In this article we have described the clinical and laboratory features of uncomplicated influenza in college students and its treatment with ribavirin aerosol. The disease presents as an acute febrile systemic illness of short duration that varies little from patient to patient. Peripheral blood cell changes in the infection are also quite specific and very consistent. Polymorphonuclear cell counts are slightly increased above normal early in infection at a time when lymphocyte counts were greatly reduced. The use of this procedure has been restricted due to concerns regarding exposure of patients to a lifelong risk of overwhelming infections. This paper reviews clinicopathological and hematological manifestations of sickle cell anemia as seen in Kenyan children in the first decade of life. The information is based on a study of 447 patients. The findings are similar to those that are well documented from America, West Africa, and other parts of Africa. However, local variations and complications such as malnutrition and topical infections that may affect prognosis are high-lighted.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of partial splenectomy (PS) as a definitive or interim spleen-preserving strategy in young children with transfusion-dependent congenital hemolytic anemia (HA).
METHODS: Patients with congenital HA who required frequent blood transfusions and underwent PS at the present center between 2010 and 2025 were included. The hemoglobin (Hb) level, reticulocyte count, and the need for transfusions (if any) during the follow-up period were noted. Ultrasonography of the splenic remnant was obtained at baseline, 1 mo, and 18 mo following the PS.
