Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms in Children With Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

OBJECTIVE: This meta-analysis aimed to robustly estimate differences in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms between children and adolescents with and without neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). METHOD: Systematic literature searches were conducted in Scopus, PsycINFO, Web of Science, PubMed, and ProQuest in September 2022, with a supplemental search conducted in Google Scholar in February 2023. The searches identified 2,153 unique articles. Screening identified 114 academic journal articles that assessed parent/caregiver- or teacher-reported ADHD symptoms for children/adolesc

Impact of depressive symptoms on adverse effects in people with epilepsy on antiseizure medication therapy.

OBJECTIVE: We studied the impact of depressive symptoms on adverse effects (AEs) in people with epilepsy (PWE) on antiseizure medication (ASM) therapy. An effect of depression on the AE burden has already been reported. We studied the correlation of various depressive symptoms with specific AEs to assess which AEs are especially prone to being confounded by particular depressive symptoms. METHODS: PWE filled in a variety of questionnaires including the "Neurological Disorder Depression Inventory for Epilepsy" (NDDI-E), "Emotional Thermometers 4" (ET4) and "Liverpool Adverse Events Profile" (L

Electroencephalographic compatibility with fitness to drive: A nationwide survey among Swiss neurologists.

OBJECTIVE: The Swiss guidelines for driving with epilepsy require that electroencephalogram (EEG) findings must be compatible with the fitness to drive (FTD) without specifying any criteria. This nationwide survey investigated how Swiss neurologists implement this requirement in clinical practice. METHODS: An online survey, including 19 EEG examples and statements about the compatibility of the EEG with FTD, was distributed to all members of the Swiss Society of Clinical Neurophysiology and all Swiss neurological clinics with residency programs. Descriptive statistics and Fleiss' Kappa for in

Intracerebral electrographic activity following a single dose of diazepam nasal spray: A pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Rescue benzodiazepine medication can be used to treat seizure clusters, which are intermittent, stereotypic episodes of frequent seizure activity that are distinct from a patient's usual seizure pattern. The NeuroPace RNS® System is a device that detects abnormal electrographic activity through intracranial electrodes and administers electrical stimulation to control seizures. Reductions in electrographic activity over days to weeks have been associated with the longer-term efficacy of daily antiseizure medications (ASMs). In this pilot study, electrographic activity over hours to d

Regulation of headache response and transcriptomic network by the trigeminal ganglion clock.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the circadian features of the trigeminal ganglion in a mouse model of headache. BACKGROUND: Several headache disorders, such as migraine and cluster headache, are known to exhibit distinct circadian rhythms of attacks. The circadian basis for these rhythmic pain responses, however, remains poorly understood. METHODS: We examined trigeminal ganglion ex vivo and single-cell cultures from Per2::LucSV reporter mice and performed immunohistochemistry. Circadian behavior and transcriptomics were investigated using a novel combination of trigeminovascular and circadian mo

Immediate single-tooth implant placement in bony defect sites: A 10-year randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether an intact buccal bony plate is a prerequisite for immediate implant placement in postextraction sockets. The aim of this 10-year randomized controlled trial was to compare peri-implant soft and hard tissue parameters, esthetic ratings of, and patient-reported satisfaction with immediate implant placement in postextraction sockets with buccal bony defects ≥5 mm in the esthetic zone versus delayed implant placement after alveolar ridge preservation. METHODS: Patients presenting a failing tooth in the esthetic region and a buccal bony defect ≥5 mm after an extra

Brain network entropy, depression, and quality of life in people with traumatic brain injury and seizure disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) often precedes the onset of epileptic (ES) or psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES) with depression being a common comorbidity. The relationship between depression severity and quality of life (QOL) may be related to resting-state network complexity. We investigated these relationships in adults with TBI-only, TBI + ES, or TBI + PNES using Sample Entropy (SampEn), a measure of physiologic signals complexity. METHODS: Adults with TBI-only (n = 60), TBI + ES (n = 21), or TBI + PNES (n = 56) completed the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II; depression

Epilepsy surgery for children with epileptic spasms: A systematic review and meta-analysis with focus on predictors and outcomes.

To conduct a systematic review of the literature regarding rates and predictors of favorable seizure outcome after resective surgery for epileptic spasms (ES) in pediatric patients. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses standards were followed. We searched PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane CENTRAL for articles published on the prevalence or incidence of epileptic spasm since 1985. Abstract, full-text review, and data extraction were conducted by two independent reviewers. Meta-analysis was performed to assess overall seizure freedom rate. Subject-level analysis was

Daith piercing: Revisited from the perspective of auricular acupuncture systems. A narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Daith piercing is a special ear-piercing method that punctures the crus of the helix. The penetrated site at the ear's innermost point is assumed to stimulate a pressure point associated with the vagus nerve. It has been reported that the pierced spot relieves migraine and tension-type headaches by activating vagal afferents, leading to the inhibition of neurons in the caudal trigeminal nucleus via the nucleus tractus solitarii. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this narrative literature review is to summarize the current state of knowledge concerning daith piercing for the treatment of

Ivermectin as a promising therapeutic option for onchocerciasis-associated epilepsy.

Onchocerciasis, commonly known as river blindness, is a neglected tropical disease caused by the parasite Onchocerca volvulus. It can lead to blindness and visual impairment. Studies have also demonstrated a link between onchocerciasis and epilepsy, with there being a correlation between onchocerciasis endemicity and epilepsy prevalence. Onchocerciasis-associated epilepsy (OAE) emerges predominantly in individuals aged 3-18, with a notable prevalence in regions where onchocerciasis transmission persists. These areas exhibit elevated rates of epilepsy, underscoring the significant impact of ong

Which Psychosocial Risks Are Necessary for Developing Depression During Adolescence? A Novel Approach Applying Necessary Condition Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Although many factors predict adolescent depression, risks that operate as necessary conditions (ie, absence of the factor conveys absence of the outcome) have been largely unexplored. This study aimed to evaluate which psychosocial risk factors might serve as necessary conditions for future onset of depression across adolescence. METHOD: At baseline, cognitive and personality risks, symptom severity, stressful events, and past depression history were assessed among 382 adolescents (225 girls; mean age = 12.6), who were then followed over 2 years with repeated diagnostic interviews

Raphe Nuclei Echogenicity and Diameter of Third Ventricle in Schizophrenia Measured by Transcranial Sonography.

INTRODUCTION: Serotonergic system hyperactivity at 5-HT2A receptors on glutamate neurons in the cerebral cortex is one of the pathways that is theoretically linked to psychosis. In addition to neurotransmitter dysfunction, volumetric studies have revealed the loss of cortical gray matter and ventricular enlargement in patients with schizophrenia, although there is no case-control research on patients with schizophrenia to evaluate echogenicity of raphe nuclei (RN) or diameter of the third ventricle (DTV). To address these issues, the present study assessed midbrain RN, as the main source of br
