Treatment interventions for emetophobia: An extensive scoping review.

A specific phobia of vomiting (SPOV), clinically known as emetophobia, is characterised by the severe fear of vomit and vomit-related stimuli. Whilst literature remains unequivocal on the detrimental effects of emetophobia, treatment recommendations and outcomes for emetophobia vary. This scoping review synthesises and maps research on treatment interventions for emetophobia, identifies current trends and potential gaps in emetophobia research, and their outcomes. The purpose is providing a comprehensive summary of treatment interventions to guide researchers in the development of evidence-bas

Trypophobia, skin disease, and the visual discomfort of natural textures.

In the last decade, the behavioral sciences have described the phenomenon of trypophobia, which is the discomfort felt by some individuals when viewing images containing clusters of bumps or holes. One evolutionary hypothesis for this phenomenon is that this visual discomfort represents an adaptation which helps organisms avoid skin disease and/or ectoparasites. Even though trypophobic imagery and disease imagery are both examples of visual textures, to date there has been no comparison of the visual discomfort elicited by these two specific kinds of textures within the larger context of the v

The role of self-efficacy in specific fears.

Low self-efficacy for threatening stimuli and situations has been proposed as an important etiological factor in the development and maintenance of specific phobias. The present study examined the relationships between general self-efficacy (GSE), specific self-efficacy (SSE) and specific fears in a representative sample (n = 717). While GSE was associated with higher self-reported fear and avoidance, SSE (e.g. SSE in the presence of animal-related fear) was more related to specific fears. SSE turned out to be a significant predictor of specific fear even after controlling for trait anxiety, a

Older and fearing new technologies? The relationship between older adults' technophobia and subjective age.

OBJECTIVE: This article aimed to identify different technophobia subgroups of older adults and examine the associations between these distinct subgroups and the subjective age. METHODS: A sample of 728 retired older adults over the age of 55 was recruited in China. Latent profile analysis was conducted to identify technophobia subgroups using three indicators: techno-anxiety, techno-paranoia and privacy concerns. Analysis of Variance was applied to determine whether a relationship exists between the identified technophobic subgroups and subjective ages (Feel-age, Look-age, Do-age and Interest

Age regression in the treatment of needle phobia: a case report.

Trypanophobia (needle phobia) frequently occurs because of negative encounters with medical procedures and/or needles. Trypanophobia ranges in severity from causing mild anxiety, including apprehension about medical procedures, to severe anxiety and complete avoidance of medical care. In this case report, we describe a 29-year-old who underwent hypnosis-facilitated age regression therapy to improve his trypanophobia. Through the guidance of his subconscious, he realized his reaction to needles may not have been directly related to a difficult medical procedure he had undergone at the age of tw

Emotions in motion: affective valence can influence compatibility effects with graspable objects.

Previous studies showed that affective valence (positive, negative) influences Stimulus-Response Compatibility (SRC) effects elicited by both relevant and irrelevant spatial dimensions. We tested whether valence influences SRC effects when the irrelevant spatial dimension rather than being conveyed by the entire stimulus location is conveyed by the location of the stimulus' graspable part, i.e., the Handle-Response (H-R) compatibility effect. Participants saw objects with either a flower, a spider or nothing on their handle and categorized them as kitchen utensils or garage tools through butto

Distortions and disjunctions of temporalities in times of pandemic.

Since the Covid pandemic required the implementation of restrictions, my patients have been concerned with their experience of time, which seemed distorted by the state of emergency impacting on our lives, and often elicited the feeling of inhabiting a dystopian world. There appear existential demands for subjective meaning, especially when the fear of death is so intense it appears uncontainable. The state of uncertainty impacts upon the sense of the future, and hence on desire and hope: affect states that emerge primarily from the internal world. Within the framework of Western thought, time

The Self and alien self in psyche and soma.

This paper compares presentations of disorders of the sense of body ownership and agency from psychoanalytic and neurological perspectives to demonstrate similarities in symptomatology proposing these similarities arise from adjustments in Friston's generative model of self-organization and selfhood. The implications for the analytic model of the Self, for clinical practice and for neuroscience research are considered. Patients with narcissistic disorders use projective defences resulting in a disordered sense of what belongs to whom. This applies to mind and body of self and other and is cent

Cockroaches are scarier than snakes and spiders: Validation of an affective standardized set of animal images (ASSAI).

Research on emotional processes has been closely related to the use of emotional stimuli, promoting the development of different standardized sets of images. However, some kinds of images that would be relevant in clinical psychology research are not available, especially for small animal phobias. The aim of the present study is to validate a set of animal images that includes images of cockroaches, which are not present in the current sets of images. Two hundred and forty images depicting five types of animals (cockroaches, spiders, snakes, cats, and butterflies) were collected from online pu

No persistent attenuation of fear memories in humans: A registered replication of the reactivation-extinction effect.

It has been proposed that memory retrieval can destabilize consolidated memories, after which they need to be reconsolidated in order to be retained. The presentation of relevant information during memory reconsolidation could then result in the modification of a destabilized memory trace, by allowing the memory trace to be updated before being reconsolidated. In line with this idea, Schiller et al. (2010) have demonstrated that memory retrieval shortly before extinction training can prevent the later recovery of conditioned fear responding that is observed after regular extinction training. T

Attention allocation in social anxiety during a speech.

Cognitive models assume that social anxiety is associated with and maintained by biased information processing, leading to change in attention allocation, which can be measured by examining eye movement. However, little is known about the distribution of attention among positive, neutral and negative stimuli during a social task and the relative importance of positive versus negative biases in social anxiety. In this study, eye movement, subjective state anxiety and psychophysiology of individuals with high trait social anxiety (HSA) and low trait social anxiety (LSA) were measured during a sp

Attention bias modification for anxiety and phobias: current status and future directions.

Attention bias modification (ABM) was introduced over a decade ago as a computerized method of manipulating attentional bias and has been followed by intense interest in applying ABM for clinical purposes. While meta-analyses support ABM as a method of modifying attentional biases and reducing anxiety symptoms, there have been notable discrepancies in findings published within the last several years. In this review, we comment on recent research that may help explain some of the inconsistencies across ABM studies. More relevant to the future of ABM research, we highlight areas in which continu

[School phobia in adolescents, treatment and return to school].

School refusal is a particular entity which involves the school, treatment and the family. The therapy is complex and necessarily multimodal. Treatment aims towards a rapid return to full-time schooling in the usual environment. It is backed up by a psychological support network of caregivers and a sufficiently containing and restrictive hospitalisation in a specialised unit.

Individual differences in distance perception.

Distance perception is among the most pervasive mental phenomena and the oldest research topics in behavioural science. However, we do not understand well the most pervasive finding of distance perception research, that of large individual differences. There are large individual differences in acrophobia (fear of heights), which we commonly assume consists of an abnormal fear of stimuli perceived normally. Evolved navigation theory (ENT) instead suggests that acrophobia consists of a more normal fear of stimuli perceived abnormally. ENT suggests that distance perception individual differences
