Calm Down and Enjoy It: Influence of Leader-Employee Mindfulness on Flow Experience.

PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate the effect of mindfulness on flow at the organizational and individual levels. Based on perseverative cognition theory, we introduced work-related rumination (affective rumination and problem-solving pondering) as the transmitter in these processes. METHODS: This study conducted a three-wave longitudinal survey. The data of 458 employees and 114 leaders were collected from three software parks in China. Multilevel structural equation modeling and the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method were adopted to test all hypotheses. RESULTS: Employee mindfulness and

Attention difficulties and mood-related ruminative response style in adolescents with unipolar depression.

BACKGROUND: Depressed adults may show impairment in switching attention from one task to another. Rumination on negative thoughts is associated with the onset and persistence of depressive episodes. It is unclear if such mood-related ruminations are specifically associated with slowed ability in switching attention from one task to another. METHOD: Adolescents with current unipolar depression (n = 40) were compared with age and sex-matched controls (n = 38) on tests of attention and general cognitive abilities and completed the mood-related ruminative response style questionnaire. RESULTS: C

Transdiagnostic phenomena of psychopathology in the context of the RDoC: protocol of a multimodal cross-sectional study.

In the past, affective and cognitive processes related to psychopathology have been examined within the boundaries of phenotype-based diagnostic labels, which has led to inconsistent findings regarding their underlying operating principles. Investigating these processes dimensionally in healthy individuals and by means of multiple modalities may provide additional insights into the psychological and neuronal mechanisms at their core. The transdiagnostic phenomena Neuroticism and Rumination are known to be closely linked. However, the exact nature of their relationship remains to be elucidated.

The Effects of Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Antidepressant Response on Cold Cognition: A Single-Arm Prospective Longitudinal Study.

PURPOSE: The cognitive neuropsychological model of depression suggests that the cognitive deficits observed in depressed subjects are the result of attenuated top-down cognitive control resulting in increased bottom-up emotional processing. Remediation of cognitive impairments in cold cognition has been proposed as a valuable treatment for depression. The study aimed to examine the effects of clinical response to repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on cold cognition over the course of 8 weeks in medication-refractory depressed subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-two medica

Moment-to-moment interaction between affectivity and coping behaviours in bipolar disorder and the role of cognitive appraisals.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with bipolar disorder respond to affective symptoms with a range of coping behaviours, which may further maintain the symptoms. AIMS: To examine moment-to-moment dynamics between affective states and coping behaviours, and to evaluate the role of cognitive appraisals of internal states as moderators. METHOD: Forty-six individuals with bipolar disorder completed a clinical interview and an experience sampling assessment over 6 days. Time-lagged analyses were conducted by multilevel regression modelling. RESULTS: A total of 1807 momentary entries were analysed. Negativ

Cognitive vulnerability factors associated with antenatal depression among Chinese pregnant women: A cross-sectional study.

It has been recognized that cognitive processes play an important role in the onset and maintenance of depression. However, little research has tested whether this predictive role of the same processes holds in the antenatal period, a time of tremendous, complex change and adjustment for an expectant mother. The aim of this study was to determine the cognitive influencing factors that may increase the risk of developing antenatal depression (AND) at the third trimester of pregnancy. It was a cross-sectional study, in which women completed questionnaire measures at their third trimester of preg

Exploring the optimal factor structure of mind-wandering: Associations with neuroticism.

Mind-wandering is an essential cognitive process in which people engage for 30-50% of their waking day and is highly associated with neuroticism. The current study identified the factor structure of retrospective self-report items related to mind-wandering and perseverative cognition content and explored these associations with neuroticism. In an adult community sample (N = 309), items from the NYC Cognition Questionnaire, the Penn State Worry Questionnaire Short Form, and the Rumination Responses Brooding Subscale were entered into factor analyses to test the optimal factor structure of these

The Relationship Between Co-rumination and Depressive Symptoms: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Numerous studies have explored the link between co-rumination and depressive symptoms, but a consensus remains elusive. This study proposes a dual-pathway model to explain this relationship through a "positive path" (adaptive response) and a "negative path" (distress response). It also conducts a meta-analysis to evaluate the exact association between co-rumination and depressive symptoms in children, adolescents, and young adults. A total of 66 studies (27,794 participants) were included in the meta-analysis. In this study, the main effect test revealed a significant positive correlation betw

Experimental Induction of State Rumination in Youth Soccer Players on the Pitch: How Can We Evaluate an Effect of Rumination on Soccer-Specific Performance?

Based on the goal progress theory, we examined whether cueing an unresolved goal triggers state rumination in athletes and consequently leads to performance deterioration. However, experimental approaches are usually conducted in the laboratory and only rarely in the field. Therefore, the aim of this proof-of-concept study was to verify whether the findings obtained in previous experimental studies could be transferred and confirmed in the field. For this purpose, the study was applied during regular training sessions. Fifty soccer players (f = 17, m = 33, age range: 14-18 years; Mage = 16.38)

Functional connectivity in rumination: a systematic review of magnetic resonance imaging studies.

INTRODUCTION: Rumination, defined as intrusive and repetitive thoughts in response to negative emotions, uncertainty, and inconsistency between goal and current situation, is a significant risk factor for depressive disorders. The rumination literature presents diverse findings on functional connectivity and shows heterogeneity in research methods. This systematic review seeks to integrate these findings and provide readers diverse perspectives. METHOD: For this purpose, the literature on functional connectivity in rumination was reviewed according to the PRISMA guidelines. Regional connectiv

Highest correlations between emotion regulation strategies and mood symptoms in bipolar disorder: A systematic review and Bayesian network meta-analysis.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with alterations in emotion regulation (ER) strategies, with both depressive and (hypo)manic symptoms correlated with utilization of maladaptive instead of adaptive strategies. However, which ER strategies are the most affected during the most severe mood symptoms remains unclear despite the potentially relevant treatment implications. To this end, we conducted a systematic review and Bayesian network meta-analysis (NMA) of studies documenting correlations between ER and depressive and (hypo)manic symptoms of BD, from inception until November 9th, 2023. We i

Emotion regulation training for adolescents with major depression: Results from a randomized controlled trial.

Difficulties in emotion regulation (ER) are thought to contribute to the development and maintenance of major depression (MD) in adolescents. In healthy adults, a task-based training of ER has previously proven effective to reduce stress, but no such studies are available for MD. It is also unclear whether findings can be generalized onto adolescent populations. The final sample consisted of n = 70 adolescents with MD, who were randomized to a task-based ER training (n = 36) or a control training (n = 34). Across four sessions, the ER group was trained to downregulate negative affect to negati

Depressive rumination is correlated with brain responses during self-related processing.

BACKGROUND: Rumination, a tendency to focus on negative self-related thoughts, is a central symptom of depression. Studying the self-related aspect of such symptoms is challenging because of the need to distinguish self effects from the emotional content of task stimuli. This study employed an emotionally neutral self-related paradigm to investigate possible altered self-processing in depression and its link to rumination. METHODS: People with major depressive disorder (n = 25) and controls (n = 25) underwent task-based electro-encephalogram recording. We studied late event-related potentials

Goal-directed rumination and its antagonistic effects on problem solving: a two-week diary study.

BACKGROUND: The tendency to repetitively and intrusively think about a particular negative event, goal failure, or problem (i.e., goal-directed rumination) is generally associated with impairments in well-being, thus decreasing performance in solving this failure. However, rumination is also associated with higher levels of resources invested in problem solving, likely leading to an improvement in performance. OBJECTIVES: The current study thus examines the indirect effect of rumination via various mediators on subjective problem-solving performance in the everyday context. DESIGN: Over a pe

Commentary on the Special Issue on Moral Injury: Leveraging Existing Constructs to Test the Heuristic Model of Moral Injury.

The literature on moral injury (MI) is currently undermined by the lack of clear boundaries regarding the construct and a dearth of research on the processes by which potentially morally injurious events lead to MI. The heuristic continuum model of moral stressors proposes ways of distinguishing between moral frustrations, moral distress, and MI. In this commentary, we highlight five testable principles that can be derived from the heuristic model and evaluated using well-established constructs. Specifically, we describe meaningful distinctions between guilt and shame and address how these mor

Sequential effects of reappraisal and rumination on anger during recall of an anger-provoking event.

In everyday life, people often combine strategies to regulate their emotions. However, to date, most research has investigated emotion regulation strategies as if they occur independently from one another. The current study aims to better understand the sequential interplay between strategies by investigating how reappraisal and rumination interact to affect anger experience. After participants (N = 156) recalled a recent anger-provoking event, they were instructed to either a) reappraise the event twice, b) reappraise the event, and then ruminate about the event, c) ruminate about the event,

Emotion regulation strategies in mania risk: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Difficulties in emotion regulation may contribute to the development of mania. This review aimed to assess how emotion regulation strategies reported by individuals at risk of mania compare with clinical and nonclinical controls. METHODS: Search terms relating to mania risk and emotion regulation were entered into three databases. Sixteen studies were included. RESULTS: Mania risk was typically associated with overall endorsement of emotion regulation strategies, particularly dampening, and positive and negative rumination. CONCLUSIONS: Findings were limited by overall lack of e

A novel process-based approach to improve resilience: Effects of computerized mouse-based (gaze)contingent attention training (MCAT) on reappraisal and rumination.

Stress dysregulation is a transdiagnostic marker of emotional disorders, related to biases in attention toward negative information. We adapted a computerized process-based training targeting these attention mechanisms through mouse-based contingency responses and examined its effects on reappraisal and rumination. Forty-one participants were randomly assigned to either a control or an active training condition of mouse-based contingent attention training (MCAT). Participants in the active condition were instructed to allocate attention toward positive words to generate positive interpretation
