Risk factors for the incidence of delirium in cerebrovascular patients in a Neurosurgery Intensive Care Unit: A prospective study.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore the incidence of delirium in cerebrovascular patients admitted in our Neurosurgery Intensive Care Unit and analyse the risk factors leading to delirium. BACKGROUND: Delirium is one of the most common mental disorders in general hospitals, but the incidence of different kinds of diseases and studies varies. Cerebrovascular patients in our Neurosurgery Intensive Care Unit are high-risk groups for delirium; identifying risk factors for delirium and taking early interventions are crucial for patient prognosis. DESIGN: A prospective study. METHODS: A convenience s

Comparisons of sexual assault among older and younger women.

This study examined the nature and extent of coercion, violence, and physical injury among older victims of sexual assaults (55 years and older) and compared these with the sexual assault victims of mid-age (31-54 years) and younger women (15-30 years). The results of this investigation reveal that older victims of sexual assault are more likely to be living alone at the time of the attack. In addition, older victims of sexual assault tended to report higher rates of vulnerabilities such as psychiatric and cognitive disabilities than did younger female victims. In contrast to younger victims,

Evaluation of the ventilatory effects of the prone maximum restraint (PMR) position on obese human subjects.

UNLABELLED: The study sought to determine the physiologic effects of the prone maximum restraint (PMR) position in obese subjects after intense exercise. We designed an experimental, randomized, cross-over trial in human subjects conducted at a university exercise physiology laboratory. Ten otherwise healthy, obese (BMI>30) subjects performed a period of heavy exertion on a cycling ergometer to 85% of maximum heart rate, and then were placed in one of three positions in random order for 15min: (1) seated with hands behind the back, (2) prone with arms to the sides, (3) PMR position. While in e

Spatial transcriptomics reveals D2-associated synaptic transcriptional attenuation in the chronically stressed dorsal striatum.

Chronic stress alters striatal functions involved in motivation, action selection, and behavioral adaptation, yet cell-type-associated transcriptional organization in the dorsal striatum remains unclear. We used RNAscope-guided GeoMx spatial transcriptomics to compare D1 and D2 neuronal compartments in matched dorsal striatal regions after chronic restraint stress (CRS). CRS engaged both populations, producing CRS-responsive gene sets in both D1- and D2-enriched compartments. Gene set enrichment analysis revealed partially overlapping CRS-associated pathway attenuation in both compartments, in

Acute restraint stress and epinephrine administration disrupt cognitive and emotional functions in male rats via modulation of proinflammatory cytokines, MCT-2, and neurogranin.

Stress triggers neuroendocrine and physiological changes, often resulting in cognitive impairments and heightened anxiety. This study aims to investigate the effects of acute stress and epinephrine administration on learning, memory, and anxiety-like behavior, as well as their impact on proinflammatory cytokines, neurogranin expression, and brain energy metabolism. In this study, three experimental groups were established, each comprising eight rats: control, acute stress, and acute stress combined with epinephrine. The acute stress model consisted of 60 min of restraint stress. Epinephrine wa

Acute stress causes sex-specific changes to ventral subiculum synapses, circuitry, and anxiety-like behavior.

Experiencing a single severe stressor is sufficient to drive sexually dimorphic psychiatric disease development. The ventral subiculum (vSUB) emerges as a site where stress may induce sexually dimorphic adaptations due to its sex-specific organization and pivotal role in stress integration. Using a 1 h acute restraint stress model in mice, we uncover that stress causes a net decrease in vSUB activity in females driven by adrenergic receptor signaling. By contrast, males exhibit a net increase in vSUB activity that is driven by corticosterone signaling. We further identified sexually dimorphic

Pathological changes in the spleen of mice subjected to different time courses of restraint stress.

The objective of this study was to investigate spleen pathology and immune cell subset alterations in mice exposed to acute and chronic restraint stress over various timeframes. A deeper understanding of stress-induced spleen injuries can provide new insights into the mechanisms underlying stress-induced disorders. C57BL/6N mice were restrained for different durations (1, 3, 7, 14 and 21 days) for 6-8 h daily. The control mice were observed at the same time points. Post restraint, behavioural experiments were conducted to assess spleen weight, gross morphology and microscopic histological chan

The effect of chronic stress on the immunogenicity and immunoprotection of the M6-TT vaccine in female mice.

Active vaccination is an effective therapeutic option to reduce the reinforcing effects of opioids. Several studies showed that chronic stress affects the immune system decreasing the efficiency of some vaccines. Heroin withdrawal is a stressor and it is a stage in which the patient who abuses heroin is vulnerable to stress affects the immune response and consequently its immunoprotective capacity, then, the objective was to determine the effect of heroin-withdrawal and heroin-withdrawal plus immobilization, on the immune (immunogenicity) and protective response (behavioral response) of morphi

Ketamine and selective activation of parvalbumin interneurons inhibit stress-induced dendritic spine elimination.

Stress is a major risk factor for the onset of many psychiatric diseases. In rodent models, chronic stress induces depression and impairs excitatory neurotransmission. However, little is known about the effect of stress on synaptic circuitry during the development of behavioral symptoms. Using two-photon transcranial imaging, we studied the effect of repeated restraint stress on dendritic spine plasticity in the frontal cortex in vivo. We found that restraint stress induced dendritic spine loss by decreasing the rate of spine formation and increasing the rate of spine elimination. The N-methyl

Restraint stress increases prolactin-mediated phosphorylation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 5 in the hypothalamus and adrenal cortex in the male mouse.

Prolactin is a pleiotropic peptide hormone produced by the lactotrophs in the anterior pituitary. Its rate of secretion is primarily regulated by a negative-feedback mechanism where prolactin stimulates the activity of the tuberoinfundibular dopaminergic (TIDA) neurones, increasing their release of dopamine, which accesses the pituitary via the median eminence to suppress further prolactin secretion. In addition to its well established role in lactation, circulating prolactin is secreted in response to stress, although the mechanism by which this is achieved or its cellular targets remains unk

Effect of prenatal restraint stress and morphine co-administration on plasma vasopressin concentration and anxiety behaviors in adult rat offspring.

Stressful events and exposure to opiates during gestation have important effects on the later mental health of the offspring. Anxiety is among the most common mental disorders. The present study aimed to identify effects of prenatal restraint stress and morphine co-administration on plasma vasopressin concentration (PVC) and anxiety behaviors in rats. Pregnant rats were divided into four groups (n = 6, each): saline, morphine, stress + saline and stress + morphine treatment. The stress procedure consisted of restraint twice per day, two hours per session, for three consecutive days starting on

Repetitive restraint stress changes spleen immune cell subsets through glucocorticoid receptor or β-adrenergic receptor in a stage dependent manner.

Immune system is sensitive to stress. Spleen is the largest peripheral immune organ innervated with sympathetic nerves and controlled by adrenomedullary system in the body. However, the alterations and mechanism of spleen immune cell subsets caused by repetitive restraint stress (RRS) is poorly understood. In this study, we found that RRS reduced spleen index in mice, and induced an expansion of white pulp and involution of the red pulp. Meanwhile, the percentage of CD3+CD8+ T lymphocytes, CD11b+F4/80+ macrophages, CD11b+Ly-6G-Ly-6Chi monocytic myeloid derived suppressor cells (mMDSCs) and CD1

Clinical parameters and adrenocortical activity to assess stress responses of alpacas using different methods of restraint either alone or with shearing.

Shearing of alpacas is stressful and is undertaken by restraint in the standing position, cast on the floor or on a tilt table. The objectives of the study were to evaluate and compare the stress responses between different methods. The study consisted of two parts. In part one, 15 animals were restrained applying all three methods but without shearing. In part two, 45 animals in three groups of 15 were shorn using one of the three procedures. Body temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, salivary cortisol and faecal cortisol metabolites (FCM) were measured. Part 1: restraint in a standing p

Psychological assessment of acute schizophrenia patients who experienced seclusion either alone or in combination with restraint.

Objective Numerous studies on the effects of seclusion and/or restraint in acute psychiatric treatment have reported both positive and negative effects. However, no studies to date have evaluated the effects of seclusion and/or restraint on schizophrenia patients using a rating scale. Thus, to examine the effects of seclusion and/or restraint on schizophrenia patients, we used the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale and assessed the psychological condition of patients. Methods Factor analysis was conducted to create subscales of Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale, and psychiatric changes were assessed

A new mechanism of vitamin C effects on A/FM/1/47(H1N1) virus-induced pneumonia in restraint-stressed mice.

It is well known that vitamin C could protect against influenza infection, but little is known about the mechanisms. This study aimed to investigate the influence and possible mechanisms of vitamin C on pneumonia induced by influenza virus in stressed mice. Results showed that restraint stress significantly increased the mortality and the severity of pneumonia in mice caused by A/FM/1/47(H1N1) virus infection, which was attenuated by oral administration of vitamin C (125 and 250 mg/kg). Moreover, vitamin C administration significantly decreased expression of susceptibility genes, including mit

A dopamine receptor d2-type agonist attenuates the ability of stress to alter sleep in mice.

Although sleep disruptions that accompany stress reduce quality of life and deteriorate health, the mechanisms through which stress alters sleep remain obscure. Psychological stress can alter sleep in a variety of ways, but it has been shown to be particularly influential on rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Prolactin (PRL), a sexually dimorphic, stress-sensitive hormone whose basal levels are higher in females, has somnogenic effects on REM sleep. In the current study, we examined the relationship between PRL secretion and REM sleep after restraint stress to determine whether: 1) the ability of

Dietary-induced binge eating increases prefrontal cortex neural activation to restraint stress and increases binge food consumption following chronic guanfacine.

Binge eating is a prominent feature of bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. Stress or perceived stress is an often-cited reason for binge eating. One notion is that the neural pathways that overlap with stress reactivity and feeding behavior are altered by recurrent binge eating. Using young adult female rats in a dietary-induced binge eating model (30 min access to binge food with or without 24-h calorie restriction, twice a week, for 6 weeks) we measured the neural activation by c-Fos immunoreactivity to the binge food (vegetable shortening mixed with 10% sucrose) in bingeing and non-b

Association of empathy of nursing staff with reduction of seclusion and restraint in psychiatric inpatient care.

OBJECTIVE: Disruptive behavior leading to seclusion or restraint increases with patients in a high-acuity stage of mental illness who have histories of aggressive behavior. The study examined whether greater nursing staff empathy skills and motivation reduced use of seclusion and restraint and whether empathy training can further this effect. METHODS: In 1,098 nursing shifts in 2 six-month periods one year apart, hierarchical analyses examined the effects of nursing shift and patient characteristics, the effect for each shift of nurses' skill and motivation to use empathy, and whether empathy
