This retrospective cohort study used electronic health records to explore the effect of race/ethnicity, insurance status, and area deprivation on post-discharge outcomes in older patients undergoing hip fracture surgery between 2015 and 2018 (N = 1,150). Inverse probability of treatment weight-adjusted regression analysis was used to identify the effects of the predictors on outcomes. White patients had higher 90- and 365-day readmission risks than Black patients and higher all-period readmissions than the Other racial/ethnic (Hispanic, Asian, American Indian, and Multicultural) group (p < .00

To examine causes of newborn hospital readmission and morbidity related to early nursery discharge, we reviewed the charts of 664 newborns readmitted from home under the age of 15 days, between 1993 and 1995. Early discharge (ED) was defined as nursery length of stay of < or = 2 days. Morbidity related to ED: onset of symptoms within 1 day of ED; and in diseases with insidious onset: serum bilirubin level > 20 mg/dL (340 mumol/L), or dehydration following poor breastfeeding since birth. Seventeen percent of all readmitted infants had ED-related morbidity; 9% had major morbidity. Onset of sympt

Simple criteria were used to select a low-risk group of patients after acute myocardial infarction. The criteria depended on the presence or absence of diabetes, pulmonary oedema, serious rhythm disorders, and recurrent cardiac pain. Patients in the low-risk category with a suitable home environment were discharged from hospital after five to seven days (mean 6.2 days); they constituted 47% of the 267 hospital survivors over 18 months. Mortality in the selected patients was 2.4% at six weeks and 7% at one year. Most complications preventing early discharge were identified on the first day. Pro

The Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services has identified readmission as an important quality metric in assessing hospital performance and value of care. The aim of this study was to quantify the impact of "care fragmentation" on transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) outcomes. Readmission to nonindex hospitals was defined as any hospital other than the hospital where the TAVI was performed. In this multicenter, population-based, nationally representative study, a nationally weighted cohort of US adult patients who underwent TAVI in the National Readmission Database between 01/01/2010

OBJECTIVE: The repair of unruptured intracranial aneurysms has increased since 2000. In this study, we analyzed the Nationwide Readmission Database (NRD) to determine the rate of 90-day readmission. Our objective is to examine readmission trends after unruptured aneurysm repair.
METHODS: This study used the 2013 and 2014 NRD. Patient data included standard demographic, comorbidity, and payer information. We selected patients who had undergone microsurgical or endovascular repair for a nonruptured aneurysm. We excluded patients who were under 18 years of age, had a subarachnoid hemorrhage, or

BACKGROUND: Given the association between geriatric syndrome and hospital readmission, we evaluated the suitability of geriatric syndrome screening for care (GSC) in identifying readmission risk and suggested the appropriate time for GSC.
METHODS: GSC considering cognitive impairment, depression, polypharmacy (five or more medications), functional mobility, dysphagia, malnutrition, pain, and incontinence was performed among 2,663 general ward inpatients aged 65 years or older within 48 hours after admission and again before discharge between November 2016 and October 2017. From each patient,

BACKGROUND: Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) is a debilitating disease process accounting for 5% of strokes. Although improvements in care have reduced the case-fatality rates, patients have an increased risk of neurological and medical complications after discharge. Additionally, the readmission rates have been increasingly used as a metric for patient care quality.
METHODS: In the present study, we reviewed the medical records of 206 patients who had been treated for aSAH at the University of Virginia from 2011 to 2018 to identify the causes and predictors of readmission.
RESULTS:

BACKGROUND: Readmission penalties are central to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) efforts to improve patient outcomes and reduce health care spending. However, many clinicians believe that readmission metrics may unfairly penalize low-mortality hospitals because mortality and readmission are competing risks. The objective of this study is to compare hospital ranking based on a composite outcome of death or readmission versus readmission alone.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective observational study of 344,565 admissions for acute myocardial infarction (AMI), congestive h

Background/Objectives: With the global rise in chronic diseases among older adults, rehabilitation services have become essential, particularly for those with cerebrovascular and central nervous system (CNS) disorders, which lead to significant long-term disabilities. To determine the impact of designated rehabilitation medical institutions on the readmission rates of older patients with CNS disorders who receive surgical interventions. Methods: This was a population-based cohort study. Data was obtained from the National Health Insurance Service database (2002-2019). Fifteen designated instit

BACKGROUND: Conventional postdischarge monitoring for heart failure (HF) with reduced ejection fraction focuses on readmission and mortality, but these end points may not summarize cumulative patient-centered health. We examined whether secular trends in conventional end points translated into improved days alive and out of hospital (DAOH), and whether trends differed by age, sex, and ethnicity.
METHODS: Using the Singapore Cardiovascular Longitudinal Outcomes Database, we conducted a population-based cohort study of patients discharged alive after first HF with reduced ejection fraction hosp

BACKGROUND: Ventral hernia repairs (VHR) are common surgical procedures, yet patients remain at risk for serious postoperative complications, including hospital readmission secondary to venous thromboembolism (VTE). While minimally invasive surgical (MIS) approaches have shown benefits in reducing other complications and hospital length of stay (LOS), their impact on VTE-related readmissions has been less extensively studied.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study utilized the Nationwide Readmissions Database (NRD) from 2016 to 2022 to identify adult patients undergoing VHR, categorizing th

BACKGROUND: Readmission rates as high as 20% have been reported after ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA) in children, with obstruction and dehydration as the most commonly listed reasons. We hypothesized that a diverting ileostomy contributes to unplanned readmission after IPAA creation.
METHODS: Children (age <18) who underwent IPAA creation from January 2007 to August 2018 at two affiliated institutions were reviewed. Patient demographics, operative details, and post-operative length of stay (LOS) were abstracted. Unplanned readmission within 30 days and details on patient readmission were…

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the rate, causes, and risk factors of unplanned hospital readmission after spine fusion for the treatment of adult spinal deformity.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Hospital readmissions in the elderly are common, and with increasing emphasis on the quality of health care, readmission rates are used to assess hospital performance. Spine surgery has seen rapidly increased utilization during the past 2 decades. Surgical treatments of complex spinal deformity are known to have higher rates of complications than other types of spine surg

BACKGROUND: Although adhesive small-bowel obstruction (ASBO) is frequently managed nonoperatively, little is known regarding outcomes on readmission following this approach. Using a large population-based dataset, we evaluated risk factors for operative intervention and mortality at readmission in patients with ASBO who were initially managed nonoperatively.
METHODS: The ASBO patients were identified in the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development 2007 to 2014 patient discharge database. Patients who were managed operatively at index admission or had an International Cla

INTRODUCTION: The development of new prostheses with improved osseointegration, bone preservation, and reduced cost has renewed interest in uncemented total knee arthroplasty (UCTKA). In the current study, we aimed to: (1) assess demographic data of patients who were and were not readmitted and (2) identify patient-specific risk factors associated with readmission.
METHODS: A retrospective query from the PearlDiver database was performed from January 1, 2015, to October 31, 2020. International Classification of Disease, Ninth Revision (ICD-9), ICD-10, or Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) c

Background Sepsis survivors remain vulnerable to recurrent hospitalization after discharge, yet factors associated with longer-term sepsis-associated readmission are incompletely understood. We evaluated temporal patterns and factors associated with 90-day sepsis-associated readmission following adult sepsis hospitalization. Methods We conducted a multicenter retrospective cohort study using de-identified electronic health record and administrative data from 50 hospitals between January 2018 and December 2025. Adults hospitalized with sepsis were eligible. Index hospitalizations in which the p

Background Thirty-day readmission has become a significant health care metric reflecting the quality of care and on the cost of service delivery. There is little data on the impact of complications following skull base surgery (SBS) on emergency readmission. Identifying modifiable risk factors for readmission may improve care and reduce cost. Design The study was designed as a single-center retrospective cohort study. Methods Records for a consecutive series of 165 patients who underwent open or endoscopic SBS by a single surgeon reviewed. Patients with pituitary adenoma were excluded. The

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine whether Magnet® and non-Magnet hospitals differ in the occurrence of 30-day readmission and mortality rates among the Medicare population when considering community health factors.
BACKGROUND: Magnet hospitals have shown favorable outcomes regarding 30-day readmission and mortality; however, previous research has not evaluated whether the hospital community influences the likelihood of the patient being readmitted to a hospital or how Magnet facilities may mitigate potential mortality risks.
METHOD: This study used a cross-sectional study des
