Prolonged testing of marine fish oil (FO) as a dietary supplement is necessary because of widespread claims that it is antiatherogenic. The basis for such claims is inadequate because atherogenesis is chronic and may not respond to short-term changes induced by dietary treatments. A proven (vervet) model of atherosclerosis promoted by an atherogenic diet (AD) was used to test dietary supplementation with Atlantic pilchard FO for 20 months in 47 omnivorous nonhuman primates. We have examined the effects of direct intratracheal instillation of purified eosinophil granule proteins on pulmonary function and airway responsiveness in primates. Using stereoscopic angiography, the entire arterial system of the foot of the macaque was analyzed. The arteria saphena, instead of the a. tibialis anterior, reaches the dorsum of the foot, and its branches supply most of the foot. The dorsal arteries are dominant as far as the metatarsal spaces of the lateral four toes. The a. metatarsea dorsalis II showed a tendency to be the single dominant artery and to give rise to even the a. digitalis communis plantaris IV through the catella plantaris distalis. This tendency was observed more clearly in other macaques species than the Japanese monkey.

Orthostatic cardiovascular reflexes were evaluated in conscious cynomolgus monkeys during interruption of the renin-angiotensin system with the renin inhibitor: RIP (Pro-His-Pro-Phe-His-Phe-Phe-Val-Tyr-Lys-OH). Normal and Ascaris reactor primates were compared for their bronchial pulmonary response to aerosolized leukotriene D4 (LTD4). When 10 micrograms/ml LTD4 was aerosolized (total amount delivered to endotracheal tube was 1.0 micrograms) into the lungs of 6 normal primates, a small increase in total lung resistance (RL) was noted (4.4 +/- 4.5% increase, in 19 separate challenges). The carcinogenic potential of cycasin and methylazoxymethanol (MAM) acetate was investigated in nonhuman primates. Old-world monkeys (rhesus, cynomolgus, and African green monkeys) received cycasin and/or MAM acetate by oral or ip routes up to 11 years. The current outbreak of Bundibugyo virus (BDBV) in Africa is a global public health concern particularly as there are no licensed medical countermeasures (MCM). Well characterized animal models that accurately replicate human BDBV infection are needed to develop effective MCM.
