A 35-year-old Malaysian man presented with rapid onset of flaccid quadriparesis associated with nausea and vomiting. General blood tests revealed severe hypokalaemia (serum potassium 1.5 mmol/L) and hypophosphataemia (serum phosphate 0.29 mmol/L) as a potential cause of the flaccid paralysis. Arterial blood gases showed mixed acid base disturbance of respiratory alkalosis and metabolic acidosis with hyperlactataemia. Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP) was suspected as the underlying cause of this presentation and thyroid function tests showed severe hyperthyroid results (free T4 > 77.2 pmol/L

The first case of Barrett's oesophagus with chronic inflammation having predominantly (> 50%) Mott cells, i.e. plasma cells with stored immunoglobulins, known as Russell bodies, is reported. Hypokalemic periodic paralysis (HypoPP) is a channel disorder caused primarily by mutations in the human skeletal muscle alpha1 subunit (CACNA1S) of the dihydropyridine-sensitive calcium channel. We report a 16-year-old Japanese male with lipoid proteinosis showing various skin manifestations. The patient was born to nonconsanguineous … eyelids were noted. A skin biopsy showed deposits of homogeneous hyaline-like material, positive on periodic acid-Schiff staining, throughout the dermis, particularly around small blood vessels. It is noteworthy that a range of characteristic skin lesions can be present in a patient with lipoid proteinosis even with mild systemic involvement.

Tinea unguium (TU) is very common in tropical and subtropical regions. An inexpensive, quick and sensitive test is essential for screening the nail specimens. Continuous measurements of intraduodenal pH changes were made in five healthy conscious dogs by means of a miniature pH electrode inserted into the duodenum through a chronically implanted duodenal cannula.
