The authors have studied the value of preoperative radiotherapy in 125 patients with cancer of the rectum. The patients were divided into two groups, control (no irradiation) and experimental (irradiation), and according to Dukes' pathological stage. The crude survival indicated no difference between the two groups, but analysis by stage and group demonstrated that for patients with a Dukes' stage C lesion, 500 rads of cobalt-60 gamma irradiation a few hours before excision of the lesion approximately doubles the probability of survival at 5 years. The prospect of surgical cure is three times

The new WHO-classification of the tumours of the digestive System replaces the "blue books", and are now dealt with completely in a single book. In addition to the histological features of the lesions, the new classification also contains information on epidemiology, aetiology, endoscopy, genetic susceptibility, molecular genetics, prognosis and predictive factors. The erstwhile mostly black-and-white histological photographs have at last again been replaced by numerous colour photographs and supplemented by endoscopic and macroscopic pictures. The changes to the individual tumour classificati

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of colorectal cancer in young adults is on an increasing trend. It is observed that this subgroup of patients has an aggressive disease and carries a poorer prognosis compared to its older counterpart. This study aimed to analyze the incidence, treatment outcome, and prognostic factors in adolescents and young adults with rectal cancer attending a tertiary cancer center in North India.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 50 patients of histologically proven rectal cancer, aged up to 30 years, treated at our center between 2015 and 2019. The clinical,

The most serious early complication after rectal resection with low anastomosis is anastomotic leakage (AL). AL may compromise the long-term conservation of the anastomosis and also worsen oncological results. The aim of this review was to identify those factors that contribute to the prevention of AL and to delineate the various treatment options (endoscopic, perineal surgical approach, abdominal surgical approach) for chronic AL or anastomotic stricture. Treatments for AL or anastomotic stricture should be protected by proximal diversion of fecal flow, ideally by a diverting stoma created at

A 56- year-old man underwent a laparoscopic low anterior resection for rectal cancer (cT3bN0M0). Postoperatively, he was fairly well and started oral intake on postoperative day (POD) 9. On POD 14, he had an uncomfortable feeling during urination and noticed pneumaturia, and urinalysis revealed hematopyuria. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) showed air collection in the left seminal vesicle and bladder, and colonoscopy demonstrated a fistula at the anastomotic site. Abdominal CT following the fistulography under colonoscopy demonstrated fistulous communication between the rectum and left semi

A 78-year-old man with a 10-year history of ischiorectal abscess was referred to our hospital because purulent drainage from an external opening changed to mucoid drainage. By the brushing cytology of fistula ano, mucinous adenocarcinoma was found. T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) indicated that a mucinous adenocarcinoma was localized within the abscess and the fistula, and was not invasive neoplasm. He underwent a sphincter-sparing local excision of the ischiorectal abscess including the fistula and openings. The pathological findings indicated that mucinous adenocarcinoma arose f

There are no reports regarding perforation of the colorectum induced by anorectal manometry. We report two cases of colorectal perforation that occurred during manometry in the patients undergoing restorative proctectomy for distal rectal cancer. In the first patient, computed tomography showed an extraperitoneal perforation in the pelvic cavity and a rupture of the rectal wall. A localized perforation into the retroperitoneum was managed conservatively. In the second patient, a 3 cm linear colon rupture was detected above the anastomotic site. A primary closure of the perforated colon and pro

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer during pregnancy is uncommon. Most patients present in late pregnancy, and the tumor is localized to rectum in up to 85% of cases. Delayed diagnosis due to confusing significant lower gastrointestinal symptoms with pregnancy-associated gastrointestinal changes is a common feature. From the increasing intraabdominal pressure during delivery, a tumor can prolapse throu the anus and develop incarceration and strangulation, but that is seen a extremely rarely,
CASE: A 33-year-old woman was found to have a prolapsing rectal cancer through the anus during delivery, and

We report the case of a 58-year-old woman who had a 7-year history of multiple myeloma and multiple rib fractures and who presented with dysphagia. She underwent thorough gastrointestinal evaluation to rule out the possibility of amyloidosis. Although upper gastrointestinal biopsies were negative, the rectal biopsy was characterized by extensive smudgy eosinophilic deposits in the submucosa that closely resembled amyloid, except that they were not congophilic. Fibers with serrated borders characteristic of those in elastofibroma were identified and confirmed by means of elastic stain and elect

A case of mucosal prolapse syndrome in the rectum is reported. A 61-year-old female presented complaining of bloody discharge and constipation for 2 months. Colonoscopy revealed an elevated lesion on the left anterior wall of the rectal canal. Biopsy showed glandular proliferation and fibromuscular obliteration of the lamina propria, findings characteristic of mucosal prolapse syndrome. It is a rare disorder affecting the rectum because the lesion looks macroscopically like a protruding adenoma.

Two neonates with intestinal obstruction and two children (aged 1 and 4 years) with severe constipation since birth are reported in whom stenosis of the distal rectum was found. In association with the rectal anomaly, three of them had a presacral tumour (teratoma in two, hamartoma in one) and all had a deformed sacrum. An embryological hypothesis to explain this association has been postulated by Currarino, after whom this triad has been named. Two patients were related (father and daughter). The role of hereditary factors in the occurrence of the syndrome has been reported before. Operative

This paper deals with the clinical features, diagnosis and treatment of acute and delayed forms of radiation injury of the rectum. A series of thirty-seven patients with this condition is reported and the current literature is reviewed. Although there have been no major advances in the treatment of this problem, an improvement in results of operative procedures can be expected with a better understanding of the pathology, the use of parenteral nutrition, and the introduction of several new techniques of bowel anastomosis. Aspects of prevention are also discussed.
