The British Sleep Society position statement on Daylight Saving Time in the UK.

There is an ongoing debate in the United Kingdom and in other countries about whether twice-yearly changes into and out of Daylight Saving Time should be abolished. Opinions are divided about whether any abolition of Daylight Saving Time should result in permanent Standard Time, or year-long Daylight Saving Time. The British Sleep Society concludes from the available scientific evidence that circadian and sleep health are affected negatively by enforced changes of clock time (especially in a forward direction) and positively by the availability of natural daylight during the morning. Thus, our

The role of light exposure in infant circadian rhythm establishment: A scoping review perspective.

Environmental light exposure plays a role in the entrainment of the infant circadian rhythm, which is crucial for growth and development. This scoping review aims to evaluate existing literature linking the role of light exposure in the development of the infant circadian rhythm. This scoping review is conducted in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The search strategy was conducted in a total of six databases (PubMed, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Science Direct, Google Scholar, Taylor and Francis, and Wiley) as of August 2024. Reviews, narrative studies, observational stud

Constant light and pinealectomy disrupt daily rhythm in song production and negatively impact reproductive performance in zebra finches.

We assessed the circadian clock control of singing and reproductive performance in zebra finches. Experiment 1 examined changes in body mass, testis size, and plasma corticosterone and testosterone levels in male birds exposed to constant light (LL, 100 lx) and constant darkness (DD, 0.5 lx), with controls on 12L:12D (L = 100 lx, D = 0.5 lx). There was a significant increase in the body mass and testis size under LL and a decrease in testis size under the DD. Using a similar design, experiment 2 assessed the persistence of the circadian rhythm in singing along with activity-rest pattern in coh

Mapping the daily rhythmic transcriptome in the diabetic retina.

Retinal function changes dramatically from day to night, yet clinical diagnosis, treatments, and experimental sampling occur during the day. To begin to address this gap in our understanding of disease pathobiology, this study investigates whether diabetes affects the retina's daily rhythm of gene expression. Diabetic, Ins2Akita/J mice, and non-diabetic littermates were kept under a 12 h:12 h light/dark cycle until 4 months of age. mRNA sequencing was conducted in retinas collected every 4 h throughout the 24 hr light/dark cycle. Computational approaches were used to detect rhythmicity, predic

Chronic recording of the vagus nerve to analyze modulations by the light-dark cycle.

Objective. The vagus nerve is considered to play a key role in the circadian rhythm. Chronic continuous analysis of the vagus nerve activity could contribute to a better understanding of the role of the vagus nerve in light-dark modulations. This paper presents a continuous analysis of spontaneous vagus nerve activity performed in four rats.Approach.We analyzed the vagus electroneurogram (VENG) and electroencephalogram (EEG) over a recording period of 28 d. Spike activity and heart rate estimation were derived from the VENG, and slow-wave activity was derived from the EEG. The presence of repet

The influence of bright and dim light on substrate metabolism, energy expenditure and thermoregulation in insulin-resistant individuals depends on time of day.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: In our modern society, artificial light is available around the clock and most people expose themselves to electrical light and light-emissive screens during the dark period of the natural light/dark cycle. Such suboptimal lighting conditions have been associated with adverse metabolic effects, and redesigning indoor lighting conditions to mimic the natural light/dark cycle more closely holds promise to improve metabolic health. Our objective was to compare metabolic responses to lighting conditions that resemble the natural light/dark cycle in contrast to suboptimal lighting

Metabolism of Melatonin Synthesis-Related Indoles in the Turkey Pineal Organ and Its Modification by Monochromatic Light.

The metabolism of pineal indoles is closely related to alterations in the light and dark phases of a daily cycle. Recent research showed important interspecies differences in the pineal biochemistry, and a strong impact of monochromatic light on many physiological processes in birds. Therefore, the aims of study were to characterize the metabolism of melatonin-synthesis indoles in the pineal organ of the domestic turkey, and to determine the changes occurring in this metabolism under the influence of different wavelengths and intensities of light. For this purpose, 3-week-old turkeys were kept

Environmental Drivers of Questing Activity of Juvenile Black-Legged Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae): Temperature, Desiccation Risk, and Diel Cycles.

Vector feeding behavior can have a profound influence on the transmission of vector-borne diseases. In the case of black-legged ticks, Ixodes scapularis Say, which vectors the agents of Lyme disease, babesiosis, and other pathogens, the timing and propensity of questing can determine which hosts are fed upon as well as the risk of contact with humans. Yet we know little about the controls and constraints on tick host-finding behavior under natural conditions. Ticks must balance the need to quest for blood meal hosts with the risk of desiccation, all on a fixed energy budget. Prior research, pr

[Interrelations of pineal gland morpho-functional indices and immune system organs in rats exposed to natural illumination regime and continuous illumination].

The objective of this investigation was to determine the complex response of the pineal gland (PG) and of the organs of the immune system in Wistar rats in response to a violation of the illumination regime in the experiment. Animals were kept under natural light regime and continuous illumination for 14 days. After that rats were sacrificed and the mass of the body, PG, gonads, thymus and spleen was measured. Thymus and spleen cell subpopulations were determined by flow cytometry. The lipofuscin content in PG was determined by measuring an autofluorescence intensity in frozen tissue sections

Entrainment of the human circadian clock to the natural light-dark cycle.

The electric light is one of the most important human inventions. Sleep and other daily rhythms in physiology and behavior, however, evolved in the natural light-dark cycle [1], and electrical lighting is thought to have disrupted these rhythms. Yet how much the age of electrical lighting has altered the human circadian clock is unknown. Here we show that electrical lighting and the constructed environment is associated with reduced exposure to sunlight during the day, increased light exposure after sunset, and a delayed timing of the circadian clock as compared to a summer natural 14 hr 40 mi

Shifts of the hormonal rhythms of melatonin and cortisol after a 4 h bright-light pulse in different diurnal types.

If applied during corresponding times of the individual melatonin profiles, bright light shifts the circadian phase equally, irrespective of diurnal type. We examined 32 young men: 10 morning types, 11 evening types, and 11 with no predisposition; 16 with high and 16 with low melatonin production. Each completed a 40 h session that included two consecutive nights during which the participants remained, apart from two short breaks during the second day, in bed under an illumination level of 30 lux. A 4 h bright light pulse was applied just after the expected individual melatonin onset the first

Seasonal changes in melatonin concentrations in female Iberian red deer (Cervus elaphus hispanicus).

This Section considered the immense challenges presented by the changing demography of populations (in particular, cross-boundary flow), changing oral and dental disease trends. It also considered the difficulties of gathering data on such information. It then considered how these challenges may affect the education of the dental team in the future. The Section considered the concept of the 'global village' as a representation of the changing world demography. We were at pains to recognize that our role was in considering both emerging and established market economies. In fact, a major part of

Improved effectiveness of artificial insemination of turkey hens associated with ahemeral light-dark cycles and age at photostimulation.

In lighting studies with turkey hens, long ahemeral (AH; non-24 h) light-dark cycles have consistently resulted in greater, although not statistically significant, fertility than control 24 h light-dark cycles. The present study was designed to further evaluate AH lighting effects on fertility by an evaluation of the effectiveness of artificial insemination (AI) under less than optimal conditions for normal fertility, that is, single AI and early age at lighting. Turkey hens had greater percentage fertility of eggs when photostimulated at 30 wk (95.0) than 26 wk (76.3) of age following single,

Simultaneous manifestation of free-running and entrained rhythms in the rat motor activity explained by a multioscillatory system.

Seven groups of 6 young male rats were exposed for 60 calendar days to symmetrical light/dark cycles with different periods (T = 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, and 28 h), and subsequently to constant darkness for 30 days. During exposure to the light/dark cycles, all the animals in all groups presented a motor activity component that was entrained to the external cycles, although the animals subjected to light/dark cycles with periods shorter than 25 hours also presented a nonentrained circadian component. Moreover, in all cases, the effect of masking was present, manifested as a reactivity to the li

[The dynamic circadian mobility of rats under acute and chronic propranolol administration].

Acute administration of propranolol, 1 mg/kg i.p., decreased the amplitude of locomotor circadian rhythm in rats and shifted its acrophase to late night hours. After chronic (10-day) treatment with the drug, morning rises in locomotion after turning out the light became less frequent. The circadian rhythm reorganization observed may depend on the effects of the beta-adrenoblocker on its specific receptors in the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nuclei and/or the pineal gland.

Day-night rhythm disturbance, pineal function and human disease.

Depression, mania and probably starvation all induce changes in pineal function. At present it is unknown what secondary effects on the endocrine and other systems are produced by these changes. Studies in rats have established an entraining effect of melatonin on locomotor activity and a feedback effect on the pineal itself. Studies of jet-lag and of sleep dysregulation in a blind subject established that melatonin treatment has a synchronizing effect in these conditions. Further investigations will be necessary to establish whether melatonin reduction in depression and other disorders leads

Plasma and ocular melatonin rhythms in Amazonian fish.

The daily melatonin rhythms and the effect of light pulse on this hormone were evaluated for Amazonian fish, Astronotus ocellatus and Brycon amazonicus. In experiment 1, fish were exposed to a 12h light:12h dark, and blood was sampled every 4h. In experiment 2, a light pulse was provided in the middle of the dark period for 1h. Melatonin peaked in the middle of the dark period in both species, and both showed an inverted ocular rhythm. The light pulse reduced plasma melatonin to daytime levels, while ocular melatonin remained unchanged. Thus, photic stimulation can be used as a physiological t

Characterization of the daily and circadian valve behavior of the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis.

Marine organisms exhibit a multitude of biological rhythms synchronized with the interactions of the sun-, earth-, and moon cycles. However, the biological rhythms in bivalves remain poorly studied. This study focuses on the native European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis), an endangered species of coastal ecosystems and a key organism in restoring of biogenic reef habitats. We aim to determine whether a molecular endogenous circadian rhythm exists in O. edulis and to characterize its daily expression. To address these questions, the oysters' valve behavior, as an output of the circadian clock expr

Neuronal Bmal1 regulates retinal angiogenesis and neovascularization in mice.

Circadian clocks in the mammalian retina regulate a diverse range of retinal functions that allow the retina to adapt to the light-dark cycle. Emerging evidence suggests a link between the circadian clock and retinopathies though the causality has not been established. Here we report that clock genes are expressed in the mouse embryonic retina, and the embryonic retina requires light cues to maintain robust circadian expression of the core clock gene, Bmal1. Deletion of Bmal1 and Per2 from the retinal neurons results in retinal angiogenic defects similar to when animals are maintained under co
