BACKGROUND: To test the function of implantable devices for electrical stimulation of the retina, long-term registration tests of cortical-evoked potentials are required. Skin electrodes are not appropriate to provide representative recordings, due to the voluminous pneumatic frontal sinus of minipigs. Therefore, epidural electrodes were permanently implanted in minipigs and tested with visual and electrical retinal stimulation. The present study describes long-term recordings of electrically evoked cortical potentials in minipigs.
METHODS: Three-channel silver-silver chloride electrodes were

The basal ganglia and cerebellum have traditionally been associated with motor performance. Recently, there has been considerable interest regarding the contributions of these subcortical structures to aspects of cognition. In particular, both the basal ganglia and cerebellum have been hypothesized to be involved in the control of attentional set. To date, no neuropsychological studies have directly compared the effects of basal ganglia and cerebellar dysfunction on the same attention shifting tasks. To this end, we employed an alternating attention task that has been used to demonstrate putat

We applied repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in order to induce interference on visuo-spatial perception in 11 healthy subjects. Subjects performed a visuo-spatial task requiring judgements about the symmetry of prebisected lines. Visual stimuli consisted of symmetrically or asymmetrically transected lines, tachystoscopically presented for 50 ms on a computer-monitor. Performance was examined in basal condition and during rTMS trains of 10 stimuli at 25 Hz, delivered through a focal coil over right or left posterior parietal cortex (P5 and P6 sites) and triggered synchronousl

Electrical recordings from achromatic second order neurons of intact superfused pineal organs of the rainbow trout were used to investigate the role of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the transmission of photoreceptor signals onto centrally projecting ganglion cells. Bath-applied GABA decreased the spike discharge rate of 98% of achromatic ganglion cells in a dose-dependent manner. GABA was also active if applied during synaptic blockade, demonstrating the presence of GABAergic receptors at the ganglion cell level. Responsiveness of ganglion cells to light was reversibly enhanced by GABA. Th

Tonic and phasic inspiratory genioglossus (GG) electromyographic activity (EMG) was recorded from 13 anesthetized rabbits during unstimulated breathing. Integrated GG EMG peaked earlier in inspiration and presented a more rounded contour than integrated diaphragmatic (DIA) EMG. Spontaneous augmented deep inspirations (sighs) showed a biphasic pattern in both GG and DIA EMGs. Hyperventilation abolished phasic inspiratory activity in the GG before the DIA, suggesting that the GG has a higher CO2 apneic point. Hypercapnia increased both EMGs; however, GG EMG increased more, as a percent of base l

Can alerting retro-cues improve the conscious perception of stimuli that would otherwise remain unseen? While pre-stimulus alerting is known to facilitate conscious access, the effects of retro-cues remain ambiguous due to methodological confounds in existing literature. Specifically, most studies finding retro-cue benefits have relied on spatial features (such as lateralized targets or cues), which confound alerting with spatial selection. Our design addresses this gap by employing central visual targets and non-lateralized auditory cues, thereby isolating the temporal boost of phasic alertin

We describe properties and laminar organization of visual and auditory responses sampled with linear electrode arrays in and around the supplementary eye field of four macaque monkeys performing a visually guided task with a tone secondary reinforcer. Of pyramidal neurons in all layers and interneurons in L3 and L5/6, one-quarter were visually responsive, one-quarter, auditory, with 30% bimodal. Visual neurons were less common rostral, lateral, and medial to the supplementary eye field. Facilitated visual and auditory responses were much more common than suppressed. Pyramidal and interneurons

Prior studies in multiple sclerosis (MS) suggest preserved recognition of positive emotions despite deficits for negative ones, but this dissociation may reflect methodological limitations (valence-asymmetry: positive-valence being limited to happiness/joy in basic-emotion sets). This study tested whether emotion-recognition deficits in MS are valence-specific or more generalized using dynamic stimuli and reduced valence-asymmetry, assessed across two sensory modalities. Exploratory analyses also examined cognitive status and correlations with cognitive/affective measures. Fifty relapsing-remi

Prior research has explored the effects of engaging with real or virtual natural landscapes and listening to music during aerobic exercise on short-term affect, however, the specific differences in the improvement of short-term affect by different combinations of Virtual Reality (VR) and music rhythm require further investigation. The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of various combinations of VR and music on short-term mood, thereby providing a reference for future research on public fitness. This study recruited 132 valid participants (mean age 24.0 ± 0.9 years), with a

Emotional experiences deeply impact our bodily states, such as when we feel 'anger', our fists close and our face burns. Recent studies have shown that emotions can be mapped onto specific body areas, suggesting a possible role of the primary somatosensory system (S1) in emotion processing. To date, however, the causal role of S1 in emotion generation remains unclear. To address this question, we applied transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) on the S1 at different frequencies (beta, theta, and sham) while participants saw emotional stimuli with different degrees of pleasantness a

Objective.Current commercial magnetoencephalography (MEG) systems detect neuro-magnetic signals using superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs), which require liquid helium as cryogen and have many limitations during operation. In contrast, optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) technology provides a promising alternative to conventional SQUID-MEG. OPMs can operate at room temperature, offering benefits such as flexible deployment and lower costs. However, the validation of OPM-MEG has primarily been conducted on small sample sizes and specific regions of interest in the brain, lack

Close coupling between attention and smooth pursuit eye movements has been widely established and frontal eye field (FEF) is a "hub" region for attention and eye movements. Frontal pursuit area (FPA), a subregion of the FEF, is part of neural circuit for the pursuit, here, we directly checked the role of the FPA in the interaction between the pursuit and attention. To do it, we applied a dual-task paradigm where an attention demanding task was integrated into the pursuit target and interrupted the FPA using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). In the study, participants were required to pu

In the present study we tested the effects of different transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) protocols in the formation of visuo-spatial contextual learning (VSCL). The study comprised three experiments designed to evaluate tDCS-induced changes in VSCL measures collected during the execution of a visual search task widely used to examine statistical learning in the visuo-spatial domain. In Experiment 1, we probed for the effects of left-posterior parietal cortex (PPC) anodal-tDCS (AtDCS) at different timings (i.e. offline and online) and intensities (i.e. 3 mA and 1.5 mA). The protoc

Microglia have crucial roles in sculpting synapses and maintaining neural circuits during development. To test the hypothesis that microglia continue to regulate neural circuit connectivity in adult brain, we have investigated the effects of chronic microglial depletion, via CSF1R inhibition, on synaptic connectivity in the visual cortex in adult mice of both sexes. We find that the absence of microglia dramatically increases both excitatory and inhibitory synaptic connections to excitatory cortical neurons assessed with functional circuit mapping experiments in acutely prepared adult brain sl

In recent years, transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) has been used to improve cognitive and perceptual abilities and to boost learning. In the visual domain, transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS), a type of tES in which electric current is randomly alternating in between two electrodes at high frequency, has shown potential in inducing long lasting perceptual improvements when coupled with tasks such as contrast detection. However, its cortical mechanisms and online effects have not been fully understood yet, and it is still unclear whether these long-term improvements are due to

The ability to sustain attention is integral to healthy cognition in aging. The right PFC (rPFC) is critical for maintaining high levels of attentional focus. Whether plasticity of this region can be harnessed to support sustained attention in older adults is unknown. We used transcranial direct current stimulation to increase cortical excitability of the rPFC, while monitoring behavioral and electrophysiological markers of sustained attention in older adults with suboptimal sustained attention capacity. During rPFC transcranial direct current stimulation, fewer lapses of attention occurred an

During perceptual learning the visual representations in the brain are altered, but these changes' causal role has not yet been fully characterized. We used transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to investigate the role of higher visual regions in lateral occipital cortex (LO) in perceptual learning with complex objects. We also investigated whether object learning is dependent on the relevance of the objects for the learning task. Participants were trained in two tasks: object recognition using a backward masking paradigm and an orientation judgment task. During both tasks, an object

Visual selective attention (VSA) optimizes perception and behavioral control by enabling efficient selection of relevant information and filtering of distractors. While focusing resources on task-relevant information helps counteract distraction, dedicated filtering mechanisms have recently been demonstrated, allowing neural systems to implement suitable policies for the suppression of potential interference. Limited evidence is presently available concerning the neural underpinnings of these mechanisms, and whether neural circuitry within the visual cortex might play a causal role in their in

Reinforcement is a key component of slot machine play. Multi-line video slot-machine play can lead to "losses disguised as wins" (LDWs) which are credit gains that total less than the wager on the spin. LDWs only occur on multi-line games, with their frequency increasing with the number of lines played. If perceived as wins, they will be reinforcing to the player despite actually being losses. It has been suggested that players may attempt to maximize their reinforcement rates by playing maximum lines with a minimum bet per line. We recorded the actual game play of 83 participants on two diffe
