Despite the fact that up to 15% of patients in an aesthetic surgery practice have body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), little has been written about the condition in the oculoplastic literature. The authors describe 3 patients with suspected BDD who presented with perceived periocular defects. To appear "Asian," a 39-year-old Hispanic woman underwent over 30 surgeries. She developed disfiguring scars and lagophthalmos with corneal scarring, remained unsatisfied, and tragically committed suicide. A 52-year-old woman with moderate dermatochalasis underwent a blepharoplasty to improve her vision and a

BACKGROUND: Outcomes related to preexisting breast implants after cardiothoracic procedures are poorly characterized. This study evaluated complications after minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS), median sternotomy (MS), and electrophysiologic procedures (EP) in patients with preexisting breast implants.
METHODS: A retrospective review of patients with prior breast implants who underwent MICS, MS, or EP from 1994 to 2019 was performed. Demographic, treatment, and outcome characteristics were recorded. χ 2 Test and analysis of variance were used to perform statistical comparisons.

BACKGROUND: Recent clinical experience with migraine surgery has demonstrated both the safety and the efficacy of operative decompression of the peripheral nerves in the face, head, and neck for the alleviation of migraine symptoms. Because of the perceived novelty of these procedures, and the paranoia surrounding a theoretical loss of clinical territory, neurologists have condemned the field of migraine surgery. The Patient Safety Subcommittee of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons ventured to investigate the published safety track record of migraine surgery in the existing body of liter

Ophthalmic plastic surgery, a sub-specialty within ophthalmology, encompasses diagnosis and treatment of diseases and abnormalities of the eyelids, orbit, and lacrimal systems. Eyelid carcinoma is a more common entity as well as blepharoptosis seen in children and adults. It can usually be corrected by surgery involving the levator palpebrae superioris or a tarsofrontalis suspension using synthetic material or human tissue. Retraction of the upper eyelid, the opposite of blepharoptosis, may be seen in patients with thyroid eye (Graves') disease. Treatment by recession of the levator aponeurosi

The protracted Syrian conflict has devastated healthcare infrastructure across Syria with impacts on both the conflict and non-conflict related surgical needs of patients. This review summarises the literature related to peripheral limb surgery performed in Syria between March 2011 to January 2024 to determine the influence of the conflict on surgical capacity and provision. A systematic review based on Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines was performed using six academic and one grey literature database. Acellular dermal matrix (ADM) is a tissue-engineered biological scaffold widely adopted in plastic reconstructive surgery, yet its application in spine surgery remains largely underexplored. No prior systematic review has synthesized the available evidence. A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, Cochrane CENTRAL, Web of Science, and Scopus was performed from inception through 31 July 2026, following PRISMA 2020 guidelines (PROSPERO: CRD420261326660). Studies were stratified a priori into three evidence tiers: direct spine surgery evidence, craniovertebral/neuraxis evidence, and indirect crania

Treatment of cleft lip alveolus and/or palate includes surgical repair to treat communication-related outcomes such as velopharyngeal insufficiency and otological dysfunction. Robot-assisted surgery has recently evolved into a promising adjunct to conventional surgery, particularly for complex procedures such as transoral (reconstructive) surgery. This structured literature review aims to investigate whether robot-assisted transoral cleft palate repair enhances communication (i.e., speech and otological) outcomes compared to conventional manual cleft palate surgery. A literature search was per

OBJECTIVES: The reconstruction of oral and maxillofacial defects poses considerable challenges due to their complex nature. Surgeons often face difficulties in selecting the most appropriate flap for such repairs. The procedure involving vascularized free flaps typically requires prolonged procedural times and places significant demands on surgical teams. In specific cases, facial artery-based flaps serve as an effective alternative. This article discusses the current utilization and future prospects of facial artery-based flaps in the reconstruction of oral and maxillofacial defects.

BACKGROUND: Urethral strictures are a common and persistent pathology in urology with significant clinical repercussions. Our aim is to provide an overview of the general aspects of this condition.
METHODS: A comprehensive review of the literature from PubMed was conducted covering the period from 2020 to 2023. This was complemented by a synthesis of the latest guidelines from the American, European, and French Urological Associations (AUA, EAU, AFU), as well as references from textbooks.
RESULTS: Urethral stricture is defined by a narrowing of less than 16 French. The urethra is divided int

UNLABELLED: Dural defect closure after resection of cranioorbital meningiomas has its own specifics. Extended malignant lesions and common large bone defects involving various anatomical regions require multiple implants or implants with complex geometry. The features of this stage of reconstruction were described in the previous issue of the Burdenko Journal of Neurosurgery. At the same time, contact of implant with nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses dictates additional requirements for tightness of soft tissue reconstruction and inertness of material. In this review, we describe modern and h

Cleft lip with or without cleft palate is one of the most common congenital malformations, with an average prevalence of 1 in 1000 live births. Cleft lip and/or palate is incredibly phenotypically diverse, with constant advancements and refinements in how we care for patients. This article presents an in-depth review of the latest advances and current evidence in cleft lip and palate surgery. This includes presurgical infant orthopedics, perioperative practice patterns including use of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols, patient-reported outcome measures, and the latest adjuncts

Excessive central airway collapse (ECAC) is a condition characterized by the excessive narrowing of the trachea and mainstem bronchi during expiration, which can be caused by Tracheobronchomalacia (TBM) or Excessive Dynamic Airway Collapse (EDAC). The initial standard of care for central airway collapse is to address any underlying conditions such as asthma, COPD, and gastro-esophageal reflux. In severe cases, when medical treatment fails, a stent-trial is offered to determine if surgical correction is a viable option, and tracheobronchoplasty is suggested as a definitive treatment approach.
