Tick-borne encephalitis (central european encephalitis) and Lyme disease (erythema chronicum migrans) are diseases mainly transmitted by ticks of the ixodus ricinus species. The tick-borne encephalitis, a virus infection, can produce severe encephalitic symptoms. There is no specific treatment but the infection can be prevented by active or passive immunization. Lyme disease is caused by a spirochete (borrelia burgdorferi). Due to the variety of often uncharacteristic symptoms this infection is not easily recognized. However, early diagnosis and antibiotic treatment are necessary to prevent ch…

The paper summarizes state of art knowledge on tick-borne diseases epidemiology in Poland. The most prevalent diseases are Lyme borreliosis (LB) and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE). Although there is growing number of data published on anaplasmosis and babesiosis prevalence in ticks and humans, there is no national data on these diseases and their epidemiological features remain unclear. All tick-borne agents have a common vector tick--the sheep tick Ixodes ricinus. LB and TBE are mandatory reportable diseases. In 2005 case definitions were implemented in Poland to allow a better comparability o…

The prevalence of ticks infected by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato on birds during their migrations was studied in Switzerland. A total of 1,270 birds captured at two sites were examined for tick infestation. Ixodes ricinus was the dominant tick species. Prevalences of tick infestation were 6% and 18.2% for birds migrating northward and southward, respectively. Borrelia valaisiana was the species detected most frequently in ticks, followed by Borrelia garinii and Borrelia lusitaniae. Among birds infested by infected ticks, 23% (6/26) were infested by B. lusitaniae-infected larvae. Migratory b…

Data on the epidemiology of bovine babesiosis in France were collected from two sources: a questionnaire sent to large animal veterinary surgeons and blood samples collected from cattle treated for clinical babesiosis. Babesia divergens was common and widespread. B major was found in only one sample. The disease was particularly widespread in north west, south west and central France. The mean clinical incidence was 0.4 per cent. The bimodal seasonality of the clinical cases was correlated with that of the tick vector (Ixodes ricinus). Of the affected animals 72.6 per cent were more than three…

The author describes his technique of collecting Mallophaga on live birds (chiefly Passeres, size like sparrow or blackbird). The description comprises the collecting of Mallophaga and the thorough examination of the Mallophaga infestation typical of the host. By these examinations valuable information about biology and ecology of the biting lice species can be obtained. The examinations can be combined with the ringing of the birds. Whereas Ischnocera of one host usually allow qualitative and quantitative determination, Amblycera (with the exception of Ricinus) do not always. Considering the …

From 3,404 Ixodes ricinus ticks collected in 12 localities of Styria, Austria in 1990, 15 tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus isolates were recovered. Minimal field infection rate reached 4.4 virus containing ticks out of 1,000 collected ticks. Five isolates of TBE virus were obtained from target organs of Apodemus flavicollis trapped in locality Wagnitz. In a serosurvey based on virus neutralizing antibodies high prevalence of TBE virus was demonstrated in A. flavicollis (47.9%) and Clethrionomys glareolus (29.4%). These rodents formed 57.8% and 41.0% of 83 trapped small mammals.

The sand fly Phlebotomus papatasi transmits Leishmania major, which causes cutaneous leishmaniasis, in vast regions of the Old World. In addition to blood, the sand flies feed on plants. In a study of this diet, we observed that one night of feeding on branches of Solanum jasminoides, Ricinus communis, or Bougainvillea glabra drastically shortened the life span of the sand flies. Flowering B. glabra attracted P. papatasi in the field. Nevertheless, in the region endemic for L. major in yards abounding with vector sand flies, the number of P. papatasi trapped near hedges of B. glabra was eight …

Ticks are important vectors for several pathogens, among which Francisella tularensis subsp. holarctica is the most relevant tularaemia-causing subspecies in Europe. The number of human tularaemia cases in Germany has increased in recent years, and ticks play an important role in disease transmission. The aim of this study was to perform a pilot study addressing the presence of tick-borne pathogens in ticks across Germany, with a special focus on Francisella. A total of 339 Dermacentor reticulatus ticks and 353 Ixodes ricinus ticks were collected in Germany between 2021 and 2024. DNA was extra…

The periurban forest of Neuchâtel (Switzerland) is a high-risk area for Lyme Borreliosis, due to a high density of infected Ixodes ricinus ticks. In this study, we evaluated the risk of subclinical (seroconversion) and clinical infection after a tick bite in Neuchâtel inhabitants from 2003 to 2005. Inhabitants have been invited, through media, to visit a physician after a tick bite. A questionnaire was filled out and two blood samples were taken at 8-week interval. EIA screening tests for IgM and IgG (IMX system, Abbott) were applied for paired sera. In case of a change in antibody titres betw…

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) causes serious zoonotic diseases in humans in Europe and Asia, characterised by central nervous system infections. The risk of TBEV transmission to humans from the milk of infected ruminant animals is the primary source of foodborne TBE infection. Ixodid (Ixodes ricinus) ticks are present in Türkiye. This is the first study investigating foodborne TBEV in raw milk obtained from ruminant animals in Türkiye. Raw milk was collected from 900 ruminant animals in six provinces. It was analysed for viral nucleic acids using real-time reverse transcription PCR (rtR…

The lectin-binding pattern of malignant and benign human epidermal tumours was studied. Twelve squamous cell carcinomas and ten kerato-acanthomas were investigated, using fluorochrome-conjugated lectins. Lectins used were Canavalia ensiformis agglutinin (Con-A), Helix pomatia agglutinin (HPA), Phaseolus vulgaris agglutinin (PHA-L), and Ricinus communis agglutinin (RCA-120). Two types of fluorescence pattern, Intercellular 'Pemphigus-like' and Peritumoral, were noted. Both allowed classification of these tumours on the basis of their lectin-binding reactivity. Moreover, the expression of recept…

Tick-borne meningoencephalitis is a zoonosis that shows an upward trend. The causative agent is an RNA virus of the family Flaviviridae whose vector in Central Europe is the castor bean tick (Ixodes ricinus). The infection is most often transmitted via tick bite or, less commonly, by the alimentary route, through the consumption of unpasteurized milk of infected animals. Preventive measures consist in personal protection from ticks, exceptionally in blanket treatment with contact insecticides, in preventing consumption of unpasteurized milk and dairy products from areas with a high incidence o…
