OBJECTIVE: Since data are scarce regarding secondary triatomine species in the Brazilian state of Paraná, this study investigated infestations in inhabited and abandoned houses and in various other nearby structures in rural areas of that state.
METHODS: Triatomines were manually captured in inhabited and uninhabited houses and other nearby structures in nine areas (eight municipalities and one district) of Paraná from June 1996 to February 2000. Eight bovine hearts with lesions of eosinophilic myositis (EM) and 2 bovine hearts without EM lesions were collected at slaughter. Blood samples from these 10 hearts, and the heart of a newborn calf also were collected. Patients with seropositive rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have elevated titers of precipitating antibody toward an antigen designated RA nuclear antigen (RANA). Anti-RANA reactivity has been associated with prior Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. A biomedical survey was carried out in North Samar Province, Philipines to update information on the prevalence of parasitic and other infectious diseases. A total of 1,394 stool specimens, 1,859 blood smears and 1,274 sera were collected from persons living in 8 barrios. This preparation has been supplied us in three forms: citrated blood plasma, serum, and globulin concentrate. We have tested these preparations in vitro and in vivo for inactivating or neutralizing or, to use perhaps a better term, antiviral effects against a constant, potent, filtrate virus of poliomyelitis.
