Mammalian X ray sensitive mutants: a tool for the elucidation of the cellular response to ionizing radiation.

The complexity of the cellular response to ionizing radiation is indicated by many complementation groups identified among mammalian cells sensitive to ionizing radiation. Genetic complementation analysis of these mutants has been based on cell fusion and complementation of cell killing by X ray, whereas complementation of RDS after gamma rays has led to false results among AT cell lines and could not also be used in rodent cells. Studies on the relationship between cell killing and RDS following gamma irradiation have indicated that (a) RDS is not responsible for cell killing and (b) DNA repl

Postnatal development of the rat CNS following in utero exposure to a low dose of ionizing radiation.

In utero exposure to ionizing radiation is of importance because of its potential health risks. The developing nervous system is particularly vulnerable and the consequences of exposure to low levels of radiation (< or = 1 Gy) are not well established. The developmental effects of maternal exposure to 50 cGy gamma-radiation on gestational days (GD) 9.5, 15, and 18 were investigated in Sprague Dawley rats. Rats exposed on GD-9.5 along with appropriate controls were killed at 4 h, 48 h, and 10 days post-irradiation while those irradiated on GD-15 and GD-18 were killed postnatally (PN) on days 7

The effects of ionizing radiation, microwaves, and ultrasound on the developing embryo: clinical interpretations and applications of the data.

The term "radiation" evokes emotional responses both from lay individuals and from professionals. Many spokespersons are unfamiliar with radiation biology or the quantitative nature of the risks. Frequently, microwave, ultrasound, and ionizing radiation risks are confused. Although it is impossible to prove no risk for any environmental hazard, it appears that exposure to microwave radiation below the maximal permissible levels present no measurable risk to the embryo. Ultrasound exposure from diagnostic ultrasonographic imaging equipment also is quite innocuous. It is true that continued surv

The ultrastructure of the lung after exposure to ionizing radiation as seen by transmission and scanning electron microscopy.

Male mice of the BALB/c strain were exposed at an age of 12-14 weeks, to different doses of X-rays, either to the entire thorax or to the right hemithorax. At various times after exposure mice were sacrificed and the lung was examined by transmission or scanning electron microscopy. Radiation symptoms following exposure to 15-20 Gy can be divided into three phases: Early, from a few hours to a few weeks after exposure, changes in capillary permeability and morphological alterations in all types of lung cells are prominent. At intermediate times, from a few weeks to about 7 months after exposur

Caspase-8 is a novel modulator of Homologous Recombination Repair in response to ionizing radiations in glioblastoma.

Caspase-8 is a cysteine protease historically regarded as anti-neoplastic protein, thanks to its role in apoptosis. However, Caspase-8 expression is retained or even enhanced in several tumors, including glioblastoma (GBM), where it plays pro-tumor functions. We previously reported that it is a negative prognostic factor and contributes to resistance against DNA damaging agents, such as ionizing radiations (IR) and Temozolomide, commonly used in standard GBM treatment. We therefore investigated whether Caspase-8 may sustain DNA repair pathways proficiency in GBM. Here we uncover a novel role o

Thyroid parameters variations in healthcare workers and students exposed to low-dose ionizing radiations.

Background. Ionizing Radiations (IR) are an important occupational risk factor for the potential damage that can cause to workers' health and for their presence in numerous professional settings. Health care workers (HCW) can be exposed to IR from various sources, in particular from x-rays using radiological equipment, and represent the largest group of workers occupationally at risk, despite increased regulation and protection which caused exposure to low dose radiations. The thyroid gland is one of the most sensitive organs to damage and an important target of IR, leading to functional and o

Ionized Radiation-Mediated Retinoid Oxidation in the Retina and Retinal Pigment Epithelium of the Murine Eye.

The present study evaluated the effects of proton and gamma-ray ionizing radiation on the mouse eye. The aim of this work was to analyze radiation-mediated retinoid oxidation in the retina and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). The findings from this analysis can be used to develop a noninvasive method for rapid assessment of the effects of ionizing radiation. Comparative fluorescence and chromatographic analyses of retinoids before and after irradiations were performed. The fluorescent properties of chloroform extracts from irradiated mouse retina and RPE exhibited an increase in fluorescence

Effect of Ionizing Radiation on the Chemical Structure and the Physical Properties of Polycaprolactones of Different Molecular Weight.

Polymers used in the biomedical sector can be exposed to ionizing radiation (X-ray, gamma) in vivo as implants or ex vivo for sterilization purposes (gamma, electron beam). This ionizing radiation can, at certain levels, cause degradation of the polymer. Polycaprolactones (PCL) of different molecular weights were irradiated with electron beam and the changes in their chemical structure and physical properties with the dose were evaluated. Electron beam irradiation produced crosslinking and chain scission in the PCL chain without significant predominance of one mechanism over the other. Minimum
