UNILATERAL RETICULAR PSEUDODRUSEN: Clinical Features and Potential Protective Factors.

PURPOSE: To describe the demographic and clinical data of patients with rare unilateral reticular pseudodrusen (RPD) presentation and investigate features that may play a protective role against their formation. METHODS: This retrospective, multicenter case series included patients with unilateral RPD from multiple tertiary care centers. Demographic, longitudinal clinical, and multimodal imaging (MMI) data were collected and compared between the study eye showing the presence of RPD and the fellow eye. Central macular thickness, subfoveal choroidal thickness, and choroidal vascular index were

Vitelliform lesions and choroidal changes in chorioretinal disorders: pathophysiological insights and clinical implications.

This narrative review aims to explore the correlation between choroidal thickness (CT), broader choroidal changes, and the development and progression of vitelliform lesions, with a focus on their potential modulatory role-whether primary or secondary- through mechanisms involving choriocapillaris (CC) and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) dysfunction. CT was found to be significantly increased in various vitelliform maculopathies, including adult-onset foveomacular vitelliform dystrophy (AOFVD), Best disease, autosomal recessive bestrophinopathy, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and pac

Allelic and phenotypic heterogeneity in Junctophillin-3 related neurodevelopmental and movement disorders.

Junctophilin-3 belongs to a triprotein junctional complex implicated in the regulation of neuronal excitability and involved in the formation of junctional membrane structures between voltage-gated ion channels and endoplasmic (ryanodine) reticular receptors. A monoallelic trinucleotide repeat expansion located within the junctophilin-3 gene (JPH3) has been implicated in a rare autosomal dominant (AD) late-onset (and progressive) disorder clinically resembling Huntington disease (HD), and known as HD-like 2 (HDL2; MIM# 606438). Although the exact molecular mechanisms underlying HDL2 has not ye

Brain damage in sheep from penetrating captive bolt stunning.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the severity and distribution of structural changes in the brains of adult sheep stunned by penetrating captive bolt … ng respiratory arrest. CONCLUSIONS: After penetrating captive bolt stunning, damage to the central reticular formation, axonal connections, and the cortical mantle is the likely reason for failure of respiratory control and traumatic loss of consciousness.

Segmentation and the development of the vertebrate nervous system.

1. Recent experiments on the development of neural segmentation in chick embryos are reviewed. 2. Segmentation of the spinal peripheral nerves is governed by a subdivision of the somite-derived sclerotome into anterior and posterior halves. Migrating neural crest cells and outgrowing motor axons are confined to the anterior sclerotome as a result, in part, of inhibitory interactions with posterior sclerotome cells. 3. The sclerotomal distribution of certain molecules known to influence growing nerve cells in vitro, namely laminin, fibronectin, N-CAM, N-Cadherin and J1/tenascin/cytotactin, sugg

Light microscopic immunocytochemical localization of pyruvate dehydrogenase complex in rat brain: topographical distribution and relation to cholinergic and catecholaminergic nuclei.

Pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDHC; EC 1.2.4.1, EC 2.3.1.12 and EC 1.6.4.3) includes 3 catalytically active mitochondrial enzymes involved in the formation of cellular energy through the tricarboxylic acid cycle and in the synthesis of ACh. We sought to determine whether immunocytochemically detected PDHC was enriched in neurons of the rat CNS, and, if so, whether the perikarya containing higher levels of PDHC immunoreactivity were differentially distributed with respect to their size or location within nuclear groups containing ACh, catecholamines or other unidentified transmitters. A novel stromal cell source of RANKL during sustained osteoclast activation in disuse osteoporosis.

Prolonged physical inactivity causes mechanical unloading of the bone, leading to disuse osteoporosis. Although various cellular and molecular changes have been reported, the mechanisms underlying disuse osteoporosis remain incompletely understood. Using the spiral wire immobilization (SWI) model, we observed that hindlimb immobilization in mice caused trabecular bone loss within 14 days after SWI initiation. Time-course analysis revealed that trabecular bone loss progressed rapidly shortly after SWI initiation, with little progression at later time points. During the early phase of bone loss,

Influence of dental occlusion on oculomotory function-A pilot study.

The aim of this study was to examine the interaction between the oculomotory system and the stomatognathic system based on morphofunctional relationships between the corresponding cranial nerves, their core areas and the reticular formation as a "link" by means of optometric examinations. Test subjects (N = 100) were prospectively recruited and divided into two groups: a young-age (N = 53, age 6-16 years) and old-age group (N = 47, 23-78 years). We determined the horizontal range of convergence and divergence as well as the near convergence point. These optometrically measured parameters were …

Neural cell adhesion molecule Negr1 deficiency in mouse results in structural brain endophenotypes and behavioral deviations related to psychiatric disorders.

Neuronal growth regulator 1 (NEGR1) belongs to the immunoglobulin (IgLON) superfamily of cell adhesion molecules involved in cortical layering. Recent functional and genomic studies implicate the role of NEGR1 in a wide spectrum of psychiatric disorders, such as major depression, schizophrenia and autism. Here, we investigated the impact of Negr1 deficiency on brain morphology, neuronal properties and social behavior of mice. In situ hybridization shows Negr1 expression in the brain nuclei which are central modulators of cortical-subcortical connectivity such as the island of Calleja and the r

Integration of vestibular and emetic gastrointestinal signals that produce nausea and vomiting: potential contributions to motion sickness.

Vomiting and nausea can be elicited by a variety of stimuli, although there is considerable evidence that the same brainstem areas mediate these responses despite the triggering mechanism. A variety of experimental approaches showed that nucleus tractus solitarius, the dorsolateral reticular formation of the caudal medulla (lateral tegmental field), and the parabrachial nucleus play key roles in integrating signals that trigger nausea and vomiting. These brainstem areas presumably coordinate the contractions of the diaphragm and abdominal muscles that result in vomiting. However, it is unclear…

Lipodermatosclerosis and the significance of proteolytic remodeling in the pathogenesis of venous ulceration (Review).

The preceding stage of venous ulceration represents a scleroderma-like hardening of the skin called lipodermatosclerosis. Clinical stages such as lipodermatosclerosis and venous ulceration, which succeed one another are highly associated to chronic venous insufficiency. Lipodermatosclerosis is characterized by fibrous scar tissue of the reticular dermis built up of collagen bundles and loss of cellular components, whereas venous ulceration is characterized by total loss of epidermis and partially of matrix structures in the upper dermis. There is a growing recognition that an excessive proteol

Autonomic reaction to vestibular damage.

The vestibular system provides inputs to many neurons in the brain stem that participate in autonomic control. This multiplicity of vestibul … Even sleep disturbances might be connected with vestibular disorders because neurons in the pontine reticular formation that are critical in switching between sleep states may be influenced by labyrinthine inputs. Thus it is likely that vestibular damage will result in a number of parallel disturbances in autonomic function.

Physiological basis and pharmacology of motion sickness: an update.

Motion sickness can occur when sensory inputs regarding body position in space are contradictory or are different from those predicted from … inspiratory and expiratory respiratory muscles and is mediated by neurons in the lateral medullary reticular formation and perhaps by cells near the medullary midline. Cocontraction of the diaphragm and abdominal muscles increases pressure on the stomach, which causes gastric contents to be ejected through the mouth.
