We examined correlations of child sexual abuse among 300 adolescent girls in psychiatric inpatient treatment. Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.)-based psychiatric diagnoses were obtained from the Schedule for Affective Disorder and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children-Present and Lifetime and from data on family and behavioral characteristics from the European Addiction Severity Index (EuropASI). A total of 79 girls (26.3%) had experienced child sexual abuse during their lifetime. Child sexual abuse was associated with an adolescent's home environment, sibling sta

In the central nervous system omega-3 fatty acids modulate cell signaling and affect dopaminergic and serotonergic pathways. On this basis, a new application for omega-3 fatty acids has been proposed, concerning the treatment of several psychiatric disorders. The present article is an update of a previous systematic review and is aimed to provide a complete report of data published in the period between 1980 and 2019 on efficacy and tolerability of omega-3 fatty acids in psychiatric disorders. In July 2019, an electronic search on PUBMED, Medline and PsychINFO of all RCTs, systematic reviews a

Gambling disorder is an addiction that can cause major suffering, and some populations seem to be more vulnerable than others. Offender populations have a remarkably high prevalence of gambling problems and they are also over-represented in a number of diagnoses related to gambling disorder, like substance use disorders and antisocial personality disorder. Yet, there are few studies investigating gambling disorder prevalence and related psychiatric comorbidity in this group. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of, and association between, gambling disorder and other psychiatric diagn

BACKGROUND: People with a mental illness experience a higher burden of smoking-related disease. Smoke-free policies in mental health facilities provide an opportunity to reduce smoking-related harms for patients and staff alike. Limited evidence regarding the effect of such policies on preventing smoking in mental health facilities has been reported. The aims of this study are to describe the extent of smoking and the provision of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) to patients in a mental health facility with a smoke-free policy.
METHODS: Cross-sectional studies of smoking (cigarette butt cou

Previous research suggests associations between suicidality (i.e., suicidal ideation and attempt) and chronic emptiness in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, approximately one-third of clinical patients without BPD endorse feelings of emptiness. The current study examined the relationship between chronic emptiness and suicidal behavior in 3,284 psychiatric outpatients. Patients were evaluated with the Structured Interview for DSM-IV Personality (SIDP-IV), the Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM-IV (SCID-IV), and the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizoph

Patients with a history of previous parasuicide were compared to those who had made their first attempt. A scale for suicidal ideation derived from the Scaled Version of the General Health Questionnaire was completed by patients. ICD-10 personality disorder diagnoses were derived from the Standardized Assessment of Personality which was administered to knowledgeable informants. Logistic regression showed that unemployment, increasing severity of suicidal ideation, previous psychiatric treatment and borderline personality disorder increased the risk of reports of previous parasuicide. The fifth edition of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association, 2013) includes within a section for emerging measures and models an alternative model of personality disorder (AMPD). This article provides a brief overview of its development, noting, in particular, issues and controversies. The article concludes with a discussion of and recommendations for further research in regard to 8 issues: (a) whether the DSM-5 AMPD offers any incremental validity over DSM-IV with respect to the validity or clinical

INTRODUCTION: Suicide is a multifaceted event precipitated by underlying biopsychosocial risk factors. Evidence for various psychiatric morbidities underlying suicidality through Psychological Autopsy (PA) is established in case-control studies. However, considering the possible geographical variations and the limited number of studies from developing countries, the estimates of such risk factors across the world could provide great insight into their comparative prevalence and assist in targeting the prevention of suicide.
METHODS: A systematic review of the literature from 1991 to 2020 in t

It has long been established that some psychiatric disorders run in families, and as a result, the family history method has become an established part of clinical and research psychiatry. Although there is much literature on the Axis I disorders, there is relatively little on the personality disorders. There are now reports that dependent personality can run in families. This report demonstrates that a standardized family history method for the DSM-III personality disorder clusters can distinguish relatives of dependent personality disorder patients from relatives of normal controls on the an

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric disorders are common among individuals treated for deliberate self-harm (DSH) in general hospitals. However, few large-scale studies have explicitly addressed psychiatric disorders among adult DSH patients.
AIM: To examine the presence of psychiatric disorders among adults presenting to general hospitals following DSH, and further to establish clinical and sociodemographic determinants of being diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder in this patient population.
METHOD: Data from several national registers were interlinked to identify all individuals aged 18 and older pr

INTRODUCTION: It is unclear if there is a causal link between psychiatric disorders and unexplained chronic gastrointestinal (GI) symptomatology. The role of personality is also in dispute. We aimed to assess the association of these factors with functional GI symptoms in a birth cohort study.
METHODS: The Dunedin birth cohort is well characterised and has been followed-up prospectively to age 26 (n=980). Measured were upper and lower GI symptoms over the prior year at age 26 using a validated questionnaire, psychiatric diagnoses at ages 18 and 21 by standardised interview applying DSM-III-R

Involuntary psychiatric admission is a common feature of mental health services around the world, but there is limited research about tools to support clinical assessment of objective necessity for compulsory care. Our study aimed to determine the relationships between objective necessity for involuntary treatment as measured by the Compulsory Treatment Checklist (CTC), legal admission status (voluntary or involuntary) and various clinical parameters (e.g. symptoms, insight) in an Irish inpatient psychiatry setting. The CTC is relatively new tool, developed and described by Brissos et al. (201

The management of mentally disordered offenders varies widely across countries. Given the high prevalence of individuals with mental disorders throughout the criminal justice system, it is not always clear why some people receive forensic treatment and others a prison sentence. This project investigated trends in criminal justice sentencing practices in Germany from 1995 to 2009. We analysed officially recorded data taken from 14,100,329 court rulings to describe differences in the index offences committed by individuals sentenced to prison of at least two years and those given a forensic trea

INTRODUCTION: Violence committed by individuals with severe mental illness has become an increasing focus of concern among clinicians, policy makers, and the general public, often as the result of tragic events. Research has shown in the past two decades an increased risk of violence among patients with mental disorder. Nevertheless, of those suffering from mental illness, perpetrators of other directed violence form a minority subgroup. The means by which there is this association between mental illness and violence has remained controversial. Factors such as positive psychotic symptoms, medi

Though the carrying out of involuntary psychiatric care (IPC) mainly follows from a subjective appraisal of the patient's state, some specific clinical criteria have been proposed on regards to the underlying disorder. French national recommendations are synthesized hereby, and completed by a literature review. In psychotic disorders, the level of insight and the impact of delusion(s) are the essential criteria that should recommend to carry out IPC. In mood disorders, the appraisal is different depending on the underlying clinical state. In depressive or mixed states, IPC should be considered

We describe the case of a 36-year-old man presenting with cognitive impairment and personality change. General paresis of the insane, the chronic cerebral parenchymatous form of neurosyphilis, was diagnosed. MRI showed the typical severe frontotemporal atrophy. Despite antibiotic treatment his mental state further declined. General paresis is rare and diagnosis is difficult because of the non-specific neuropsychiatric symptoms. Early diagnosis and treatment are important.

Biomarkers that can differentiate between psychiatric disorders with and without suicidal behavior history from each other and from healthy volunteers may explain part of the pathogenesis of suicidal behavior. We conducted the hitherto largest meta-analysis comparing immune biomarkers between subjects with and without suicide attempt history or death by suicide. The study protocol was registered with PROSPERO, CRD42020212841. Standardized mean differences (SMD) were pooled with random-effects models. Heterogeneity between studies was assessed with the I2-statistic and publication bias was eval

Although approximately 20% of adults in the United States experience a mental health condition annually, there continues to be a gap in the provision of care because of a shortage of behavioral health providers. The National Council for Behavioral Health Medical Director Institute has recommended that the number of board-certified psychiatric pharmacists (BCPPs), who are clinical pharmacists with advanced specialized training and experience in the treatment of patients with psychiatric and substance use disorders, be expanded to help meet this need. Although BCPPs currently assist in expanding
