CO2 laser evaporation of oral lichen planus.

Oral lichen planus is a relatively common disease of the oral mucosa. The buccal mucosa and lateral border of the tongue are mostly involved, although the condition can occur anywhere in the oral cavity. The erosive type in particular can cause spontaneous pain during eating. In the period from 1975 to 2003, a group of 21 patients with 39 lesions of oral lichen planus which caused pain, even after conservative therapy, were treated with CO2 laser evaporation. During a follow-up period of 1-18 years (mean 8 years) 21 patients were pain free (85%) and 6 patients (15%) experienced painful recurre

Management of pemphigus disease in pregnancy.

Pemphigus can cause complications during pregnancy and may cause serious harm to a fetus. For this study, a comprehensive review of common treatments of pemphigus and their adverse effects associated with pregnancy and male fertility was conducted. We concluded that a period of remission with minimal or no therapy before conception could significantly reduce the risk of the disease flaring up, at least in the first trimester. The period of remission causes a delay in the flare-up of the disease, which means lower cumulative doses and the prevention of possible congenital abnormalities caused b

Epidemiology of cauda equina and conus medullaris lesions.

The epidemiology of cauda equina and conus medullaris lesions is not well known, and this study aimed to provide further information on this topic. In the period 1996-2004, patients fulfilling the clinical, electrodiagnostic, and radiological criteria for such lesions were identified. For cauda equina/conus medullaris lesions an annual incidence rate of 3.4/1.5 per million, and period prevalence of 8.9/4.5 per 100,000 population were calculated. The values obtained are probably valid estimates of the incidence and prevalence of these lesions in developed countries.

The Efficacy of Pulsed Dye Laser Pretreated With or Without Local Anesthetic on Patients Presenting With Erythema of Face, Neck, Chest, and Extremities.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Erythema is one of the most common cosmetic concerns and usually responds well to pulsed dye laser (PDL) treatment. As this laser can cause significant discomfort, topical anesthesia is sometimes offered. However, it is still uncertain whether topical anesthetics can affect the outcome of the laser therapy. We performed a retrospective single site study to compare the efficacy of PDL for the treatment of erythema in patients with and without pretreatment with topical anesthetic. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: A chart review was performed and patients who presen

Resistant non-segmental vitiligo is difficult to be treated. Ablative erbium-YAG (Er:YAG) laser has been used in the treatment of vitiligo, but the ablation of entire epidermis frustrated the compliance of patients. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of fractional Er:YAG laser followed by topical betamethasone and narrow band ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) therapy in the treatment of resistant non-segmental vitiligo. The vitiligo lesions of each enrolled patient were divided into four treatment parts, which were all irradiated with NB-UVB. Three parts were, respectively, treated w

Optimizing topical antifungal therapy for superficial cutaneous fungal infections: focus on topical naftifine for cutaneous dermatophytosis.

Superficial cutaneous fungal infections (SCFIs) are commonly encountered in clinical practice in the United States, and comprise infections of the skin by dermatophytes and yeasts. The most common organisms causing SCFI are dermatophytes, especially Trichophyton spp. With the exception of onchomycosis and tinea capitis, most cases of SCFIs are amenable to properly selected topical antifungal therapy used over an adequate period of time.

A variety of topical antifungal agents are available for the treatment of SCFIs, and they encompass a few major chemical classes: the polyenes (ie, nys

Clinical Outcomes of Topical Bevacizumab for the Treatment of Corneal Neovascularization.

Background and objective In corneal neovascularization, the peri-corneal vascular structure grows into a normally avascular cornea. This is due to an imbalance between the angiogenic and anti-angiogenic factors that sustain corneal transparency. There are various etiologies of this condition, and they can be divided into infective or non-infective causes, such as inflammation, trauma, or surgical causes. Corneal neovascularization has been shown to improve with the current treatments using steroids and anti-vascular endothelial growth factors. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of

Current State of Nanomedicines in the Treatment of Topical Infectious Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Topical infections, involving a number of diseases such as impetigo, eczema, pustular acne, psoriasis and infected seborrheic dermatitis are one among the many challenges to health which stand out for their profound impact on human species. The treatment of topical infections has always been a difficult proposition because of the lack of efficacy of existing anti-infectives, longer period of treatment and yet incomplete recovery. The increasing emergence of antibiotic resistant bacterial strains like Staphylococcus aureus, Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Pseu
