MSCI: A multistate dataset for colposcopy image classification of cervical cancer screening.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is the second most common female cancer globally, and it is vital to detect cervical cancer with low cost at an early stage using automated screening methods of high accuracy, especially in areas with insufficient medical resources. Automatic detection of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) can effectively prevent cervical cancer. OBJECTIVES: Due to the deficiency of standard and accessible colposcopy image datasets, we present a dataset containing 4753 colposcopy images acquired from 679 patients in three states (acetic acid reaction, green filter, and iodine

Congestive Heart Failure Detection Via Short-Time Electrocardiographic Monitoring For Fast Reference Advice In Urgent Medical Conditions.

This study proposed a detection approach for the congestive heart failure (CHF) by short-time electrocardiographic monitoring. Recent literature only reported that RR intervals and Heart Rate Variability (HRV) indicated key hidden information to discriminate CHF groups from healthy controls. However whether it was possible to find certain short-time electrocardiographic monitoring duration for CHF clinical diagnoses, has not been well addressed. In the study, databases of 54 normal subjects and 15 CHF patients from PhysioNet were introduced. Signals were classified into variable assessment len

Aberrant default-mode network-hippocampus connectivity after sad memory-recall in remitted-depression.

Rumination and cognitive reactivity (dysfunctional cognitions after sad mood-induction) remain high in remitted Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and can contribute to new episodes. These factors have been linked to increased fMRI resting-state functional-connectivity within the Default-Mode Network (DMN). It remains unclear whether (I) increased DMN-connectivity persists during MDD-remission, and (II) whether sad mood-induction differentially affects DMN-connectivity in remitted-MDD vs controls. Moreover, DMN-connectivity studies in remitted-MDD were previously confounded by antidepressant-use.

Sequential resolution of fragmented visual percepts: experimental investigation of a subject's perceptual experience after a right medial temporal stroke.

This report concerns the fragmented visual percepts in a woman, TR, following a right entorhinal-perirhinal infarct. In a previous report, Weddell [Weddell, R. A. (2005). A visual disorder producing highly selective deletion of recurring letters. Cortex, 41, 471-485] linked TR's highly selective tendency to delete recurrent letters with her fragmented percepts. The conflation of same-identity form elements was attributed to anterior extrastriate damage, which reduced the amount of information sustainable in fully resolved visual percepts, and the present experimental investigation of her subje

Decoding the Role of H19 in Cholestatic Liver Injury Using snRNA-seq, Spatial Transcriptomics, and Machine Learning-Based Disease Prediction.

BACKGROUND: Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic obstructive biliary disease and remains a high-burden cholestatic liver disease with no approved therapies and a substantial recurrence rate following liver transplantation. The long non-coding RNA H19 (H19) has emerged as a potential driver of PSC progression, yet its cell-type-specific and spatially resolved mechanisms remain poorly defined. RESULTS: Age- and sex-matched wild type (WT), H19 knockout (H19KO), Mdr2 knockout (Mdr2KO), and double-knockout (DKO; Mdr2KO/H19KO) mice were used. The liver tissues were analyzed using singl

Improving Long-Term Adherence to Endocrine Therapy Among Breast Cancer Survivors: Development of a Multiscale Modeling and Intervention System.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is a significant public health burden. Despite its critical role in preventing the recurrence of breast cancer, rates of long-term adherence to endocrine therapy (ET) remain low among certain breast cancer survivors. Using embedded sensors in smartphones and wearables, ecological momentary assessment data and health behavior theory may facilitate a richer understanding of the real-world context of medication-taking behaviors, which can aid in the development of personalized interventions. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this paper is to describe the development of a mult

Development and validation of prediction models for papillary thyroid cancer structural recurrence using machine learning approaches.

BACKGROUND: Although papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) patients are known to have an excellent prognosis, up to 30% of patients experience disease recurrence after initial treatment. Accurately predicting disease prognosis remains a challenge given that the predictive value of several predictors remains controversial. Thus, we investigated whether machine learning (ML) approaches based on comprehensive predictors can predict the risk of structural recurrence for PTC patients. METHODS: A total of 2244 patients treated with thyroid surgery and radioiodine were included. Twenty-nine perioperative v

Artificial intelligence and predictive tools in non-muscle invasive bladder cancer: a narrative review of current insights and advances.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) is characterized by high recurrence rates and heterogeneous progression risk, making accurate diagnosis, risk stratification, and personalized management challenging. Conventional clinical scoring systems provide general guidance but often fail to fully capture tumor complexity and interpatient variability. This review summarizes current applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in NMIBC, focusing on diagnosis, prognostic, and clinical decision-making. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, Go

Beyond depression symptoms: the default mode network as a predictor of antidepressant response.

Antidepressant efficacy for major depressive disorder (MDD) remains limited, with the neural mechanisms underlying treatment response poorly understood. The default mode network (DMN), particularly the connectivity between the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), has been implicated in MDD pathophysiology and may be linked to treatment outcomes. However, its potential as a biomarker for antidepressant response has not been validated. Here, we investigate the relationship between DMN connectivity and antidepressant treatment response in MDD. Resting-state fMRI d

Predicting early stage lung cancer recurrence and survival from combined tumor motion amplitude and radiomics on free-breathing 4D-CT.

BACKGROUND: Cancer control outcomes of lung cancer are hypothesized to be affected by several confounding factors, including tumor heterogeneity and patient history, which have been hypothesized to mitigate the dose delivery effectiveness when treated with radiation therapy. Providing an accurate predictive model to identify patients at risk would enable tailored follow-up strategies during treatment. PURPOSE: Our goal is to demonstrate the added prognostic value of including tumor displacement amplitude in a predictive model that combines clinical features and computed tomography (CT) radiom

A deep learning framework to stratify Nottingham histologic grade 2 breast tumors based on dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI.

OBJECTIVE: The Nottingham Histologic Grade (NHG) informs prognosis and treatment decisions in breast cancer, but NHG2 tumors are biologically heterogeneous, leading to both under- and over-treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clinical and imaging data from the Duke-Breast-Cancer-MRI (n = 877) and advanced-MRI-breast-lesions (n = 37) datasets were used to develop DeepRadGrade (DRG), a convolutional neural network model trained to differentiate NHG1 from NHG3 tumors on dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI. The model then classified 456 NHG2 tumors into DRG2- (NHG1-like) and DRG2+ (NHG3-like) subgro

Identifying Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries Through Automated Video Analysis of In-Game Motion Patterns.

BACKGROUND: Failure to diagnose anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during a game can delay adequate treatment and increase the risk of further injuries. Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to be an accurate, cost-efficient, and readily available diagnostic tool for ACL injury in in-game situations. PURPOSE: To develop an automated video analysis system that uses AI to identify biomechanical patterns associated with ACL injury and to evaluate whether the system can enhance the ability of orthopaedic and sports medicine specialists to identify ACL injuries on video. Deep Learning-Based Metal Artifact Reduction in Cardiac Computed Tomography: A Preliminary Study Enabling Radiomic Analysis in Patients with Implantable Defibrillators.

Idiopathic ventricular fibrillation (IVF) affects 5-10% of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survivors, requiring implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) for management. However, metal artifacts from ICDs may compromise cardiac computed tomography (CCT) image quality, limiting diagnostic capabilities and preventing advanced analyses like radiomics. The aim of this study is to develop a deep learning (DL)-based solution to reduce metal-induced artifacts by effectively removing both the metallic implant (primary artifact) and the associated streak artifacts (secondary artifact) in CCT scans

Limits of optimal decoding under synaptic coarse-tuning.

Sensory information propagates through successive processing stages in the brain, where synaptic weight patterns between stations determine how downstream neurons decode information from upstream populations. Although optimized synaptic connectivity can enhance information transmission, it requires precise weight tuning. Recent evidence depicting substantial synaptic volatility raises two fundamental questions: How does coarse-tuning of synaptic connectivity affect information transmission? What strategies could the nervous system employ to maintain reliable communication despite synaptic fluc

Spatial goals trap hippocampal replay.

Hippocampal replay is proposed to support memory and planning by preferentially reactivating behaviorally significant locations 1,2 . Although learning can alter which locations are reactivated and how frequently 3-7 , whether it also alters the dynamics by which replay propagates through the cognitive map remains unknown. To address this, we recorded large-scale CA1 activity while rats collected identical rewards at multiple spatial locations, only one of which was consistently rewarded and served as the Goal. Replay events occurred nearly twice as often during reward consumption at the Goal

Clinicogenomic Insights for Progression-Free Survival in Prostate Cancer.

Prostate cancer (PrCa), the second most common cancer diagnosed in men globally, remains a critical challenge in precision oncology. While PrCa can be deadly, it is highly treatable if detected early. Identifying associative factors influencing disease progression risks can help inform preliminary steps that will further the expedition of clinical therapeutic intervention decisions, which will improve treatment outcomes. While conventional PrCa progression assessment tools rely heavily on a few clinical parameters, the importance of genomic information is increasingly recognized. In this study

Flexible Sensor Array Based on Polythiophene/Cu-MOF-Derived CuO and Polyaniline/MXene Composites for Room-Temperature Detection of Hydrogen Sulfide and Ammonia.

Real-time detection of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and ammonia (NH3) is important for occupational safety in humid, mixed-gas environments, yet conventional chemiresistive sensors remain limited by cross-sensitivity, humidity dependence, and poor portability at room temperature. Here, we report a flexible dual-channel sensor array coupled with a gated recurrent unit-convolutional neural network (GRU-CNN). A polythiophene/Cu-MOF-derived CuO composite (PTh/CuO) targets H2S through sulfur-affinitive CuO surface sites, whereas a polyaniline/Ti3C2Tx MXene composite (PANI/MXene) targets NH3 through PANI

A Review of the Integration of Artificial Intelligence in Cardiac Electrophysiology.

Cardiac electrophysiology (EP) is inherently data-centric, spanning brief 12-lead electrocardiograms (ECGs), high-density electroanatomic maps, and continuous device-based monitoring. This data volume can strain provider workflows while creating an opportunity for artificial intelligence (AI). Machine learning (ML) and its deep learning subfield extract clinically actionable patterns from complex electrical signals. This narrative review summarizes contemporary AI applications across the major domains of EP. In arrhythmia detection, deep neural networks classify rhythms at a level comparable t

Perineural invasion and the "cold" tumor microenvironment in pancreatic cancer: mechanisms of crosstalk and therapeutic opportunities.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) remains a devastating malignancy characterized by profound lethality, aggressive local invasion, dismal prognosis, and significant resistance to existing therapies. Two critical biological features underpin the challenges in treating PDAC: extensive perineural invasion (PNI), the process by which cancer cells infiltrate and migrate along nerves, and a profoundly immunosuppressive, or "cold," tumor microenvironment (TME). PNI is not only a primary route for local tumor dissemination and recurrence but also a major contributor to the severe pain often expe

Divide and Conquer: Automatic Detection of the Thalamus to Empower DBS Physiological Navigation to the Subthalamic Region.

Our aim was to identify thalamic electrophysiological activity along the trajectory to the subthalamic region using micro-electrode recordings in deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery by integrating site- and sequence-based approaches, without compromising subthalamic nucleus (STN) detection accuracy. We used electrophysiological data from 29,735 recording sites across 112 patients to develop algorithms for automatic detection of the thalamus, STN, and non-cellular brain areas. We combined site-specific features with sequence-based information using two approaches: classical machine learning us
