Empathy in psychiatric patients.

The definition of empathy is controversial. Here one aspect of it, namely perception of others' feelings and personality, was investigated. Empathy was assessed by comparing self-rating with rating by other persons. Group psychotherapy patients were used. Nineteen patients with a history of schizophrenic psychosis and 20 neurotics were found to have lower empathy than 20 patients with borderline personality disorders whose empathy was as high as the descriptively used scores of four psychotherapists. Empathy was not found to be dependent on similarity of personalities. It correlated negatively

The paper is concerned with the results of a study of the personality, of the intellectual development and psychosocial status in 137 patients aged 5 to 50 years suffering from hemophilia. As compared to the control group, insufficient social and labour adaptation of adult patients was established in spite of the positive characteristics of the personality and higher mentality in the patients at preschool and school ages. It is concluded that the problem requires further study with the use of the data obtained in psychosocial rehabilitation of this patients' group.

Low level of dark personality traits in transgender people and their relationships with resilience.

INTRODUCTION: In addition to anxiety disorders and depressive symptoms, transgender people are also shown to have pathological personality profiles. These patterns are due to functioning under chronic stress, exposure to discrimination, victimization, the inability to affirm gender identity, and insufficient social support. The internalized transphobia predisposes transgender individuals to psychological decompensation. The study aims to assess Dark Personality Trait among transgender individuals and to establish the relationships between Dark Tetrad traits and resilience. MATERIALS AND METHO

The clinical course of trauma-related disorders and personality disorders: study protocol of two-year follow-up based on structured interviews.

BACKGROUND: Trauma-related disorders and personality disorders are prevalent in survivors of chronic childhood trauma and neglect. Both conditions have serious consequences for patients, their families, society and public health and a high risk of development of chronicity. However, information on the long term course trajectories is lacking and predictors of course outcome in survivors of chronic childhood traumatization are unknown. The first aim of the current study is to identify two-year course trajectories of pathology in patients with trauma-related disorders and personality disorders.

The association between adverse childhood events and cluster C personality disorders: A meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Studies suggest that adverse childhood events (ACEs) may contribute to the onset and development of cluster C personality disorders. However, the association between ACEs and these disorders remains unclear in terms of consistency across studies and effect magnitude, as well as generalizability within cluster C. The current meta-analysis aimed to examine the associations between ACEs and cluster C personality disorders based on the available literature. METHODS: Systematic searches were conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and PsychInfo. Forty-eight eligible studies were

The plight of personality disorders in the DSM-5.

This article provides a brief history of the development of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders published by the American Psychiatric Association, and how it relates to the proposed fifth edition to be published in 2013. Of particular emphasis is Axis II and how this axis is likely to be restructured. The reconceptualization of the nosology for personality disorders has been controversial since the publication of the DSM-III-R (Wilson, 1993). In both the clinical and academic communities, ongoing debate about diagnostic classification of personality disorders has been com

Community Support for Persons with Disabilities in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A Scoping Review.

Over the life course, persons with disabilities require a range of supports to be integrated into their communities, to participate in activities that are meaningful and necessary, and to have access, on an equal basis to persons without disabilities, to community living. We conducted a scoping review of the peer-reviewed and grey literature on community support for persons with disabilities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The main findings of this review concern the following: there are gaps in access to community support for persons with disabilities in LMICs; there are barriers

The inclusion of disability and aging in COVID-19 hygiene behavior change interventions across low-and middle-income countries: A review using the COVID-19 Inclusive WASH Checklist.

INTRODUCTION: People with disabilities and older adults face a high risk of dying from COVID-19. Handwashing with soap and sanitizing surfaces were recommended to disrupt COVID-19 transmission. Yet, in many low-and middle-income countries (LMICs), these populations have inadequate access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and are not reached by public health campaigns. The Hygiene Behavior Change Coalition (HBCC) was set up to limit the spread of COVID-19 in LMICs. Twenty organizations working across 37 countries were funded to encourage populations to adopt recommended personal hygiene b

Naturalistic Use of Aspect Morphology in Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Children.

Grammatical morphology often links small acoustic forms to abstract semantic domains. Deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children have reduced access to the acoustic signal and frequently have delayed acquisition of grammatical morphology (e.g., Tomblin, Harrison, Ambrose, Walker, Oleson & Moeller, 2015). This study investigated the naturalistic use of aspectual morphology in DHH children to determine if they organize this semantic domain as normal hearing (NH) children have been found to do. Thirty DHH children (M = 6;8) and 29 NH children (M = 5;11) acquiring English participated in a free-play

Clinical features of soft bipolarity in major depressive inpatients.

Because of the difficulties of ascertaining episode of hypomania by past history of the patients, it is of clinical value to find variables which predict the development of bipolar II disorder in depressive patients. Taking advantage of relatively long hospitalization, the authors tried to elucidate fine clinical features of the soft bipolarity. The subjects were 39 patients with Major Depressive Episode, diagnosed according to the 4th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual criteria. Among them, 15 patients were diagnosed as bipolar II disorder (BPII), whereas 24 patients were with u

The Association Between Personality Traits and Irritable Bowel Syndrome-Insights From an Exploratory Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests psychological factors including personality traits can have impact on the development and course of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and associated health-related quality of life (HrQoL), with large individual heterogeneity. Main aim of this study was to examine between-persons associations and within-sample concurrent associations of the personality traits neuroticism, extraversion, conscientiousness, openness and agreeableness with gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, psychological factors and HrQoL in IBS-patients. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from an observational

Combined group and individual therapy for patients with avoidant personality disorder-A pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Avoidant personality disorder (AvPD) is a common disorder within mental health services, associated with significant psychosocial impairment. The disorder has been neglected in research. There are currently no evidence-based treatments for AvPD, and there is a need for treatment studies focusing particularly on this form of personality pathology. The present study was a pilot study of combined group and individual therapy for patients with AvPD, based on mentalization-based and metacognitive interpersonal therapy. The aim was to investigate the feasibility of the treatment program a

The Influence of Personality Type D on Cardiovascular Prognosis in Patients After Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting: Data from a 5-Year-Follow-up Study.

BACKGROUND: Type D personality is accompanied by a set of negative behavioral patterns: low physical activity, high levels of psychological distress, low adherence to treatment. However, studies regarding predictive value of the type D personality remain inconclusive: the results varied depending on the examined cohort, age, and ethnicity. The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of type D personality on the 5-year prognosis in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in Russian population. METHODS: The study included 602 patients with stable coronary artery diseas

The MCP-1, CCL-5 and SDF-1 chemokines as pro-inflammatory markers in generalized anxiety disorder and personality disorders.

INTRODUCTION: The co-occurrence of generalized anxiety disorder and personality disorders suggests the existence of association between the neurobiological predispositions leading to the development of these disorders and activation of cytokine system. Pro-inflammatory chemokines such as CCL-5/RANTES (regulated upon activation normal T cell expressed and secreted) and CXCL12/SDF-1 (stromal derived factor) play an important role in immune response. METHODS: A total of 160 participants were enrolled in the study, 120 of whom comprised the study group (people with the dual diagnosis of personali

The adaptive significance of destructiveness in primitive personalities.

Destructiveness in primitive personalities is not restricted to a segment of the person as it is in the case of neurotics, but is global and pervasive. This destructiveness is meaningfully configured in a manner which cannot fully be accounted for by constitutional factors or be comprehended from the individual, intrapsychic, conflictual viewpoint of classical psychoanalysis. It follows an interpersonally meaningful pattern and therefore has adaptive significance in the contemporary life of the individual. The adaptive model I propose does not violate essential canons of psychoanalytic theory,

Personality hardiness: an essential attribute for the ICU nurse?

Staff turnover has been a persistent problem in critical care units, magnified by stress and burn-out in nurses. Researchers studying the concept of personality hardiness over the past 20 years have suggested that it may play a protective role against stress and burn-out. Those who are able to effectively cope with stress and adapt to the uncertain environment of the ICU are less likely to leave it prematurely. The concept of personality hardiness is explored as it relates to adaptation of nurses to the ICU. Suggestions for development of hardiness are based on a review of relevant literature.
