Keeping our immigrants healthy: hygienist doctrine in the Hospedaria de Imigrantes da Ilha das Flores.

The Hospedaria de Imigrantes (Immigrant Lodgings) da Ilha das Flores was established in 1883 in accordance with the hygienist thinking of the time. Immigrants were isolated on the east coast of Guanabara Bay because of the epidemics of yellow fever which returned to the Imperial capital every summer since 1849-1850. Hygienists attributed the disease to the precarious health conditions in the city of Rio de Janeiro, which enabled germs to multiply and infect the atmosphere. As physicians reinterpreted the disease in light of Pasteurian theory, new procedures were adopted to receive immigrants,

Public health challenges and legacies of Japan's response to the Ebola virus disease outbreak in West Africa 2014 to 2015.

The largest outbreak of Ebola virus disease occurred in West Africa in 2014 and resulted in unprecedented transmission even in distant countries. In Japan, only nine individuals were screened for Ebola and there was no confirmed case. However, the government promoted the reinforcement of response measures and interagency collaboration, with training and simulation exercises conducted country-wide. The legacies included: publication of a communication policy on case disclosure, a protocol for collaboration between public health and other agencies, and establishing an expert committee to assembl

Brief report: Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus transmitted through solid organ transplantation--Massachusetts, 2008.

Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) is a rodent-borne arenavirus found worldwide. House mice (Mus musculus) are the natural reservoir, but LCMV also can infect other wild, pet, and laboratory rodents (e.g., rats, mice, guinea pigs, and hamsters). Humans can be infected through exposure to rodent excreta. Person-to-person transmission has occurred only through maternal-fetal transmission and solid organ transplantation. LCMV infection in humans can be asymptomatic or cause a spectrum of illness ranging from isolated fever to meningitis and encephalitis. Overall case fatality is <1%. Fetal

Partnership and promise: evolution of the African river-blindness campaigns.

This article describes the evolution of the partnership, between various health and developmental agencies, that has sustained the campaign against river blindness in Africa. The international community was oblivious to the devastating public-health and socio-economic consequences of onchocerciasis until towards the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s. Then a 'Mission to West Africa', supported by the United Nations Development Programme, and a visit to the sub-region by the president of the World Bank culminated, in 1974, in the inauguration of the Onchocerciasis Control Programme

Identification and treatment of group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal infections. Role of the pediatrician and the nurse-practitioner.

The risk of rheumatic fever in childhood continues to be high in the United States, especially where crowded living conditions promote epidemic spread of streptococcal pharyngitis. Early identification and appropriate penicillin therapy shorten the acute streptococcal illness and greatly reduce the occurrence of sequelae. Florid disease usually presents no therapeutic dilemma, but a firm scientific basis for definitive diagnosis and treatment of the carrier state, inapparent infection, mild clinical disease, or relapse is lacking. Appreciation of these unresolved issues is helpful in developin

Agnogenic practices and corporate political strategy: the legitimation of UK gambling industry-funded youth education programmes.

Agnogenic practices-designed to create ignorance or doubt-are well-established strategies employed by health-harming industries (HHI). However, little is known about their use by industry-funded organizations delivering youth education programmes. We applied a previously published framework of corporate agnogenic practices to analyse how these organizations used them in three UK gambling industry-funded youth education programmes. Evidential strategies adopted previously by other HHI are prominent in the programmes' practitioner-facing materials, evaluation design and reporting and in public s

Fostering learning among the next generation of veterinarians: incorporating one health and antimicrobial stewardship into veterinary medicine training curricula in Ethiopia.

Universities play a crucial role in educating and training veterinarians, and their fostering of learning among the next generation of students is widely regarded as key to bringing about the cultural change required to realise a transition towards a 'One Health' approach to managing human, animal, and environmental health and underpin widespread adoption of antimicrobial stewardship practices. In Africa, there is a paucity of studies that have explored how veterinary training curricula are influencing veterinary medicine students' perceptions of 'One Health' and the importance of antimicrobia

STD and HIV testing behaviors among black and Puerto Rican young adults.

CONTEXT: Given the high rates of infection among urban young adults, STD and HIV testing promotion is a public health priority. To inform future testing efforts, lifetime and recent testing behaviors of this population within casual and serious relationships should be better understood. METHODS: Data from a 2007-2008 study conducted in select neighborhoods in Hartford and Philadelphia were used to examine self-reported STD and HIV testing behaviors and attitudes among 483 sexually active black and Puerto Rican young adults aged 18-25. Multivariate ordered logit regression analyses were conduc

Evidence-Based Intrapartum Care: A Retrospective Descriptive Assessment of Facility-Based Births in Rural Public Health Facilities in Midwestern Uganda.

Introduction Efforts to reduce maternal and newborn deaths, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, have not been sufficient to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 for 2030. The quality of care around childbirth is critical for both mothers and newborns, and the use of evidence-based practices (EBPs) is vital in ensuring optimal outcomes. However, there is a paucity of recent research on the use of evidence-based practices in childbirth health facilities. Aims This study aimed to describe the use of intrapartum evidence-based practices for facility-based births in rural lower public health

Status report -- Identifying equity-focussed interventions to promote healthy weights.

INTRODUCTION: We developed screening criteria to identify population health interventions with an equity focus for inclusion on the Public Health Agency of Canada's Canadian Best Practices Portal. We applied them to the area of "healthy weights," specifically, obesity prevention. METHODS: We conducted a review of the literature and obtained input from expert external reviewers on changes to midstream environments. Interventions had to identify outcomes for groups with an underlying social disadvantage. We included papers with a focus on equity and vulnerable populations, intervention and/or e

Building Graduate Capabilities Through a Course-Wide Public Health and Health Promotion ECHA AI Curriculum Framework.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming public health and health promotion (PHHP) practice, creating a need for graduates who can use AI ethically, critically and effectively. Although AI is increasingly being incorporated into higher education, the focus has been on individual units or assessment tasks, with limited guidance available for embedding AI capabilities across entire courses. This study responded to this gap by developing a curriculum framework for integrating AI capability across postgraduate PHHP programmes. METHODS: An iterative co-design approach was unde

Building an expert system: a systematic approach to developing an instrument for data extraction from the literature.

When building an expert system that will be acceptable to clinicians in their practice, it is imperative that the knowledge engineer identifies, defines, and describes a clinical problem precisely. This can be accomplished by eliciting private knowledge from expert clinicians or by analyzing public knowledge available in the scientific literature. This study describes a systematic method for examining public knowledge found in health care textbooks and practice guidelines surrounding the concept of oral feeding in premature infants in a neonatal intensive care unit. It includes the development
