acuity" tests for 10 subjects with uniocular senile cataract. The results indicate that the magnitude and extent of the intra-resolution limit abnormality vary dramatically in cataract subjects and that, for some subjects, vision is abnormal for objects of all sizes. This finding indicates that the present acuity evaluation of vision with cataracts is inadequate because, in some cases, it grossly overestimates the nature of the visual world of the cataract patient.

Acuity, ophthalmoscopy, and visually evoked potentials in the prediction of visual outcome in infants with bilateral optic nerve hypoplasia.

PURPOSE: To determine whether Teller Acuity Cards, transient visually evoked potentials (VEPs), and optic disc size estimated from ophthalmoscopy were predictive of acuity outcome in infants and young children with bilateral optic nerve hypoplasia (ONH). METHODS: Twenty-eight infants (mean age, 7 months) with bilateral ONH underwent clinical assessment, including ophthalmoscopy. All but a few of these patients underwent neuroimaging studies, analysis of transient VEPs to multiple stimuli, and repeated acuity assessment. Acuity outcome was assessed, on average, 28 months later. RESULTS: Acuit

Paranasal sinus mucoceles with visual disturbance.

OBJECTIVE: Paranasal sinus mucoceles may cause visual disturbance in patients because of their close proximity to the orbit. We aimed to investigate visual prognosis to determine whether it is influenced by the interval before surgery and the severity of visual disturbance, and to heighten the physician's awareness of the occurrence of this disease. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed eight surgically treated patients with paranasal sinus mucoceles accompanied by visual disturbances between March 2005 and January 2009, and examined the visual acuity outcome of the patients. RESULTS: Four pa

[The importance of the interference fringe visual acuity in the indication of a cataract-extraction (author's transl)].

100 patients have been examined before and after cataract-extraction using the Retinal Visual Acuity Tester, Takata, Japan. Laser produced interference fringes are formed on the retina, as a result the visual acuity can be determined easily before the operation. -- With immature cataracts we obtained a good correlation between the preoperative interference fringe visual acuity and the postoperative visual acuity tested by Landoltrings. Therefore, it can be differentiated whether worse visual acuity is caused by the cataract or by a retinal disease.

Prediction of visual function in eyes with mild to moderate posterior pole residua of retinopathy of prematurity. Cryotherapy for Retinopathy of Prematurity Cooperative Group.

OBJECTIVE: The Multicenter Trial of Cryotherapy for Retinopathy of Prematurity (CRYO-ROP) assigned eyes with macular heterotopia to the "favorable" outcome category and eyes with retinal fold involving the macula to the "unfavorable" outcome category. This binary assignment did not agree well with measured visual acuity outcome. We tested the hypothesis that rating structural outcome on a continuum from less to more severe would improve prediction of visual acuity in eyes with macular heterotopia or retinal fold. DESIGN: Fundus photographs of the 69 eyes in the CRYO-ROP trial that had macular

Bilateral Optic Disc Edema in the Course of Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension: A Case Report.

Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is a rare disease characterized by elevated cerebrospinal fluid pressure in the absence of structural changes in the brain. One of the main symptoms of IIH is deterioration of visual acuity with evidence of swelling of the optic nerve disc. Other complaints reported by patients may also include headaches, dizziness, and tinnitus. A 46-year-old female patient presented to the ophthalmology outpatient clinic because of bilateral visual acuity deterioration. The patient had previously been treated for hypertension and dizziness, and she also reported inc
