Using a Master Narrative Framework to Examine Conversations About Race and Ethnicity.

OBJECTIVE: Systemic racism, reinforced by color-evasive ideology, shapes the ways that emerging adults process and discuss race/ethnicity. In this preregistered and mixed methods study, we used a master narrative framework to examine narratives about race/ethnicity among U.S. emerging adult friend-pairs. METHOD: Participants consisted of 107 friend-pairs (N = 214 total) who provided individually written racial/ethnic narratives and engaged in an unstructured conversation with each other in which race/ethnicity was brought up. RESULTS: Using quantitative methods, we found that meaning making …

Clinical and forensic pathways in the treatment and redress of racial trauma.

OBJECTIVE: Racial trauma, stemming from individual and systemic experiences of racism, has increasingly been recognized as a source of significant psychological and functional harm (Carter, 2007; Mosley et al., 2021). This article examines two frameworks for conceptualizing racial trauma: the diagnostic framework, which emphasizes cumulative trauma and Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5-consistent symptomatology, and the psychological injury framework, which focuses on proximal functional impairment and positions harm as an external consequence of race-based discrimination…

"Who Would Understand?" The Experience of Paediatric Stroke From the Perspective of Ethnically Minoritised Young Adults in the United Kingdom: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis.

Paediatric stroke can have enduring impacts that influence life trajectories, including young adulthood, a crucial transitory period for establishing independence. Impacts can be heightened for ethnically minoritised populations due to racism in healthcare and general society. This qualitative study aimed to explore ethnically minoritised young adults' experiences of paediatric stroke. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Reflexivity based on lived experience was embedded throughout the research process, supported through consul…

Intersectionality in psychotherapy: The experiences of an AfroLatinx queer immigrant.

Culturally responsive and racially conscious psychotherapeutic work requires that therapists recognize the ways clients are impacted by their multiple marginalized identities and by systems of oppression (e.g., racism, ethnocentrism, sexism, heterosexism, and nativism). Attending exclusively to clients' marginalized identities (i.e., weak intersectionality) may drive therapists to only focus on internal, subjective, and emotional experiences, hence, missing the opportunity to consider and address how multiple sociostructural dimensions (i.e., strong intersectionality) may be impacting the clie…

Impact of attitudes and beliefs regarding African American sexual behavior on STD prevention and control in African American communities: unintended consequences.

Compared to whites, blacks experience significant health disparities for sexually transmitted diseases, particularly in the rates of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. To develop more effective interventions to control and prevent STDs, public health practitioners should better understand and respond to factors that facilitate sexual risk-taking behaviors and impede access to STD health care and make use of factors that promote sexual health. Legacies of slavery, racism, and economic or class discrimination leave many blacks suspicious of interventions aimed at improving the welfare of their …

Finding the "community" in community-level HIV/AIDS interventions: formative research with young African American men who have sex with men.

Data from 76 qualitative interviews with 18- to 29-year-old African American men who have sex with men (MSM) in Chicago and Atlanta were examined to identify perceptions of "community" and components of a community-level HIV/AIDS intervention. Many men reported feeling marginal to African American and gay White communities because of perceived homophobia and racism. Those who reported feeling part of gay African American communities characterized communities in terms of settings, social structures, and functions, including social support, socialization, and mobility. Despite these positive fun…

Improving Cardiovascular Health Through the Consideration of Social Factors in Genetics and Genomics Research: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association.

Cardiovascular health (CVH) is affected by genetic, social, and genomic factors across the life course, yet little research has focused on the interrelationships among them. An extensive body of work has documented the impact of social determinants of health at both the structural and individual levels on CVH, highlighting pathways in which racism, housing, violence, and neighborhood environments adversely affect CVH and contribute to disparities in cardiovascular disease. Genetic factors have also been identified as contributors to risk for cardiovascular disease. Emerging evidence suggests t…

Centering Equity in the Nation's Weather, Water, and Climate Services.

Water, weather, and climate affect everyone. However, their impacts on various communities can be very different based on who has access to essential services and environmental knowledge. Structural discrimination, including racism and other forms of privileging and exclusion, affects people's lives and health, with ripples across all sectors of society. In the United States, the need to equitably provide weather, water, and climate services is uplifted by the Justice40 Initiative (Executive Order 14008), which mandates 40% of the benefits of certain federal climate and clean energy investment…

Pathologizing the Crisis: Psychiatry, Policing, and Racial Liberalism in the Long Community Mental Health Movement.

The community mental health movement has been generally regarded as a benevolent movement that replaced old notions of psychiatric racism with new ideas about the normality of race. Few studies, however, have explored the movement for its active support for new surveillance and policing strategies, particularly broken windows theory, a policing approach partly responsible for the expansion of prisons in the United States after the 1970s. Looking to racially liberal approaches to psychiatry in the 1960s and 1970s crafted by integrationist psychiatrist Louis Jolyon West and black nationalist psy…

"God Will Ease My Pain": Pain Self-Management Experiences of African American Adults.

Black/African Americans' experiences with pain self-management are often perceived as suboptimal and stressful because of cultural incongruence and racism encountered in interactions with the healthcare system. Although the number of qualitative and quantitative studies exploring Black/African American pain management experiences is slowly increasing, there has not been a systematic synthesis on this topic. Hence, the overarching aim of this review of the literature was to use a qualitative meta-ethnographic approach to synthesize knowledge on pain self-management and pain experiences among Bl…
