Second-order motion shifts perceived position.

Many studies have documented that first-order motion influences perceived position. Here, we show that second-order (contrast defined) motion influences the perceived positions of stationary objects as well. We used a Gabor pattern as our second-order stimulus, which consisted of a drifting sinusoidal contrast modulation of a dynamic random-dot background; this second-order carrier was enveloped by a static Gaussian contrast modulation. Two vertically aligned Gabors had carrier motion in opposite directions. Subjects judged the relative positions of the Gabors' static envelopes. The positions

Orthographic effects in the word substitutions of aphasic patients: an epidemic of right neglect dyslexia?

Aphasic patients with reading impairments frequently substitute incorrect real words for target words when reading aloud. Many of these word substitutions have substantial orthographic overlap with their targets and are classified as "visual errors" (i.e., sharing 50% of targets' letters in the same relative position). Fifteen chronic aphasic patients read a battery of words and non-words; non-word reading was poor for all patients, and more than 50% of errors on words involved the substitution of a non-target word. An investigation of the factors conditioning these word substitutions, as well

Seahorse wins all races: hippocampus participates in both linear and non-linear visual discrimination learning.

Consistent with configural/conjunctive theories of the hippocampus, we report that rats trained on the non-linear transverse patterning discrimination problem (A+ versus B-, B+ versus C-, and C+ versus A) displayed retrograde amnesia when the hippocampus was later damaged. They also failed to relearn the solution to this problem. Damage to the hippocampus following training also produced retrograde amnesia in rats trained on a set of elemental discrimination problems (A+ versus B-, C+ versus D-, and E+ versus F-) that could be solved based on the associative strengths of the individual choice

Shading and texture: separate information channels with a common adaptation mechanism?

We outline a scheme for the way in which early vision may handle information about shading (luminance modulation, LM) and texture (contrast modulation, CM). Previous work on the detection of gratings has found no sub-threshold summation, and no cross-adaptation, between LM and CM patterns. This strongly implied separate channels for the detection of LM and CM structure. However, we now report experiments in which adapting to LM (or CM) gratings creates tilt aftereffects of similar magnitude on both LM and CM test gratings, and reduces the perceived strength (modulation depth) of LM and CM grat

Capture of the visual direction of monocular objects by adjacent binocular objects.

Investigations of binocular visual direction have concentrated mainly on stationary objects. Eye positions were generally not measured and binocular fixation was assumed to be perfect. During the viewing of stationary objects, vergence errors are not negligible but small. During the viewing of moving objects, however, errors in binocular fixation are much larger. Existing rules for binocular visual direction were examined under the latter, more demanding viewing conditions. Eye movements were measured objectively by the scleral coil technique. Subjects viewed a large stereogram in which the ha

The effects of spatial filtering and contrast reduction on visual search times in good and poor readers.

Recent experiments with reading disabled children have shown that image blurring (produced with frosted acetate overlays) results in an immediate benefit in search performance, eye movement pattern and reading comprehension. This suggests that the contrast and spatial frequency content of visual stimuli are important factors for these children. In the present experiment, spatial frequency filtering and contrast reduction were employed to determine whether either of these factors contributes to the beneficial effects observed. Letter arrays were spatially filtered to produce low pass (< 3.5 c/d

Different uses of chromatic signals in patients with congenital and acquired colour vision deficiencies.

Chromatic signals can be used to generate perceived colour and also to detect spatially structured objects defined only by chromatic differences. These two attributes have previously been investigated in dichromats and cerebral achromatopsic patients using a new colour vision test developed at City University that makes possible the isolation of pure chromatic signals (Barbur et al. Proc. R. Soc. London B 258, 327-334, 1994). We have investigated acquired colour vision changes in a 69-year-old patient, after conventional colour vision tests gave ambiguous results. His ability to detect an obje

Signal-detection analysis of the Müller-Lyer and the Horizontal-Vertical illusions.

Perceptual error in the Müller-Lyer and the Horizontal-Vertical illusions was quantified using nonparametric signal-detection measures of sensitivity and response bias. Sensitivity scores were positively related to signal strength with the greatest values observed for the strongest signals. Sensitivity at each signal strength did not differ between the two illusions. Response-bias scores were inversely related to signal strength, with the most conservative biases observed for the strongest signals. Response biases for each signal strength were significantly more conservative for the Horizontal

Prosopagnosia: a face-specific disorder.

A follow-up study of a patient, WJ with a very severe prosopagnosia is reported. After a stroke he became a farmer and acquired a flock of sheep. He learn to recognize and name many of his sheep, and his performance on tests of recognition memory and paired-associate learning for sheep was significantly better than on comparable tests using human face stimuli. It is concluded that in some instances prosopagnosia can be a face-specific disorder.

Rapid sequential processing in dyslexic and ordinary readers.

42 dyslexic and 42 ordinary readers were given a rapid sequential short-term memory task using materials adapted from the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities Visual Sequential Memory subset. Dyslexic readers performed at a similar level to ordinary readers. In Study 2, the same readers were given a 10-piece form board to complete as quickly as possible. Dyslexic readers were significantly slower on this task. Since short-term memory was not a feature of the second task, it was reasoned that short-term memory problems were unlikely to be a feature of dyslexic's performances on rapid seq

Self-induced pattern-sensitive epilepsy in childhood.

We studied five children (1 boy and 4 girls) with self-induced pattern-sensitive epilepsy. All patients had refractory epilepsy with multiform, though mainly myoclonic, seizures and medium grade to severe mental retardation. Spontaneously self-induced seizures were documented in all cases by EEG. All the patients underwent full neurophysiological assessment (baseline EEG recording, with activation: eyelid closed, hyperventilation, ILS, EEG during the randomized presentation of 3 types of spatial structured stimuli, VEP-F and VEP-PR). The pattern that triggered the EEG anomalies was highly spec

Pattern ERG: effects of reference electrode site, stimulus mode and check size.

We studied monocular pattern ERG (PERG) in 10 normal subjects and a patient with optic neuritis. No clinically significant PERG could be recorded from the occluded eye with any reference (ipsilateral ear or temple, or midfrontal), indicating that cross-contamination is not present with binocular testing. Ipsilateral temple reference minimized VEP (P100/N100) contribution to the PERG N95 which occurred with ipsilateral ear or midfrontal reference. The conclusions were confirmed by results from the patient, who had marked monocular delay of a normal amplitude P100. Twenty-four subjects were test

Visual persistence and adult dyslexia.

Visual persistence was investigated in adults with and without dyslexia in order to determine whether the adults with dyslexia demonstrate problems similar to those found in childhood dyslexia. Using a temporal separation threshold measure and procedures derived from signal detection theory, sensitivity to sequentially presented form information was determined for the two types of adults. The results showed that the sensitivity of the adults with dyslexia was impaired relative to that of the nondisabled adults when parts of a test stimulus were presented to adjacent retinal areas. This result

Retinal potentials in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma: physiological evidence for temporal frequency tuning deficits.

The pattern-reversal retinal potential is a bio-electrical signal which can be recorded from the cornea of the human eye when a phase-alternating (contrast-reversing) pattern is viewed. The PRRP is correlated with activity of the retinal ganglion cells and visual diseases which affect the proximal retinal layers (such as optic atrophy and optic neuritis) and cause significant alterations in the waveform of the human PRRP. This study examined the PRRP in 32 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and 32 age-matched visual normals (AMVNs). Counterphasing (2, 4, 8 and 16 reversals/sec) c

Development of remote memory loss in patients with Huntington's disease.

Patients recently diagnosed with Huntington's Disease (RHD) were compared to three tests of remote memory to advanced Huntington's Disease patients and to control subjects. The RHD patients demonstrated a remote memory impairment that was particularly evident when no cues were given to aid recall. Thus, early in the disease process, HD patients not only are impaired in the acquisition of new materials but have difficulty recalling remote events. It was also significant that, like the advanced patients, the deficits of the RHD patients extended over many decades, with approximately equivalent l

Evolving object concepts in the adult brain: An electrophysiological investigation.

This study investigated how the gradual acquisition of object meaning influences different phases of object recognition. Using an interleaved learning and testing procedure, participants were repeatedly exposed to unfamiliar, rare objects while learning about their meaning and function. Across multiple test sessions, event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded to examine changes in early perceptual processing (P1) and later integrative phases of object recognition (N400, late positive complex/LPC) for initially unfamiliar versus well-known objects. Initially, behavioral and ERP differe

Not-so-working Memory: Drift in Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Pattern Representations during Maintenance Predicts Errors in a Visual Working Memory Task.

Working memory (WM) is critical to many aspects of cognition, but it frequently fails. Much WM research has focused on capacity limits, but even for single, simple features, the fidelity of individual representations is limited. Why is this? One possibility is that, because of neural noise and interference, neural representations do not remain stable across a WM delay, nor do they simply decay, but instead, they may "drift" over time to a new, less accurate state. We tested this hypothesis in a functional magnetic resonance imaging study of a match/nonmatch WM recognition task for a single ite

fMRI characterization of visual working memory recognition.

Encoding and maintenance of information in visual working memory have been extensively studied, highlighting the crucial and capacity-limiting role of fronto-parietal regions. In contrast, the neural basis of recognition in visual working memory has remained largely unspecified. Cognitive models suggest that recognition relies on a matching process that compares sensory information with the mental representations held in memory. To characterize the neural basis of recognition we varied both the need for recognition and the degree of similarity between the probe item and the memory contents, wh

Role of fusiform and anterior temporal cortical areas in facial recognition.

Recent fMRI studies suggest that cortical face processing extends well beyond the fusiform face area (FFA), including unspecified portions of the anterior temporal lobe. However, the exact location of such anterior temporal region(s), and their role during active face recognition, remain unclear. Here we demonstrate that (in addition to FFA) a small bilateral site in the anterior tip of the collateral sulcus ('AT'; the anterior temporal face patch) is selectively activated during recognition of faces but not houses (a non-face object). In contrast to the psychophysical prediction that inverted

The effect of recognizability on figure-ground processing: does it affect parsing or only figure selection?

Though figure-ground assignment has been shown to be probably affected by recognizability, it appears sensible that object recognition must follow at least the earlier process of figure-ground segregation. To examine whether or not rudimentary object recognition could, counterintuitively, start even before the completion of the stage of parsing in which figure-ground segregation is done, participants were asked to respond, in a go/no-go fashion, whenever any out of 16 alternative connected patterns (that constituted familiar stimuli in the upright orientation) appeared.
