The influence of zinc oxide utilization in ruminants: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Zinc (Zn) is an essential trace mineral involved in rumen microbial activity, nutrient metabolism, and animal productivity. This meta-analysis quantitatively evaluated the effects of ZnO supplementation on rumen fermentation characteristics, nutrient utilization, and productive performance in ruminants using 17 eligible studies published between 1971 and 2025. Standardized mean differences (SMD) were pooled using random-effects models. Heterogeneity was assessed using I² statistics, while subgroup analysis were performed according to ZnO form. Publication bias was evaluated using funnel plot i…

Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transitions Leading to Conceptus Adhesion in Ruminants: Early Pregnancy Events in Cattle.

Trophoblast-endometrium interactions play a critical role in the processes of conceptus elongation, attachment, and adhesion, followed by placental development during early pregnancy in ruminants. The attachment between uterine epithelium and trophoblast cells, which is epithelial in nature, requires epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT), where the fetal trophoblasts come into contact with maternal epithelial cells without fully invading the maternal tissues. Understanding the early developmental period driving EMT processes in utero in ruminants is fundamental to improving fertility thro…

Molecular detection and CATL-based genotyping of Trypanosoma theileri in small ruminants from Türkiye.

Trypanosoma theileri is a vector-borne parasitic pathogen and can affect a wide range of hosts. Although this parasite is known to have a low pathogenicity in animals, in some cases, it can cause clinical infections in animals. Although most of the studies on the epidemiology of T. theileri have been conducted in cattle, there are limited studies investigating the pathogen in small ruminants. There is no information on the epidemiology of T. theileri in small ruminants in Türkiye. In present study, 765 small ruminant (428 from sheep and 337 from goats) blood samples obtained from different pro…

Effects of microbiota-testis interactions on the reproductive health of male ruminants: A review.

Ruminants are one of the world's economically important species, and their reproductive health is critical to the economic development of the livestock industry. In recent years, research on the relationship between microbiota and reproductive health has received much attention. Microbiota disruption affects the developmental health of the testes and epididymis, the male reproductive organs of the host, which in turn is related to sperm quality. Maintaining a stable microbiota protects the host from pathogens and increases breeding performance, which in turn promotes the economic development o…

Retrospective study of Oestrus ovis larvae infestation in small ruminants in Grenada, West Indies.

Oestrosis is a nasal cavity myiasis caused by Oestrus ovis larvae from Oetrus ovis diptera flies in small ruminants. The presence of the larvae in the nasal cavity is known to cause rhinitis and sinusitis which can negatively impact the productivity of small ruminants. The aim of the present study was to estimate the prevalence of Oestrus ovis larvae infestation in sheep and goats presented for necropsy. We reviewed necropsy records of sheep and goats submitted to the Veterinary Pathology diagnostic laboratory at St. George's University from 2001 to 2017. Out of 104 goat necropsy cases, Oestru…

Coinfection kinetics of goatpox virus and peste-des-petits-ruminants virus in Vero cells.

Goatpox, sheeppox, and peste-des-petits-ruminants (PPR) are economically important virus diseases affecting goats and sheep, which often cause coinfection/comorbidities in the field. Coinfection with these viruses leads to enhanced infection in natural scenarios in terms of morbidities and mortalities. Currently, individual live attenuated vaccines are being used to mitigate these diseases and research on combination vaccines for these diseases is encouraging. For the preparation of combination vaccines, vaccine strains of the peste-des-petits-ruminants virus (PPRV), goatpox virus (GTPV), and …

Investigation of Macrolide Resistance Genotypes of Pasteurella multocida Isolates from Cattle and Small Ruminants.

Macrolides are commonly used to control respiratory tract infections in ruminants, but the susceptibility of Pasteurella multocida strains has shown a decrease to macrolide antibiotics in the last decade. In this work we assessed the prevalence of macrolide resistance of 100 P. multocida isolates from ruminant hosts and studied the resistance genotypes with newly designed PCRs. Susceptibility to erythromycin and tilmicosin was tested using minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) test strips. A newly designed PCR was used for the detection of macAB genes, and a PCR plus restriction enzyme-based …

Longitudinal Study of Selected Bacterial Zoonoses in Small Ruminants in Tana River County, Kenya.

Brucellosis, Q fever, and leptospirosis are priority zoonoses worldwide, yet their epidemiology is understudied, and studies investigating multiple pathogens are scarce. Therefore, we selected 316 small ruminants in irrigated, pastoral, and riverine settings in Tana River County and conducted repeated sampling for animals that were initially seronegative between September 2014 and June 2015. We carried out serological and polymerase chain reaction tests and determined risk factors for exposure. The survey-weighted serological incidence rates were 1.8 (95% confidence intervals [CI]: 1.3-2.5) an…

Prevalence and Implications of Shiga Toxin-Producing E. coli in Farm and Wild Ruminants.

Shiga-toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) is a food-borne pathogen that causes human gastrointestinal infections across the globe, leading to kidney failure or even death in severe cases. E. coli are commensal members of humans and animals' (cattle, bison, and pigs) guts, however, may acquire Shiga-toxin-encoded phages. This acquisition or colonization by STEC may lead to dysbiosis in the intestinal microbial community of the host. Wildlife and livestock animals can be asymptomatically colonized by STEC, leading to pathogen shedding and transmission. Furthermore, there has been a steady up

Vaginal cytology and cervical mucus as tools to predict ovulation time in small ruminants.

The possibility of using cervical mucus and vaginal cytology as tools to predict ovulation time was assessed in 11 ewes and 11 does raised under tropical conditions. Every 12 h from progesterone removal to ovulation, estrus behavior, cervical mucus, vaginal cytology, and ovarian ultrasound exams were performed. In goats, vaginal cytology had 88% of accuracy on detecting the ovulation time. However, in sheep, there was no cell pattern in the vaginal cytology and cervical mucus varied at ovulation. In conclusion, both vaginal cytology and mucus evaluation may be useful tools to determine the ovu
