Dental Imaging - A basic guide for the radiologist.

BACKGROUND: As dental imaging accounts for approximately 40 % of all X-ray examinations in Germany, profound knowledge of this topic is essential not only for the dentist but also for the clinical radiologist. This review focuses on basic imaging findings regarding the teeth. Therefore, tooth structure, currently available imaging techniques and common findings in conserving dentistry including endodontology, periodontology, implantology and dental trauma are presented. METHODS: Literature research on the current state of dental radiology was performed using Pubmed. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: C

Prophylactic and Therapeutic Antibiotic Patterns of Lebanese Dentists for the Management of Dentoalveolar Abscesses.

INTRODUCTION: General dentists issue approximately 10% of antibiotic prescriptions across the global medical community consummation. The use of antibiotics for the management of dentoalveolar infections should be considered only in the presence of an increased risk of a systemic involvement or to prevent metastatic infections. This study aimed to investigate the prophylactic and therapeutic antibiotic prescription patterns of Lebanese dentists for the management of dentoalveolar abscesses. The aim was to evaluate the influence of the patients' medical condition and clinical signs data on the p

Treatment of an Unusual Non-Tooth Related Enamel Pearl (EP) and 3 Teeth-Related EPs with Localized Periodontal Disease Without Teeth Extractions: A Case Report.

Enamel may be found ectopically as enamel pearls (EPs), which are frequently associated with advanced localized periodontal (LP) destruction. This study presents a case in which an unusual non-tooth-related enamel pearl and three teeth-related enamel pearls with LP disease were found and treated without teeth extractions. A 47-year-old female patient presented at the New York University College of Dentistry with four EPs, three of which were associated with periodontal pockets and/or bleeding on probing (BOP), and one of them not related to any tooth. Periodontal therapy included scaling and r

This condition can be treated orthodontically, surgically, or therapeutically or by prosthodontic rehabilitation. A 10-year-old female patient presented to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Gazi University Faculty of Dentistry, with limited mouth opening. She got injury in the face when she was 5 years old. Extraoral and intraoral examination findings were facial asymmetry on the left side, micrognathic m

Distribution and characteristics of molar-incisor hypomineralization.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Developmental disorders of teeth are the problems that are becoming more present in pediatric dentistry, especially on first permanent molars and incisors. Molar Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH) is proposed term for this phenomenon. The aim of this study was to establish the MIH prevalence in children living in the Foca municipality (Bosnia and Herzegovina) as well as to assess characteristics and expression of hypomineralization within the tested population. METHODS: A total of 141 children from the Foca municipality, 8 years of age, were included in this study. Criteria acco

Improving tobacco dependence education among the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry faculty.

Tobacco-related health problems are among the most preventable forms of illness. By assuming proactive tobacco use counseling roles, dental professionals can help reduce the number of people who use tobacco. Minimum standards for intervention by dental care providers were established more than a decade ago by the American Dental Association and the American Dental Hygienists' Association. The goal of Loma Linda University School of Dentistry in its tobacco-cessation efforts is to move beyond those standards towards more effective interventions. The school conducted a study to determine the for

Dentists' awareness toward vaccine preventable diseases.

Effective infection control in dentistry is unfeasible without an adequate immunization program for dental health care providers (DHCPs). Such an assumption is demonstrated for some vaccine preventable infectious diseases (VPIDs), such as Hepatitis B, Influenza and Varicella. However, excluding Hepatitis B vaccine, immunization programs for DHCPs are few and often unclear about which vaccinations are recommended, thus leading to generally low awareness and consequent low vaccination rates. This survey investigated dentists' awareness toward VPIDs. At the moment of registration to a dental cong

The environmental effects of dental amalgam.

Dental amalgam is one of the most commonly used materials in restorative dentistry. However, one of its major components, mercury, is of particular concern due to its potential adverse effects on humans and the environment. In this review, the environmental impact of dental amalgam will be discussed, with particular reference to the effects attributed to its mercury component. Mercury commonly occurs in nature as sulfides and in a number of minerals. Globally, between 20,000-30,000 tons of mercury are discharged into the environment each year as a result of human activities. According to a rec

AIM: To investigate the oral health status and oral microflora of children who have received heart and heart-lung transplants. Parental knowledge and current practice of oral health procedures by the child were also investigated. SAMPLE AND METHOD: Thirty-five children attending the Cardio-Thoracic Transplant Unit, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children were included. Measurements were compared with children matched by age and gender attending the trauma clinic at the Department of Paediatric Dentistry, Eastman Dental Hospital. Teeth were examined for the presence or absence of caries or e

Topographic and Morphometric Assessment of Facial Foramina in Maxilla, Mandible, and Zygomatic Bones: Anatomical and Clinical Relevance.

BACKGROUND: The anatomy of the zygomatic bone, maxilla, periorbital, and mental regions is important because important vessels and nerves pass through these regions. The zygomaticofacial nerve can be injured during facial surgeries, especially during zygomatic implant surgeries. Infraorbital and mental nerves are among the nerves blocked during local anesthesia in dentistry. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the topographic and morphometric characteristics of the zygomaticofacial, infraorbital, and mental foramina, and to determine their anatomical variations and clinical significance in order to provid

Factors Influencing the Choice of Conservative and Surgical Procedures in Dental Patients from Poland: A Single-Center Retrospective Analysis.

Background/Objectives: Oral health behaviors can be shaped by various factors, both global (such as the COVID-19 pandemic) and individual (e.g., gender, age). This retrospective study aims to assess the factors influencing the choice between conservative and surgical dental procedures among patients based on the example of the university specialized center in Poznan. Methods: We explored the patient dataset from the University Center of Dentistry and Specialized Medicine (Poznan, Poland), covering the period from 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2023. Revitalizing the Dull: A Classic Approach to Nonvital Tooth Bleaching.

Nonvital tooth bleaching is a treatment designed to enhance the cosmetic appearance of discolored teeth that have lost vitality. This procedure has become increasingly popular in contemporary dentistry due to its effectiveness. Among the various chemical agents used for this purpose, sodium perborate, when combined with hydrogen peroxide, has proven to be one of the most efficient solutions for achieving noticeable whitening outcomes. Sodium perborate is a stable oxidizing agent, frequently mixed with hydrogen peroxide to form a bleaching paste. This paste is then placed directly into the pulp
