INTRODUCTION: Energized ballistic fragments from improvised explosive devices were the most common cause of injury to coalition service personnel during conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Surgical excision of retained fragments is not routinely performed unless there is a concern for injury to vital structures. However, no clear guidelines dictate when or if a fragment should be removed, reflecting a lack of objective evidence of their long-term effects. Using a porcine model, we aimed to evaluate changes to the carotid artery produced by retained fragments over time.

BACKGROUND: Vesiviruses (family Caliciviridae) had been shown capable of invading a variety of host species, raising concern of their zoonotic potential. Since the 1980's, several canine caliciviruses (CaCV) isolates have been reported and are phylogenetically related to the vesiviruses with features distinct from both Vesicular exanthema of swine virus (VESV) and Feline calicivirus (FCV) species in phylogeny, serology and cell culture specificities. Etiological studies of canine diseases in dogs used for military services and laboratory studies were conducted in 1963-1978 at the Walter Reed A

BACKGROUND: Medication errors are one of the most common types of errors in health care; however, similar data are limited to veterinary institutions. Pharmacists are not always present in veterinary hospitals. Therefore, all staff members actively engaged in the dispensation of medications must be aware of the high incidence of medication errors.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to quantify the amount of and assess the types of medication errors that occur frequently within a veterinary teaching hospital (including both large and small animal patients), identify the specific medications that are

Emergency care of raptors often requires extensive diagnostics and therapeutic regimens to stabilize and support the ill or injured raptor. Whether falconry birds, educational birds, or raptors from the wild are presented, various medical conditions must be addressed to help guide the practitioner toward a complete recovery for the raptor.

Schistosomiasis, helminthic zoonoses and NTDs constitute a considerable majority of the diseases of poverty in the world. The RNAS+ targeted zoonoses are not only problems to human and animal health, but also cause poverty in 1 billion poor livestock keepers as well as result in 2.3 billion cases of human illness and 1.7 million human deaths a year. The gaps in research of those targeted zoonoses are urgently addressed by identifying the research priority, fulfilled by improving the multisectoral cooperation and strengthening the interventions in the control programme.

From the time it was conceptualized in 1998 to the present, RNAS+ has largely concentrated on research that will generate results to facilitate control, prevention and elimination of its target diseases. Diagnostics has remained an active field of research in order to develop tools that are appropriate for each stage from the first efforts until attempts to block transmission. For example, with regard to schistosomiasis, chemotherapy has excellent impact on morbidity, while better diagnostics and vaccine research have been promoted to complement the other components of the control programme. BACKGROUND: Eliminating malaria requires vector control interventions that dramatically reduce adult mosquito population densities and survival rates. Indoor applications of insecticidal nets and sprays are effective against an important minority of mosquito species that rely heavily upon human blood and habitations for survival. However, complementary approaches are needed to tackle a broader diversity of less human-specialized vectors by killing them at other resource targets.
METHODS: Impacts of strategies that target insecticides to humans or animals can be rationalized in terms of biolog

Snakebite envenoming disproportionately affects Indigenous populations in the Brazilian Amazon, where centralized healthcare systems limit timely access to antivenom. The recently implemented SAVING Program has decentralized antivenom delivery to Indigenous primary healthcare facilities, improving access and clinical outcomes. This article examines the ethical considerations encountered and the approaches adopted to address these challenges. Using the WHO/TDR framework for ethics in implementation research as a starting point, we continuously adapted to ethical issues arising during the planni

Bites from animal and humans represent a very small proportion of all the patients presenting to emergency departments, However, they require prompt medical and surgical intervention in order to minimise the risk of infection, that may lead to limb and life-threatening complications. In this review article we synthesise the existing literature for treatment of human and animal bites and offer practical considerations when managing bite injuries.

In the second part of this JACC State-of-the-Art Review, an early and sustainable preventive care plan is described for cardiometabolic-based chronic disease. This plan can improve cardiometabolic health by targeting early mechanistic events to decrease the risk for certain cardiovascular diseases (e.g., coronary heart disease, heart failure, and atrial fibrillation). Included are various prevention modalities, intensive lifestyle interventions, pharmacotherapy and cardiovascular outcome trial evidence, and bariatric/metabolic procedures. A tactical approach of implementing published clinical

This systematic review investigated evidence for the effectiveness of trained assistance dogs as an intervention and support for people with dementia. Peer-reviewed articles were retrieved from multiple databases (SCOPUS, Web of Science, and Google Scholar). Reference lists of the articles retrieved were also screened to identify key authors for inclusion. Articles were subject to a quality review, and the results synthesised to address the research questions. Both qualitative and quantitative data were reported. There was evidence of the potential positive effects of dog-assisted intervention

BACKGROUND: Rabies is a fatal but preventable viral disease that poses a global health threat, especially in developing countries. Despite the high incidence of animal bites reported annually in Egypt, limited data exist regarding the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of the general population toward rabies and rabies prophylaxis.
METHODS: We conducted a nationwide cross-sectional study using a structured interview-based survey targeting individuals aged 18 years or older who attended outpatient clinics at nine university hospitals across Egypt. The survey assessed participants' KAP t

Camels are the most efficient domesticated animals in arid and semiarid areas of the world. In Ethiopia, they are the main livestock kept to sustain the livelihoods of pastoralists, as camels are used for milk and meat production and also for transportation. However, she-camel reproductive diseases are one of the major constraints for camel-producing communities. A cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2018 to December 2019 to identify and characterize pathological lesions and isolate possible bacteria associated with reproductive diseases and disorders in she-camels slaughtered at

BACKGROUND: Zoonoses are common causes of human and livestock illness in Tanzania. Previous studies have shown that brucellosis, leptospirosis, and Q fever account for a large proportion of human febrile illness in northern Tanzania, yet they are infrequently diagnosed. We conducted this study to assess awareness and knowledge regarding selected zoonoses among healthcare providers in Moshi, Tanzania; to determine what diagnostic and treatment protocols are utilized; and obtain insights into contextual factors contributing to the apparent under-diagnosis of zoonoses.

Background and Objectives: Epidemiological data indicate that blast exposure is the most common morbidity responsible for mild TBI among Service Members (SMs) during recent military operations. Blast-induced tinnitus is a comorbidity frequently reported by veterans, and despite its wide prevalence, it is also one of the least understood. Tinnitus arising from blast exposure is usually associated with direct structural damage that results in a conductive and sensorineural impairment in the auditory system. Tinnitus is also believed to be initiated by abnormal neuronal activities and temporal ch

Toxicology studies of cobalt sulfate heptahydrate (99%percnt; pure) were conducted by exposing groups of F344/N rats and B6C3F1 mice of each sex to a cobalt sulfate heptahydrate aerosol 6 hours per day, 5 days per week, for 16 days or 13 weeks. In 16-day studies, all rats and mice exposed at the top concentration of 200 mg cobalt sulfate/m3 died (5 animals per group); partial survival was seen in the 50 mg/m(3) exposure groups. Degeneration of the olfactory epithelium and necrotizing inflammation occurred in the nose of all rats and mice that died and in animals exposed to 50 mg/m(3). Necrotiz
