Pityriasis rosea and pityriasis rosea-like eruption after anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccination: a report of five cases and review of the literature.

Only a few cases of pityriasis rosea (PR)/pityriasis rosea-like eruption (PRLE) after anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccination have been reported. In the period May 2021- February 2022 we observed five cases of clinically typical PR that appeared 2 to 3 weeks after anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccination with BNT162b2 (3 patients) or mRNA- 1273 (2 patients). In 4 patients PR appeared after the first vaccination; in one patient after the second one. In 3 patients a biopsy for histopathological examinations was carried out. Results were typical for PR. In all patients laboratory examinations were within normal ranges. A…

Pityriasis Versicolor in a Southern Ground Hornbill (Bucorvus leadbeateri).

A 20-year-old southern ground hornbill (Bucorvus leadbeateri) developed hyperpigmented macules on its gular pouch, resembling the lesions typically seen in humans with pityriasis versicolor. Cytologic examination revealed over 100 budding yeasts per oil immersion field. Fungal culture showed rare growth of smooth, cream-colored yeast colonies, identified by PCR as Malassezia slooffiae. Histopathological analysis showed lymphocytic perivascular dermatitis. Periodic acid-Schiff staining revealed rare forms of yeasts between the layers of the stratum corneum. This clinical report provides further…

Dermoscopy Differentiates Guttate Psoriasis from a Mimicker-Pityriasis Rosea.

BACKGROUND: Guttate psoriasis (GP) and pityriasis rosea (PR) are a part of papulosquamous disorders that have very similar clinical features and often require histopathology to confirm the diagnosis. Dermoscopy has emerged as a noninvasive, cost-effective technique that can aid in the diagnosis of inflammatory skin diseases like GP and PR. OBJECTIVE: To study and compare the dermoscopic features of GP and PR. METHODS: Twenty consecutive patients each with GP or PR were enrolled in the study. The diagnosis of GP and PR were made clinically and on histopathology. Dermoscopic images were taken …

Pityriasis rosea during omalizumab treatment for chronic spontaneous urticaria.

Pityriasis rosea (PR) is an exanthematous disease whose etiology is related to reactivation of herpes human herpesviruses 6 (HHV-6) and 7 (HHV-7). We observed two cases of PR arising during omalizumab therapy for chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU). Here we report for the first time PR occurring during omalizumab treatment. After PR diagnosis, viral serology was performed. Data in literature about omalizumab mechanism of action, PR and HHV-6/7 infection were analyzed in order to identify possible correlations. In both our cases IgM against HHV-6 and HHV-7 were negative. The first patient prese…

Systemic therapies of pityriasis rubra pilaris: a systematic review.

Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is a rare papulosquamous disorder. Treatment is challenging; the armamentarium consists of topical corticosteroids, phototherapy, classic systemic treatments such as retinoids or immunosuppressive drugs, and most recently biologicals. However, the relative effectiveness of therapies is unclear. Our objective was to review the published literature on systemic treatment of PRP. A systematic review was conducted on PubMed and the Cochrane Library up to 5 September 2017. Studies evaluating any systemic treatments of PRP (except for historical treatments) were include…

Possible role of plasmacytoid dendritic cells in pityriasis lichenoides.

BACKGROUND: Plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) and their product, type I interferons (IFNs), have been implicated in the pathogenesis of several skin disorders characterized by an interface dermatitis (ID) pattern, such as lichen planus (LP). A type I IFN signature has previously been documented in pityriasis lichenoides (PL). Although pDCs are known to be the main source and most potent producers of local type I IFNs, their role in PL has not been investigated. AIM: To investigate the role of pDCs in PL. METHODS: In total, 20 cases of PL and 20 comparable cases of LP were immunohistochemic…

Management of refractory pityriasis rubra pilaris: challenges and solutions.

Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is a rare chronic inflammatory papulosquamous skin disease. Its clinical presentation and evolution is very variable. The most frequent clinical features are follicular papules, progressing to yellow-orange erythroderma with round small areas of normal skin and the well-demarcated palmoplantar keratoderma. Actually, six different types of PRP have been described based on clinical characteristics, age of onset, and prognosis. The pathogenesis is still unknown, and treatment can be challenging. Available treatments are mainly based on case reports or case series of…
