The evolution of the critical period for language acquisition.

Evidence suggests that there is a critical, or at least a sensitive, period for language acquisition, which ends around puberty. The existence of this period is explained by an evolutionary model which assumes that (a) linguistic ability is in principle (if not in practice) measurable, and (b) the amount of language controlled by an individual conferred selective advantage on it. In this model, the language faculty is seen as adaptive, favoured by natural selection, while the critical period for language acquisition itself is not an adaptation, but arises from the interplay of genetic factors

[Creatine-kinase MM in the perinatal period].

One hundred eight newborns (gestational age 36 + 1.8 weeks and birth weight 2860 +/- 240 g) had muscle type Creatine-Kinase activity (CK-MM) assayed immediately after birth (CK-I) and serially at 6-10 h (CK-II), 20-30 h (CK-III) and 40-60 h (CK-IV) of age. Using statistical Regression analysis, CK-MM levels were correlated to four perinatal parameters: gestational age, birth weight, neonatal acidosis (pH less than 7.15), mode of delivery (vaginal/cesarean section). It was observed that CK-MM activity was dependent on gestational age and correlated to the mode of delivery at time III (600 U/l)

Hyperthyroidism with gynaecomastia, galactorrhoea and periodic paralysis.

A 32 year old male thyrotoxic presenting with gynaecomastia, galactorrhoea and later complicated with hypokalaemic periodic paralysis is presented. The gynaecomastia and galactorrhoea resolved with treatment. To the best of the author's knowledge this combination of association in one patient has not been reported previously.

Psychosis in a patient with hyperkalemic periodic paralysis.

Presentation of an unusual case of a hyperkalemic periodic paralysis patient who developed a psychotic illness during the course of treatment is made in a conference format. The differential diagnosis of this psychotic episode together with some information regarding hyperkalemic periodic paralysis are discussed. The case illustrates the benefits of close cooperation between medical and psychiatric teams in the management of the psychotic patient with medical illness.

Progressive myopathy in hyperkalemic periodic paralysis.

A progressive degenerative myopathy has been well described in hypokalemic periodic paralysis but is not as widely recognized in hyperkalemic periodic paralysis. We studied four families with the latter disease in which some members developed a progressive myopathy. Episodes of paralysis were prolonged, lasting for months in some cases, and in one case paralysis was sufficiently severe to require ventilatory support. The progressive myopathy tended to develop at a time when attacks of paralysis were decreasing in frequency. Muscle biopsy specimens showed variability in fiber size, internal nuc

Severe hypokalemia in thyrotoxic periodic paralysis.

Thyrotoxic hypokalemic periodic paralysis is an uncommon but sometimes fatal disease in which early recognition and therapy may prevent untoward complications. The case of a 26-year-old Chinese man who presented to the emergency department with rapidly progressive profound weakness and severe hypokalemia (serum potassium, 1.2 mEq/L) is presented. The patient required endotracheal intubation, ventilatory assistance, and intravenous potassium administration. Emergency medical evaluation and management of this entity are discussed.

[Pharmacokinetic studies on cefsulodin in perinatal period].

Pharmacokinetic studies on cefsulodin (CFS) were carried out in perinatal mothers and infants. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1. CFS was promptly absorbed upon intravenous drip infusion in pregnant women, producing dose-related peak serum levels. Placental transference to the fetus occurred quickly and at high levels. Upon intravenous drip infusion of 1-2 g of CFS, drug concentration of the cord blood and amniotic fluid exceeded MICs of clinically isolated strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These levels in cord blood ranged 3.3-16.9 micrograms/ml upon 1 g intravenous drip infu

Entrainment of duodenal activity to periodic feeding.

The electrical activity of the antrum and proximal duodenum was recorded simultaneously with bar pressing for food in various feeding conditions. During restricted feeding (RF; food available from 1200 to 1600 hr; lights-on from 0800 to 2000 h), large-amplitude slow potentials of duodenal origin were observed 3-5 hr preceding food access. These potentials occurred in short trains at irregular intervals of approximately 1 min and appeared to be associated with the active phase of the migrating motility complex. At least 8-10 days on RF were required before these irregular contractions (ICs) rel

Hypokalemic periodic paralysis of thyrotoxic origin.

A 50-year-old Vietnamese man suffered recurrent episodes of hypokalemic periodic paralysis during treatment for thyrotoxicosis. Suspected precipitants of the paralysis were oral prednisolone, strenuous exertion and poor compliance with medications. Propranolol prevented the periodic paralysis. Control of the thyrotoxicosis was complicated by a florid skin reaction attributed to carbimazole, and was ultimately achieved using radioiodine.

Periodic alternating nystagmus associated with albinism.

We examined a 73-year-old woman with the rare association of albinism and (presumably) congenital periodic alternating nystagmus. The mechanism of the nystagmus in this case is uncertain. Anomalous retinogeniculate pathways have been documented in albino animals. Periodic alternating nystagmus might occur in some patients with albinism if there are also anomalies in the pathways conveying visual information to the cerebellum and brainstem.
