MMP-9 Expression in bone cells in the developing femur.

The proteolytic functions of the matrix-degrading enzymes, such as ADAMTS (A disintegrin and metalloproteinases) and MMP (Matrix metalloproteinase), play a crucial role in development. This study investigated the proteolytic activity of different types of bone cells, focusing on the expression of MMP-9, throughout the development of the femur in rabbit embryos. The femur formed the physeal growth cartilage, which facilitated the process of endochondral bone development. Osteoblasts are situated on the outer layer of bone spicules and within the periosteum. Osteoclasts are found within the lacu…

The Free Distal Clavicle Osteochondral Flap: Cadaveric Dissection and Case Report to Introduce a Novel Technique.

Vascularized osteochondral flap reconstruction is an innovation with several potential benefits, but there are limited described autologous … ized free osteochondral transfer of the distal clavicle. The distal clavicle was harvested with its periosteum and a small muscle cuff based on the acromial branch of the thoracoacromial system. The authors report a novel technique for distal clavicle osteochondral flap harvest and present a case in which the technique was used successfully in complex elbow …

Airway obstruction resulting from massive subgaleal hematoma caused by superficial temporal artery injuries in an adult patient with liver cirrhosis.

Subgaleal hematoma, characterised by blood accumulation between the galea aponeurosis and the periosteum, is rarely reported in adults. A man with liver cirrhosis experienced airway obstruction secondary to an extensive subgaleal hematoma due to superficial temporal artery injuries. Within 6 hours after injury, swelling of the patient's head and neck was noted, which was associating with inspiratory wheezing and paradoxical breathing, thus necessitating emergency intubation. The branches of the superficial temporal artery were identified as the bleeding source via angiography. Subsequently, en…

Minimal Invasive Corrective Osteotomy with the Ilizarov Mini-Fixator for Malunited Fractures of Proximal Phalanges in Adolescence: Report of Three Cases and a Review of the Literature.

Posttraumatic malunion with combination of angular, rotational, and shortening deformity of the proximal phalanx may cause scissoring of a finger and impairment of hand function. Cosmetic disfigurement and severe dysfunction of fingers require surgical correction, most often via open corrective osteotomies and rigid fixation with a plate or screws. However, such an approach requires a longer incision, inevitably results in a scar, and has a higher potential for extensor tendon adhesion. Also, abruption of the periosteum and plating of the phalange requires longer bone healing time. Thus, we de…

Advances in clinical examination of lacrimal gland.

In humans, the lacrimal gland is located in the socket of the frontal bone above the outer orbital area. As an essential part of the eye surface, the gland is fixed to the orbital periosteum by connective tissue. The lacrimal gland passes through the outer tendon membrane, which divides the gland into larger orbital and minor eyelid glands. The lacrimal glands are the main contributors to tear film. They secrete electrolytes, proteins, and water to help nourish and protect the eye's surface. Furthermore, clinically, lacrimal glands are associated with a variety of inflammatory reactions and im…

Tips and tricks for maximising access to the middle cranial fossa using the superior lateral orbital portal.

BACKGROUND: Transorbital endoscopic approaches are becoming increasingly popular for skull base pathologies; the superior lateral orbital portal is one such approach to the middle cranial fossa. This paper provides a technical description that maximises the surgical portal and minimises morbidity. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION: A superior lid crease incision is made extending laterally and the orbital rim is exposed. A subperiosteal dissection of the lateral and superior orbit is performed, with elevation of periosteum off Whitnall's tubercle, ligation of the recurrent branch of the middle meningeal …

Degloving injury of the mandible among different age groups.

Degloving injuries of the oral cavity are characterised by separation of periosteum and soft tissue of the anterior floor of the mouth from the inner cortex of the anterior segment. The higher incidence of the degloving injuries of mandible are seen in children and young adults due to higher involvement in contact sports. In elders, degloving injury of mandible are rare as compared to that of the limbs which are common. Here, we describe the case report of an elderly female with an apparent soft tissue abrasion with encrustation along the left side of the lower lip due to fall. Thorough intra …

Posttraumatic malunion of the phalanx with rotational deformity may cause crossing of the finger and impair hand function. Cosmetic disfigurement and severe dysfunction of the fingers require surgical correction, most often via open corrective osteotomies and rigid fixation with plates. However, such an approach requires a longer incision, inevitably results in a scar, and has a higher potential for extensor tendon adhesions, which result in extension lags. [Giant cell granuloma in the jaw in a 6-year-old child: A case report].

Giant cell granuloma represents a non-odontogenic tumor. It is located inside the endosteum of the jaws (central) or in the periosteum (peripheral). Although it is a benign disease process, it can also be locally destructive. This condition is a slow-growing, asymptomatic lesion that usually affects children and young adults, predominantly females in its peripheral presentation and males in its central presentation. The mandible, the region of the incisors, canines and premolars are more affected. The etiology of the giant cell granuloma still remains to be defined. It has been reported that t…

Gingival recession: its causes and types, and the importance of orthodontic treatment.

Gingival recession has direct causes and predisposing factors. Orthodontic treatment is able to prevent recession and even contribute to its … orthodontic treatment and gingival recession have been addressed, and so has the importance of the periosteum to the mechanism of gingival recession formation. Clinical as well as experimental trials on the subject would help to clarify this matter, of which understanding is not very deep in the related literature.

Biological methods to enhance bone healing and fracture repair.

This article looks into normal physiological fracture healing with special emphasis on the diamond concept. A precise definition of nonunion of long bones is described. Most often inadequate fixation (too rigid or too loose) is the reason for nonunion in long bone fractures. Because a critical bone defect cannot be bridged, it may lead directly or indirectly (lack of fixation) to nonunion. Individual inadequate local biological characteristics are also often found to be the cause; poor soft tissue coverage as well as a lack of periosteum and muscle or fascia or skin defects can lead to comprom…

Macrodystrophia lipomatosa of foot involving great toe.

Macrodystrophia lipomatosa is a rare form of congenital disorder in which there is localized gigantism characterized by progressive overgrowth of all mesenchymal elements with a disproportionate increase in the fibroadipose tissues. The adipose tissue infiltration involves subcutaneous tissue, periosteum, nerves and bone marrow. Most of the cases reported have hand or foot involvement. Patient seeks medical help for improving cosmesis or to get the size of the involved part reduced in order to reduce mechanical problems. We report a case of macrodystrophia lipomatosa involving medial side of f…

Physeal fractures of the distal tibia and fibula (Salter-Harris Type I, II, III, and IV fractures).

Physeal fractures of the distal tibia and fibula are common and can be seen at any age, although most are seen in the adolescent. An underst … uld be avoided. Gapping of the physis >3 mm after reduction should raise the suspicion of entrapped periosteum that will increase the risk of premature physeal closure. Open reduction of displaced Salter-Harris type III and IV fractures is critical to maintain joint congruity and minimize the risk of physeal arrest.

Tuberculous dacryoadenitis in a child.

BACKGROUND: Orbital tuberculosis is rare even in endemic areas. The disease may involve soft tissue, lacrimal gland, or the periosteum or bones of the orbital wall. CASE: We present an Indian girl, who presented with a slowly growing left-sided superotemporal orbital mass, with no significant previous medical history. The swelling turned to an abscess and burst spontaneously giving rise to a discharging sinus. The discharge was negative for any organism on Gram and Giemsa staining. A tuberculin skin test was strongly positive. Incisional biopsy showed caseating granuloma and Langhan 's giant …

Secondary alveolar bone grafting: our experience with olecranon bone graft.

Management of alveolar cleft has dramatically changed during the last century: secondary alveolar bone grafting is now an integral part of c … eolar cleft. The graft is taken as a single piece to fit the alveolar cleft defect, and it includes periosteum and corticocancellous bone to improve early vascularization and greater volume maintenance.
