Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is the most common and severe muscle disorder in children, primarily affecting boys, with an incidence of 1 among 5000. This X-linked recessive disease is marked by progressive muscle wasting, leading to loss of ambulation, respiratory impairment, and cardiomyopathy, with symptoms appearing between ages 2 and 5. While advances in care have extended the life expectancy of DMD patients to 30-40 years, cardiac and respiratory failure often leads to mortality by age 40. DMD is caused by mutations in the DMD gene, encoding the dystrophin protein, essential for musc

Concurrent chemoradiotherapy followed by immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) consolidation is now the standard of care for unresectable stage III non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and is increasingly applied to other thoracic malignancies. Although survival outcomes have improved, concerns about cardiac toxicity have emerged, as both chemoradiotherapy and ICIs are independently cardiotoxic and their combined effects remain unclear. This scoping review first examines chemoradiotherapy-associated and ICI-associated cardiac toxicity separately, and then evaluates their convergence in combined chem

BACKGROUND: The efficacy of cervical cancer screening programs is dependent on the participation rate. To increase participation among women not attending cervical cancer screening, self-collected samples for detection of high-risk human papillomavirus (hr-HPV) may be an option. The aims of this study were: to investigate the response rate to sending a self-collected vaginal sample for hr-HPV mRNA detection to long-term non-attendees; the compliance with follow-up among women positive for HPV in the self-sample; the prevalence of cervical dysplasia (high grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (H

BACKGROUND: Radiation stimulates the secretion of tumor stroma and induces resistance, recurrence, and metastasis of stromal-vascular tumors during radiotherapy. The proliferation and activation of tumor-associated fibroblasts (TAFs) are important reasons for the production of tumor stroma. Telmisartan (Tel) can inhibit the proliferation and activation of TAFs (resting TAFs), which may promote radiosensitization. However, Tel has a poor water solubility.
METHODS: In this study, self-assembled telmisartan nanoparticles (Tel NPs) were prepared by aqueous solvent diffusion method to solve the in

The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of fludarabine, a signal transducer and activator of transcription-1 (STAT1) inhibitor, on the radiosensitivity of B-cell lymphoma (BCL) and to explore the underlying mechanisms. Radiotherapy is one of the primary treatments for BCL, and STAT1 plays a critical role in the transcription of cell proliferation-related genes, which are associated with radiotherapy and ferroptosis. This study aims to determine whether fludarabine can enhance the radiosensitivity of BCL and to elucidate the molecular pathways involved. Various in vitro methodo

Although radioadaptive responses (RAR) and radiation-induced bystander effects (RIBE) are two important biological effects of low-dose radiation, there are currently only limited data that directly address their interaction, particularly in the context of whole organisms. In previous studies, we separately demonstrated RAR and RIBE using an in vivo system of C. elegans . In the current study, we further investigated their interaction in C. elegans , with the ratio of protruding vulva as the biological end point for RAR. Fourteen-hour-old worms were first locally targeted with a proton microbea

Immunodeficiency is a severe side effect of radiation therapy, notably at high radiation doses. It may also impact healthy individuals exposed to environmental ionizing radiation. Although it is believed to result from cytotoxicity of bone marrow cells and of immunocompetent cells in the peripheral blood, the response of distinct bone marrow and blood cell subpopulations following exposure to ionizing radiation is not yet fully explored. In this review, we aim to compile the knowledge on radiation sensitivity of immunocompetent cells and to summarize data from bone marrow and peripheral blood

The aim of this preliminary investigation was to assess whether human peripheral blood lymphocytes which have been pre-exposed to non-ionizing radiofrequency fields exhibit an adaptive response (AR) by resisting the induction of genetic damage from subsequent exposure to ionizing radiation. Peripheral blood lymphocytes from four healthy donors were stimulated with phytohemagglutinin for 24 h and then exposed for 20 h to 1950 MHz radiofrequency fields (RF, adaptive dose, AD) at an average specific absorption rate of 0.3 W/kg. At 48 h, the cells were subjected to a challenge dose (CD) of 1.0 or

We report an unusual case of a primary osteosarcoma of the lung in an asymptomatic 77-year-old male, who underwent lobectomy with complete resection of the lung lesion. His pattern of relapse was to multiple lymph nodes. The first relapse was 11 weeks after lobectomy in subcarinal lymph nodes, confirmed on needle aspiration to be consistent with sarcoma. Given his excellent performance status, this was treated with radical radiotherapy to 70 Gy in 35 fractions with good control. He relapsed to other lymph node regions. A biopsy of the external iliac lymph node was done and revealed osteoid pro

Reporting and scoring complications after radiotherapy of gynaecological cancers is difficult because of the variety of treatment techniques involved. Use of an international classification is necessary to compare results obtained in series of patients treated in different institutions. An international group of experts designed in the early nineties the so-called French-Italian glossary. This classification of late effects is now completed with the new LENT SOMA scales. This paper contains details of these late changes, including their pathophysiology, clinical syndromes, potential treatment,

Cells derived from individuals with ataxia-telangiectasia (AT) are more sensitive to ionizing radiation and radiomimetic drugs, as evidenced by decreased survival and increased chromosome aberrations at mitosis when compared with normal cell lines. Our previous studies showed that, despite similar initial levels of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs), AT cells express higher initial chromosome damage than do normal cells as demonstrated by the technique of premature chromosome condensation. However, this finding accounted for only a portion of the increased sensitivity (T. K. Pandita and W. N. Hit

The chromosomal localization of the gene which complements radiation hypersensitivity of AT cells was studied by microcell-mediated chromosome transfer. A 6-thioguanine-resistant derivative of an immortalized AT cell line, AT2KYSVTG, was used as a recipient for microcell-mediated chromosome transfer from 4 strains of mouse A9 cells, 3 of which carried a human X/11 recombinant chromosome containing various regions of chromosome 11, while the other carried an intact X chromosome. HAT-resistant microcell hybrids were isolated and examined for their radiosensitivity and chromosome constitution. Th

INTRODUCTION: High-grade gliomas (HGGs) are the most common primary malignant brain neoplasms in adults, with a high rate of local relapse in the first two years after primary treatment, resulting in poor prognosis. The aim of this study is to describe the potential benefits of the implementation of gyroscopic radiosurgery (GRS) in combination with modulated electro-hyperthermia (mEHT) as a radiosensitizer for the reirradiation of large or multifocal recurrent HGGs.
METHODS: A study was designed to evaluate the impact of survival and clinical tolerance. Clinical information of 15 patients tre

INTRODUCTION: Vascularized composite allotransplantation (VCA) is the transplantation of multiple tissue types as a solution for devastating injuries. Despite the highly encouraging functional outcomes of VCA, the consequences of long-term immunosuppression remain the main obstacle in its application. In this review, we provide researchers and surgeons with a summary of the latest advances in the field of cell-based therapies for VCA tolerance.
METHODS: Four electronic databases were searched: PubMed, Scopus, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature , and Web of Science. We us

PURPOSE: (64)Cu-diacetyl-bis (N (4)-methylthiosemicarbazone) ((64)Cu-ATSM) is a promising theranostic agent that targets hypoxic regions in tumors related to malignant characteristics. Its diagnostic usefulness has been recognized in clinical studies. Internal radiotherapy (IRT) with (64)Cu-ATSM is reportedly effective in preclinical studies; however, for clinical applications, improvements to reduce radiation exposure in non-target organs, particularly the liver, are required. We developed a strategy to reduce radiation doses to critical organs while preserving tumor radiation doses by contro

BACKGROUND: Abiotic stresses are a major limitation to the efficacy of entomopathogenic fungi in natural ecosystems and in biocontrol applications, yet the mechanisms that confer stress tolerance in Metarhizium anisopliae remain poorly understood. Non-ribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPSs) are key enzymes involved in fungal secondary metabolism and stress responses.
RESULTS: We examined the function of the non-ribosomal peptide synthetase condensation domain in M. anisopliae (MaNRPS_C) by constructing a deletion mutant (ΔMaNRPS_C), an overexpression strain (OE), and compared them with the wild

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the fetal immune tolerance induction could replace the HLA typing for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
METHODS: Immune tolerance of SD rats was induced by injecting host Wistar rats peripheral blood mononuclear cells into yolk sac of the embryo, afterward the mature male offsprings were used as donor. The host female recipients received lethal dose irradiation and bone marrow transplantation(BMT). The Wistar rats transplanted with bone marrow from donor and unrelated SD rats as well as the rats which received radiation alone were used as control. The

The plant Halimione portulacoides, an abundant species widely distributed in temperate salt-marshes, has been previously assessed as bioindicator and biomonitor of mercury contamination in these ecosystems. The present study aims to assess uptake and distribution of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MMHg) within H. portulacoides, potential mercury release by volatilization through leaves, and toxicity and tolerance mechanisms by investigating plant photochemical responses. Stem cuttings of H. portulacoides were collected from a salt-marsh within the Tagus estuary natural protected area, a
