Unilateral hemi-central retinal artery occlusion as a presenting sign of Susac syndrome.

A young woman presented at our clinic with sudden visual loss in the right eye, recurrent vertigo, and right-sided tinnitus. We performed a … therapy improved the patient's visual acuity and the remission of her other symptoms. Hemi-central retinal artery occlusion is an atypical neuro-ophthalmological finding in this disease. However, its identification as a sign of Susac syndrome may facilitate timely diagnosis and accurate treatment.

Central retinal artery occlusion in a child with ADA2 deficiency: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Deficiency of ADA2 (DADA2) is the first molecularly described monogenic vasculitis syndrome. During the past decade, DADA2's clinical spectrum has expanded significantly as the number of reported cases has increased. CASE PRESENTATION: A 5-year-old boy with DADA2 who experienced sudden onset left-sided vision loss due to unilateral central retinal artery occlusion. The patient had a history of recurrent fever and arthralgia with high inflammatory markers (C-reactive protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate). Brain MRI showed mild limbic encephalitis, and MRA was…

Length of Carotid Plaque Impacts Retinal Microvascular Densities of Carotid Artery Stenosis Patients.

PURPOSE: We explored the retinal microvascular changes in carotid artery stenosis (CAS) and their relationship with carotid plaque morphology. METHODS: All participants were diagnosed with carotid artery stenosis by a neurologist. Participants underwent digital subtraction angiography (DSA) and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) imaging. The degree and length of carotid plaque were obtained from the DSA tool. OCTA tool measured the densities in the superficial vascular complex (SVC) and deep vascular complex (DVC). RESULTS: One hundred seventeen patients with CAS patients were i

Intravenous Recombinant Tissue-Type Plasminogen Activator Thrombolysis for Acute Central Retinal Artery Occlusion.

INTRODUCTION: Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO), an ocular stroke, causes severe and permanent visual impairment. Thrombolytic therapy is currently the main treatment option for CRAO. Intravenous thrombolysis with recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator (rt-PA) has been extensively applied in the treatment of CRAO with the proven advantages of effectiveness and safety. This meta-analysis aimed to assess the efficacy of intravenous rt-PA thrombolysis for the management of CRAO by evaluating the pooled evidence. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search of electronic databases incl…

Acute Central Retinal Artery Occlusion Seen within 24 Hours at a Tertiary Institution.

OBJECTIVE: Acute central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is an emergency with poor visual outcome. Intravenous thrombolysis within 4.5 h of vision loss is safe and may improve vision, but is rarely administered because of frequent delays in presentation. We describe a subgroup of CRAO patients presenting within 24 h of vision loss to a tertiary care center affiliated with a comprehensive stroke center. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective review of 181 consecutive CRAO patients seen at our institution from 2010 to 2020. RESULTS: Out of 181 CRAO patients, 62 (34%) presented within 24 h of vis…

Bilateral central retinal artery occlusion: An exceptional complication after frontal parasagittal meningioma resection.

BACKGROUND: Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is a rare acute disease associated with great morbidity. It is reported as a complication of surgical procedures, but rarely associated with brain surgery and no reports before due to parasagittal meningioma resection. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present the case of a 41-year-old female who underwent surgery for a parasagittal meningioma and developed a bilateral CRAO as an acute postoperative complication. Most common causes, such as cardiac embolism, carotid pathology and coagulation problems, were discussed and all clinical and neuroradiological…

Retinal Detachment and Temporal Artery Dissection: An Elusive Case of Giant Cell Arteritis.

Giant cell arteritis (GCA), also known as temporal arteritis, is the most common systemic inflammatory vasculitis occurring in the elderly. Patients usually present with vision loss, headache, jaw claudication, diplopia, myalgia and constitutional symptoms. The most common ocular manifestations are anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION), choroidal ischemia and central retinal artery occlusion. Here we describe a case of GCA presenting with vision changes secondary to retinal detachment and vitreous hemorrhage. Upon temporal artery biopsy, GCA was confirmed and it was found to be accompanied…

Central retinal artery occlusion as a post-transfusion complication of red blood cells.

A 32-year-old woman presented with a history of uterine myomatosis and repeated bleeding for 6 months. This produced a haemoglobin concentration of 6.5 g/dL, with a requirement for a red blood cell transfusion. One hour after the transfusion, she presented with a sudden and painless loss of vision in the right eye (RE). As she had no other symptoms, she was referred to the Neuro-Ophthalmology Department. On admission, her corrected visual acuity was hand movement in RE, and 0.6 in the left eye (LE). The anterior segment was unremarkable, except for a relative afferent pupillary defect in RE. I

Topography of the Central Retinal Artery Relevant to Retrobulbar Reperfusion in Filler Complications.

BACKGROUND: Vision loss caused by retrograde occlusion of the central retinal artery is a serious complication of cosmetic filler injections. Salvage methods that involve applying hyaluronidases in the retrobulbar space to degrade filler materials have been proposed recently for rescuing the retinal circulation in an ophthalmic emergency. METHODS: Sixty-six eyeballs and orbital contents were extracted from formalin-embalmed cadavers and dissected carefully to examine the topographic relationship of the central retinal artery and optic nerve. To observe the three-dimensional course of a centra…
