Angelman syndrome: A review highlighting musculoskeletal and anatomical aberrations.

Angelman's syndrome (AS) is a genetic neurodevelopment disorder. The cause is a known abnormality involving the maternal inherited ubiquitin-protein ligase (UBE3A) gene. Clinical characteristics universal to the disorder are well documented in the literature and include developmental delay, seizures, ataxia, altered tone, severely impaired speech and intellect, as well as an overall happy demeanor, frequent bouts of laughter, and hypermotoric behavior. Associated with this disorder are several musculoskeletal aberrations. To date, a review of case studies reporting on these musculoskeletal cha

The nasal complex of Neanderthals: an entry portal to their place in human ancestry.

Neanderthals are one of the most intensely studied groups of extinct humans, as aspects of their phylogeny and functional morphology remain controversial. They have long been described as cold adapted but recent analyses of their nasal anatomy suggest that traits formerly considered adaptations may be the result of genetic drift. This study performs quantitative and qualitative analysis of aspects of the nasal complex (NC) in Neanderthals and other later Pleistocene fossils from Europe and Africa. A geographically diverse sample of modern human crania was used to establish an anatomical baseli

The influence of lower lip position on the perceived attractiveness of chin prominence.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the influence of the lower lip prominence for varying degrees of chin prominence in the sagittal plane and to establish whether lower lip prominence affects the perceived desire for surgery. To assess differences in preference between orthodontists and laypeople as well as the effect of age, gender, and ethnicity of observers on perceptions of attractiveness and desire for surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A silhouette of an idealized profile image was created. The image was manipulated to create six images demonstrating different degrees of retrogenia and progenia alter

Changes in the pattern of patients receiving surgical-orthodontic treatment.

INTRODUCTION: The characteristics of patients who seek and accept orthognathic surgery appear to be changing over time but have not been well documented in the 21st century. METHODS: Records for patients who had orthognathic surgery at the University of North Carolina from 1996 to 2000 and from 2006 to 2010 were reviewed to collect data for changes in the prevalence of patients with mandibular deficiency (Class II), maxillary deficiency or mandibular prognathism (Class III), long face, and asymmetry problems. The changes were compared with those in previous time periods and at other locations

Comparison of soft and hard tissue profiles of orthognathic surgery patients treated recently and 20 years earlier.

The aim of this study was to assess, by means of lateral cephalometric radiographs, any differences in the pretreatment soft and hard tissue facial profiles of patients who relatively recently underwent orthognathic surgery compared with those whose surgery occurred 20 years before. The pretreatment soft and hard tissue profiles of 91 orthognathic surgery patients were analyzed. These patients were divided into 2 groups. The first group consisted of 35 patients that were treated within the period from 1982 to 1986. The second group included 56 patients treated between 2000 and 2002. To assess

Determining the anatomy of the descending palatine artery and pterygoid plates with computed tomography in Class III patients.

PURPOSE: Understanding the anatomy of the pterygomaxillary junction region helps prevent blood loss in Le Fort I osteotomy. Here, we determined the location of the descending palatine artery and the structure of the pterygomaxillary region. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study group consisted of 82 Japanese patients with mandibular prognathism and asymmetry, with and without maxillary retrognathism or asymmetry. A total of 164 sides were measured and divided into right versus left, men versus women, and bimaxillary osteotomy (B) versus mandibular osteotomy (S). Lateral and frontal cephalograms and

Impact of evolution on the eustachian tube.

I posit that humans appear to be the only species that develops otitis media. If animals in the wild had developed middle-ear disease to any significant degree, they would have been selected out during evolution because they would not have survived their predators given the associated hearing loss. Why do humans have otitis media? Evolution has had a significant impact. It is well known that humans are born 12 months too early, which is the result of adaptations to bipedalism and our big brain that, over time, resulted in a relatively small female pelvic outlet compared with nonhuman primates.

Aspects of achondroplasia in the skulls of dwarf transgenic mice: a cephalometric study.

Achondroplasia, the most common short-limbed dwarfism in humans, results from a single nucleotide substitution in the gene for fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3). FGFR3 regulates bone growth in part via the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway (MAPK). To examine the role of this pathway in chondrocyte differentiation, a transgenic mouse was generated that expresses a constitutively active mutant of MEK1 in chondrocytes and exhibits dwarfing characteristics typical of human achondroplasia, i.e., shortened axial and appendicular skeletons, mid-facial hypoplasia, and dome-shaped cran

Somatosensory-evoked potential to evaluate the trigeminal nerve after sagittal split osteotomy.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the onset period of trigeminal nerve hypoesthesia during bilateral sagittal split osteotomy, with the use of the trigeminal somatosensory-evoked potential (TSEP). STUDY DESIGN: Subjects were 10 patients with mandibular prognathism who underwent setback surgery. Intraoperative TSEP was measured 4 times: just before the commencement of the surgery, immediately after the induction of general anesthesia; after the medial periosteal dissection of the alveolar neurovascular bundle; after the sagittal split of bone; and after semirigid fixation with

Three-dimensional model simulation in orthognathic surgery.

Surgery simulation with a three-dimensional model constructed with stereolithography from digital image data has proven to be useful in the maxillofacial area. The simulation and surgery of Le Fort I and bilateral sagittal split osteotomies were carried out in two patients. The models replicating the facial skeleton with precise internal anatomy facilitated design of the osteotomy and preparation of osteosynthesis. Each sectioned segment of the maxilla and mandible was accurately repositioned by transferring the positional relationships of multiple reference points on the model to the bone sur

[Influence of the soft palate on tongue statics and mandibular growth. Therapeutic conclusions].

The soft palate has a major influence on mandibulo-lingual statics. Thus in the case of congenital cleft palate, there is in general glossoptosis with mandibular retrognathia. Conversely, palatal shortening may be associated with functional mandibular prognathia which it is possible to correct by urano-staphylo-pharyn-goplasty, if carried out sufficiently early. In many cases of mandibular prognathia the soft palate has a special shape and orientation. The problem is to know whether this appearance is secondary to the dysmorphosis or partially responsible for it.

Winchester syndrome. A case report and literature review.

The mucopolysaccharidoses are a group of inherited lysosomal storage diseases that are caused by a deficiency of specific enzymes. The acid mucopolysaccharides are stored in tissue and excreted in large quantities in the urine. The storage of this material leads to effects on a wide variety of tissues and to remarkable changes in morphologic features. Winchester syndrome is a rare disorder in the group of mucopolysaccharidoses. This article is a report of a case with classic clinical, radiologic, and biochemical characteristics of the Winchester syndrome.
