The present study sought to characterize the expression and distribution of complex glycoconjugates in the rat retina by lectin histochemistry, using a panel of 21 different lectins with different carbohydrate specificities. Paraffin sections of Carnoy-fixed Sprague-Dawley rat eyes were stained with various biotinylated lectins, followed by the streptavidin-peroxidase and glucose oxidase-diaminobenzidine-nickel staining procedures. PURPOSE: To report an unusual case of hypovitaminosis A with bilateral papilledema and flecked retina that regressed after restoration of vitamin A deficiency.
METHOD: Case report. A 27-year-old woman had undergone a biliopancreatic bypass for obesity in 1990. In 1995, she presented with bilateral xerophthalmia, bilateral papilledema, and bilateral flecked retina.
RESULTS: Laboratory tests demonstrated low serum levels of vitamin A (0.8 micromol/l) and vitamin E (8.54 micromol/l). Xerophthalmia, papilledema, and flecked retina disappeared after restoration of normal vitamin A blood levels.

Melatonin release was measured from zebrafish pineal organs and retinas maintained in flow-through culture. Pineal organs released melatonin in a strong circadian rhythm through 5 days in constant darkness, and the phase of this rhythm was reset by in vitro exposure to phase-shifted light cycles. In contrast, the retinal melatonin rhythm rapidly damped out in constant darkness, even in the presence of (phase-shifted) light cycles. The zebrafish pineal should be useful for in vitro studies of vertebrate circadian clock mechanisms.

Silicone oil as endotamponade in cases with attached retina is only indicated in a few very selected cases. These are cases with a high risk of intravitreal hemorrhage and a need for quick visual rehabilitation. We examined 23 patients, who had undergone pars plana vitrectomy and silicone oil filling. We report histological findings of the retina from an eye with congenital stationary night blindness. The case was an 82-year-old woman who showed a Schubert-Bornschein type electroretinogram, and whose eye was enucleated due to orbital invasion of paranasal malignant melanoma. The function of the retina and optic nerve was studied in 79 patients with contusions of the eyeball of various severity. A complex electrophysiological method was used, consisting of recording of visual evoked potentials and of the general and macular electroretinograms, assessment of the threshold electrical sensitivity and lability. Changes were detected in all the layers of the retina and optic nerve, the degree of these changes augmenting with the severity of injury. Changes in the functional parameters of the paired intact eyes, similar in the trend, were observed.

Isolated bovine retina was taken and a graded traction force applied to determine retinal profile as a function of force.
