Male rats of the strains with low (LE) high excitability (HE) of the nervous system have been used in this study. Half of the animals of each strain were neurotized in accordance with the Hecht's scheme. Five triple-plaque purified vaccinia virus (VV) lines generated from smallpox Sevac VARIE vaccine (strain Praha) and three VV virus lines similarly derived from Wyeth DRYVAX vaccine were used for preparation of recombinants expressing the hepatitis B virus preS2-S gene. The same five Praha-derived virus lines were used to construct recombinants expressing the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) glycoprotein I (gpI) gene. Recombinants and their parental viruses were tested for the residual neurovirulence in mice. The virus lines and the recombinants derived therefrom differed markedly in this respect.

Oxidative stress may play an important role in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) make up a group of antioxidant enzymes. Cytochrome p450 (CYP) enzymes can influence oxidation and reduction reactions. We investigated the potential effects of GST and CYP enzymes in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. Calciphylaxis is a rare and life-threatening condition of progressive cutaneous necrosis secondary to small and medium-sized vessel calcification that is seen almost exclusively in patients with end-stage renal disease and hyperparathyroidism. We report a case of calciphylaxis that may very well be due to a long-term steroid use in a rheumatoid arthritis patient who had neither end-stage renal disease nor hyperparathyroidism. We also discuss the possible role of protein S deficiency as a contributing factor.

Total Protein S (tPS) and free Protein S (fPS) antigen levels were measured in 3788 healthy blood donors. Men had higher levels of both parameters than women (P < 0.001). Age had no effect on tPS in men, although there was a slight reduction in fPS levels with increasing age. Many surface proteins of Gram-positive bacteria contain motifs, about 50 amino acids long, called S-layer homology (SLH) motifs. Bacillus anthracis, the causal agent of anthrax, synthesizes two S-layer proteins, each with three SLH motifs towards the amino-terminus. 170 thyroid carcinomas were investigated for the presence of S-100-protein-positive Langerhans cells (LC) and the expression of Leu-M1-antigen. A monoclonal anti-DNA antibody PME77, spontaneously produced in autoimmune B/W mice, has been found to recognize identical protein(s) present at the surface of several human cell types involved in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus: glomeruli, platelets, erythrocytes, T and B cells, and neuronal tissue. Data indicate that protein(s) could represent a major stimulus or the target of anti-DNA autoimmunity and could account for tissue lesions observed in this disease.

Two proteins (C8S2 and C9S3) were purified from Dendroaspis angusticeps venom. Whereas protein C8S2 comprises 124 amino acid residues, protein C9S3 contains 125 and each includes 16 half-cystines.
