Vulvar lichen sclerosus (VLS) is a progressive skin disease of unknown etiology. In this longitudinal case-control exploratory study, we evaluated the hormonal and microbial landscapes in 18 postmenopausal females (mean [SD] age: 64.4 [8.4] years) with VLS and controls. We reevaluated the patients with VLS after 10-14 weeks of daily topical class I steroid. We found that groin cutaneous estrone was lower in VLS than in controls (-22.33, 95% confidence interval [CI] = -36.96 to -7.70; P = .006); cutaneous progesterone was higher (5.73, 95% CI = 3.74-7.73; P < .0001). Forehead 11-deoxycortisol (

Psoriasis has a multifactorial pathogenesis and recently it was shown that alterations in the skin and intestinal microbiome are involved in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. Therefore, microbiome restoration becomes a promising preventive/therapy strategy in psoriasis. In our pre-clinical study design using a mice model of induced psoriatic dermatitis (Ps) we have tested the proof-of-concept that IgY raised against pathological human bacteria resistant to antibiotics can alleviate psoriatic lesions and restore deregulated immune cell parameters. Besides clinical evaluation of the mice and histol

Palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) is a chronic, recurrent skin disease belonging to the spectrum of psoriasis. It is characterized by an eruption of sterile pustules on the palms and soles. Recent studies in PPP have focused on genetic differences between pustular phenotypes and the role of the innate immunological system and the microbiome in the etiopathogenesis of the disease. Mutations in IL36RN (a major predisposing factor for generalized pustular psoriasis) were found in selected patients with PPP and were associated with earlier disease onset. Studies have shown that the interleukin (IL)-17

Background: Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the pilosebaceous unit in which Cutibacterium acnes plays an important role in disease pathogenesis. Rising antimicrobial resistance has intensified interest in selective antimicrobial strategies for acne vulgaris. Bacteriophage-derived endolysins may offer targeted antibacterial activity while potentially sparing the skin microbiota. This scoping review aimed to map current evidence regarding endolysins targeting C. acnes and to evaluate their antibacterial activity, selectivity, safety, formulation challenges, and translational

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterized by painful inflammatory lesions, predominantly affecting areas of the skin rich in apocrine glands, such as inguinal, axillary, submammary, and anogenital regions, with an estimated global prevalence between 1%-4%. The treatment of HS is challenging with various treatment modalities employed to control the disease. Since the condition is chronic and life-impairing, many patients have looked for ways to complement their conventional treatment procedures with non-medical interventions, among which dietary interv

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To present the most recent evidence on atopic dermatitis and its relation to food allergy.
RECENT FINDINGS: Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the skin characterized by impaired skin barrier because of multifactorial causes including genetic factors, immune dysregulation, and skin microbiome dysbiosis. Infants with temporary skin barrier disruption and/or persistent atopic dermatitis are particularly at risk of developing food allergy (during the so-called atopic march), with up to half of patients demonstrating positive food-specific IgE and one-third …

Amyloodiniosis, caused by the ectoparasite Amyloodinium ocellatum, affects the healthy development of mariculture. This study used a local infection method to identify the pathogenic target organ responsible for the death of infected fish. Comparing the relationship between the abundance of trophonts in gills and skin with the mortality of infected fish using local infection showed that severe gill infections cause the mortality of infected fish. At the 40 % survival rate of infected fish, the parasite abundance in the gill was 14,167 ± 4371. The gill filaments of the infected fish were struct

HIV infection alters the skin microbiome and predisposes to a wide range of cutaneous infections, from atypical presentations of common skin infections to severe disseminated infections involving the skin that are AIDS-defining illnesses. Bacterial infection of the skin, most commonly caused by Staphylococcus aureus, occurs frequently and can result in bacteremia. Nontuberculous mycobacterial infections that are usually localized to the skin may disseminate, and guidance on the treatment of these infections is limited. Herpes simplex can be severe, and less common presentations such as herpeti…

Staphylococcus aureus causes a broad spectrum of diseases in humans and animals. It is frequently associated with inflammatory skin disorders such as atopic dermatitis, where it aggravates symptoms. Treatment of S. aureus-associated skin infections with antibiotics is discouraged due to their broad-range deleterious effect on healthy skin microbiota and their ability to promote the development of resistance. Thus, novel S. aureus-specific antibacterial agents are desirable. We constructed two chimeric cell wall-lytic enzymes, Staphefekt SA.100 and XZ.700, which are composed of functional domai

BACKGROUND: High-functional cosmetic products combined with the concept of "treatment" cosmetics are being introduced to the market. Cosmetic products containing a skin-derived microbiome, a three-dimensional (3D) stem cell culture medium, and low-molecular-weight collagen are being introduced, and these products are leading the cosmeceutical market. We aimed to confirm the potential of a 3D stem cell culture medium-containing cream as a skin-whitening and moisturizing product.
AIM: To determine the enhancing effects of a cream containing 3D adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cell-condit

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, recurrent inflammatory skin disease characterized by painful nodules, abscesses, draining tunnels and scarring, with substantial effects on quality of life. Although the therapeutic landscape has expanded with biologics targeting TNF, IL-17A and IL-17A/F, many patients do not achieve sustained disease control, and chronic, draining tunnels remain difficult to treat. Recent data support a more integrated view of HS as a heterogeneous, stage-dependent disease in which inherited susceptibility, modifiable risk factors, epithelial dysfunction, immune act

The COVID-19 pandemic has piqued interest in spontaneous face-touch as a possible route of microbial infection, with eye-touch of particular importance since the ocular surface is a likely portal of human Coronavirus infection. Spontaneous face-touching is a poorly understood, ingrained habit for humans, who engage in this activity on average between 9 to 162 times per hour. Nearly half of spontaneous face-touches involve mucous membranes, and one third of those involve the eyes. The infective sequelae of self-touch are well documented in ophthalmological conditions such as infectious conjunct

Malassezia species are commensal and opportunistic fungi found in human skin. All Malassezia species lack fatty acid synthesis genes and survive by utilizing several lipases to degrade and absorb fatty acids from external lipid sources, but little research has been done on their optimal active pH and temperature. Our skin protects itself from external stimuli and maintains homeostasis, involving bacteria and fungi such as Malassezia species that inhabit our skin. Hence, dysbiosis in the skin microbiome can lead to various skin diseases. The skin's pH is slightly acidic compared to neutral, and…

Periorificial dermatitis is a chronic papulopustular facial dermatitis. Despite being frequently encountered in clinical practice and associated with significant effects on quality of life, its etiology remains incompletely understood, and no therapies are specifically approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for its treatment. In this review, the current mechanistic understandings of periorificial dermatitis pathogenesis are discussed, including the role of inciting factors, skin barrier dysfunction, inflammation, and the microbiome. In addition, we review the diagnostic features of pe
