Columellar strut grafts versus septal extension grafts during rhinoplasty for airway function, patient satisfaction and tip support.

IMPORTANCE: Different techniques exist to provide tip support in rhinoplasty. There is little evidence to provide a consensus on the most effective choice. OBJECTIVE: Evaluating columellar strut graft (CSG) and septal extension grafts (SEG) for their influence on airway function, patient satisfaction and tip support. DESIGN, SETTINGS AND PARTICIPANTS: A retrospective cohort study was undertaken on 165 adult patients who underwent open rhinoplasty with either a CSG or SEG, from February 2012 to August 2019 in a single tertiary facial-plastic practice in Sydney, Australia. Operations were for …

Transitioning to telegenetics in the COVID-19 era: Patient satisfaction with remote genetic counseling in adult neurology.

The COVID-19 pandemic rapidly changed genetic counseling services across the United States. At the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), a large academic hospital in an urban setting, nearly all genetic counseling (GC) visits for adult-onset disorders within the Department of Neurology were conducted via secure videoconferencing (telegenetics) or telephone between March and December 2020. Although telemedicine services have been steadily emerging, many clinical programs, including the neurogenetics program at UPenn, had not built infrastructure or widely utilized these services prior to the pand

Patient satisfaction and efficacy of calcipotriol plus betamethasone dipropionate gel in plaque psoriasis patients with poor adherence.

Poor adherence to treatment makes achievement of expected therapeutic outcomes more difficult, especially in chronic disorders like psoriasis. There are several critical factors that affect adherence, including therapeutic efficacy, patient satisfaction, patient treatment preferences and ease of application, especially in topical therapy. The fixed combination of calcipotriol plus betamethasone dipropionate in a gel formulation (Cal/BDP gel) has been recommended as a first-line topical treatment for mild to moderate plaque. To examine whether Cal/BDP gel can effectively improve treatment adher…

Outcome measures reflecting patient satisfaction following decompression surgery for lumbar spinal stenosis: Comparison of major outcome measures.

OBJECTIVE: Decompression surgery is the standard treatment for lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS); however, despite the good clinical outcomes reported for this procedure, a relatively high dissatisfaction rate has been reported. We hypothesized that the previously used outcome measures do not accurately reflect patient satisfaction (PS). This study aimed to examine which outcome measures reflect PS accurately in patients undergoing decompression for LSS. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with LSS treated with lumbar decompression surgery between January 2014 and March 2016 were enrolled if they had t…

Investigating determinants for patient satisfaction in women receiving epidural analgesia for labour pain: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Epidural analgesia is a popular choice for labour pain relief. Patient satisfaction is an important patient-centric outcome because it can significantly influence both mother and child. However, there is limited evidence in the correlations between clinical determinants and patient satisfaction. We aim to investigate clinical covariates that are associated with low patient satisfaction in parturients receiving labour neuraxial analgesia. METHODS: After institutional ethics approval was obtained, we conducted a retrospective cohort study using electronic and corresponding hardcopy …

Patient satisfaction after total knee arthroplasty is better in patients with pre-operative complete joint space collapse.

AIM OF THE STUDY: To determine if pre-operative radiologic minimal joint space width (mJSW) is related to the outcome of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) (primary hypothesis). Likewise, the aim was to test if pre-operative mJSW is related to prosthesis survival (secondary hypothesis). METHODS: A retrospective comparative analysis was performed. Group 1 was comprised of patients with pre-operative mJSW 0-1 mm. Group 2 were patients with pre-operative mJSW ≥ 2 mm. The clinical outcome was determined with the Western Ontario and MacMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) score pre-operativ

Percutaneous Ultrasonic Tenotomy Reduces Insertional Achilles Tendinopathy Pain With High Patient Satisfaction and a Low Complication Rate.

Due to the novelty of percutaneous ultrasonic tenotomy, the risks and benefits of this minimally invasive procedure for insertional Achilles tendinopathy pain have only been examined in case studies and retrospective chart reviews for other diagnoses. This retrospective chart review over a 3.5-year period identified 34 patients with insertional Achilles tendinopathy who had percutaneous ultrasonic tenotomy (mean age ± SD, 52.2 ± 11.6 years; mean body mass index, 32.9 ± 7.5 kg/m2 ; 62% female). This procedure reduced the rate of moderate/severe pain from 68% at baseline to 15% at the long-term
