Head-to-head comparison of the alternative model for personality disorders and Section II personality disorder model in terms of predicting patient outcomes 1 year later.

The present study investigated the predictive validity of Criterion A and B of the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) compared to the DSM-5 Section II personality disorder (PD) model in predicting patient outcomes 1 year after initial assessment, in a hetero-method longitudinal design. A clinical sample of 84 participants were administered both traditional Section II and AMPD interviews by two independent interviewers. One year after assessment, disability (World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0) and symptom severity (Brief Symptom Inventory) were assessed

A plea for the diagnosis of hypochondriacal personality disorder.

Hypochondriacal personality disorder is identified as a separate condition by cluster analysis of data from a structured interview for assessing personality disorders, the Personality Assessment Schedule. Close examination of the patients identified as having hypochondriacal personality disorder suggests that they have common characteristics, including excessive preoccupation with the maintenance of health, distorted perception of minor symptoms so that they are elevated to the status of major disease, and frequent medical consultations and disciplines fringing on medicine. In a study of 1000 …

The Construct Validity of the ICD-11 Severity of Personality Dysfunction Under Scrutiny of Object-Relations Theory.

The current classification of personality disorder in ICD-11 includes a description of personality functioning, derived from a number of theoretical paradigms, but most notably consistent with the psychodynamic approach. Concurrently, an object-relations model of personality functioning in a dimensional assessment of severity is provided in the Structured Interview of Personality Organization-Revised (STIPO-R). To date, there are no published measures of International Classification of Diseases-11 (ICD-11) personality severity, though the construct is very comparable to the concepts assessed i

Understanding the Relationship Between Complicated Grief Symptoms and Patterns of Personality Disorders in a Substance Users' Sample: A Network Analysis Approach.

BACKGROUND: The presence of personality disorders is greatly prevalent among substance users. Personality disorders could increase vulnerability to complicated grief symptoms. Bereavement is commonly overlooked among substance users. We used network analysis to estimate the structure of relations between patterns of personality disorders and complicated grief symptoms among a bereaved substance-using population. METHODS: Complicated grief and personality disorders were assessed in a sample of 196 bereaved substance users. We use the graphical least absolute shrinkage selection operator (LASSO

Do trajectories of self- and interpersonal functioning identify a core underlying developmental pathway for personality pathology in late adolescence and early adulthood?

The Alternative Model for Personality Disorders is a dimensional model of personality disorder that describes difficulties in self- and interpersonal functioning as the common core of personality disorder and its hypothesized developmental pathway. However, empirical evidence in support of this developmental pathway is lacking, and the unique developmental relevance of self- and interpersonal functioning for the emergence of personality pathology independent from internalizing and externalizing psychopathology remains unknown. The aim of this preregistered study (which can be found in the addi

The personality pattern of patients with chronic peptic ulcer. A case-control study.

The personality assessment of 96 patients with gastric ulcer (GU) and 70 patients with duodenal ulcer (DU) was carried out using the Cattell Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16 PF). Two control groups were used; one group comprised community controls and the other patient controls--that is, patients with cholelithiasis. Three of the four personality characteristics that distinguished female GU and/or DU patients from controls--emotional instability, tension, and anxiety--and the two characteristics that distinguished male GU patients--low enthusiasm and low self-control--are component…

The influence of personality disorder in predicting suicidal behaviour in common mental disorders: A 30-year study.

Two hundred ten patients with anxiety and depressive disorders were followed up over 30 years. Personality status was assessed at baseline using the Personality Assessment Schedule (PAS), an instrument that classifies personality disorder in a similar way to the new ICD-11 classification. Assessments of suicidal behaviour were made at 5, 12 and 30 years and suicidal thoughts at 12 and 30 years and analysed by personality status, clinical diagnosis and scores on the General Neurotic Syndrome Scale, a combined diagnosis of mixed anxiety depression and personality dysfunction. Suicide attempts we…

Personality dysfunction according to the DSM-5 Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD) predicts suicide attempts in clinical high-risk adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Both personality traits and personality disorders have been linked to suicide risk in youth. The DSM-5 Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD) allows dimensional assessment of personality pathology, which may enhance prediction of suicide attempts. A recent study found that personality dysfunction (Criterion A of the AMPD) is associated with past suicide attempts in adolescents. Building on this, the present study aimed to investigate the longitudinal relationship between AMPD personality pathology and suicide attempts in adolescents. METHODS: Data were drawn from a cons

[Personality disorders and "psychopathy" in sex offenders imprisoned in forensic-psychiatric hospitals--SKID-II- and PCL-R-results in patients with impulse control disorder and paraphilia].

In order to clarify differential-diagnostic questions 47 mentally ill sex offenders (with impulse control disorder and paraphilia) were assessed with regard to comorbidity of personality disorders and "psychopathy". For this examination the SKID-II for personality disorders and the Psychopathy Checklist (PCL-R) were used. 72 % of the sex offenders showed at least one personality disorder. The highest prevalence was found for cluster-B disorders, first of all the antisocial personality disorder. Using a PCL-R cut off score of 25 (for Europe) 10 of the 47 subjects (21 %) were diagnosed as "psych

A Tri-Directional Examination of Parental Personality, Parenting Behaviors, and Contextual Factors in Influencing Adolescent Behavioral Outcomes.

Links between parental personality, parenting, and adolescent behavior have been well established. However, extant research is limited by the sole focus on parental Big Five personality, and not taking home and family context into account. These gaps were addressed in two studies. In study 1, context, parental personality, and their interactions were examined as predictors of parenting in separate mother and father models (parents only). In study 2, context, parental personality, and parenting were examined as predictors of adolescent behavioral outcomes (parent-adolescent dyads). Parents (N =

The role of maladaptive personality in behavioural and psychological symptoms in dementia.

BACKGROUND: Although research demonstrated a significant link between premorbid normative personality traits and the severity of behavioural … nship with the BPSD severity and associated emotional distress. We therefore encourage to implement personality assessment within BPSD treatment strategies. This way care becomes more person-focused and more tailored to the specific needs of patients and caregivers.

Personality Disorder in Adult Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: Attrition and Change During Long-term Treatment.

Personality disorders (PDs) are commonly found in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and are associated with increased ADHD symptoms and psychosocial impairment. To assess the impact of PDs or personality traits on retention rates in ADHD trials and whether treating ADHD affects the expression of PD, data were analyzed from 2 methylphenidate trials. Assessment of PDs and personality traits included using the Wisconsin Personality Disorders Inventory IV and the Structured Clinical Interview for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition Person

Analysis of the interaction between personality dysfunction and traits in the statistical prediction of physical aggression: Results from outpatient and community samples.

The Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD), included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.) and the World Health Organization's International Classification of Diseases (11th ed.; ICD-11) are, respectively, hybrid categorical-dimensional and dimensional frameworks for personality disorders (PDs). Both models emphasize personality dysfunction and personality traits. Previous studies investigating the links between the AMPD and ICD-11, and self-reported physical aggression have mostly focused on traits and did not take into account the potential intera

Influence of dependent personality status on the outcome and health service costs of health anxiety.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of dependent personality disturbance as an influence on the cost and clinical outcome of health anxiety. METHOD: In the course of a randomized trial of treatments for patients with high health anxiety over 12 months, we also recorded dependent personality status by two methods: the Personality Assessment Schedule (an observer-rated instrument) and the self-rated Dependent Personality Questionnaire (DPQ), the latter being administered at baseline, six months and 12 months. The two main hypotheses tested were that patients with dependent personality features woul…

The Boredom Prone Personality: A Multitrait-Multimethod Approach.

The present investigation reports the convergent and discriminant validity coefficients for two versions of Farmer and Sundberg's (Journal of Personality Assessment, 50(1), 4-17, 1986) boredom proneness scale. Boredom proneness, a trait that refers to an enduring tendency to disengage from the environment, has been neglected by the field of psychology despite its theoretical relevance to performance and psychological well-being. This report sought: (a) to validate a shortened 8-item version of the original Boredom Proneness Scale published by Struk et al. (Assessment, 24(3), 346-359, 2017) and…

OBJECTIVES: The introduction of a new dimensional approach for the diagnosis of personality disorders in ICD-11 entails the need for valid instruments to operationalize the new model. The present study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the existing research on the available instruments for the new model. METHODS: A systematic literature search was carried out with PubMed. Only empirical data on the ICD-11 personality model in adults were considered. RESULTS: Of 93 publications, 79 studies applied at least one relevant diagnostic instrument. The majority showed satisfactory reliabil

Psychometric evaluation of the Norwegian Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) in a multisite clinical sample of patients with personality disorders and personality problems.

OBJECTIVE: Psychometric properties of 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) have been widely analyzed, but the validity and psychometric qualities of the TAS-20 in populations with personality disorders are still poorly understood. The aim of the current study was to analyze the factor structure and validity of TAS-20. METHOD: Data were extracted from a multisite clinical sample of patients with personality disorders or personality-related problems referred to specialist mental health services in Norway. RESULTS: With one exception, TAS-20 revealed acceptable psychometric properties. Va
