Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) have increased mortality from chronic inflammatory and cardiovascular diseases. Excess catecholamine exposure contributes to the disease associations of OSA, but the underlying mechanism is unknown. This study tested the hypothesis that increased catecholamine exposure is associated with Enterobacteriaceae abundance in OSA. We compared urinary norepinephrine and the fecal microbiota in 24 patients with OSA and 23 controls. Urinary norepinephrine was elevated in OSA patients, consistent with increased sympathetic activation in those patients. OSA pati

BACKGROUND: The blockage in the upper airway that occurs, while sleeping is represented as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This seem to be a major issue which cause breathing difficulties also increases the risk of severe complications, such as heart attacks and strokes. Therefore, in this proposed study the impact of OSA using brain connectivity analysis under various conditions such as Neelambari, Kapi, and no music has been investigated. The electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings of twelve subjects were acquired in two different conditions, such as listening to music 1 and 2 (Neelambari and K

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep-related breathing disorder. Patients with OSA are at significant risk in the perioperative period. Therefore, improving the management of OSA in the perioperative period has become increasingly important. However, some studies have shown that whether the first-line treatment for OSA, positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy, is effective in the perioperative period remains controversial. This review aims to summarize the latest research advances in the perioperative diagnosis and treatment of OSA, highlighting the role of OSA assessment and treatme

High ambient temperatures are associated with reduced sleep duration and quality, but effects on obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity are unknown. Here we quantify the effect of 24 h ambient temperature on nightly OSA severity in 116,620 users of a Food and Drug Administration-cleared nearable over 3.5 years. Wellbeing and productivity OSA burden for different levels of global warming were estimated. Globally, higher temperatures (99th vs. 25th; 27.3 vs. 6.4 °C) were associated with a 45% higher probability of having OSA on a given night (mean [95% confidence interval]; 1.45 [1.44, 1.47]). W

Asthma and obstructive sleep apnea are complex diseases that significantly impact the health-related quality of life and overall health status of patients. Recent evidence points towards an increased prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea in asthmatic patients, especially in those with severe and uncontrolled asthma, potentially leading to worse asthma control with increased symptoms, diminished health status and more frequent exacerbations. The mechanisms underlying this association are not fully elucidated. However, because obstructive sleep apnea is treatable, screening for sleep disorders s

Severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is linked to adverse cardiovascular outcomes. While continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the standard treatment, mandibular advancement devices (MADs) offer an alternative. This substudy of a randomized trial compared the effectiveness of MADs versus CPAP on 24-h ambulatory blood pressure (BP), sleep-related quality of life, myocardial remodeling, ambulatory heart rhythm, and biomarkers in severe OSA. A total of 144 participants were randomized to MAD (n = 73) or CPAP (n = 71) for 12 mo. Median nightly usage was 5.4 (2.9-6.5) h for the MAD group (≥

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is characterized by repeated airway obstructions leading to intermittent hypoxia and sleep fragmentation. It is a major independent risk factor for atrial fibrillation, with a high prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea among patients with atrial fibrillation. The pathophysiological mechanisms include intermittent hypoxia causing sympathetic activation and atrial remodeling, as well as negative intrathoracic pressure fluctuations that promote arrhythmia. Diagnosis relies on polysomnography and standardized tools such as the SCOPER system. Continuous positive air

BACKGROUND: Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is the most common sleep-related breathing disorder, considered more prevalent in males. Recent evidences suggest that prevalence of OSAS in females is underestimated, with a clinical phenotype marked by sleep fragmentation, poor sleep quality, and neurobehavioral symptoms. We hypothesized that a low arousal threshold (low AT) may be more common in females, which may underline these clinical and polysomnographic differences.
METHODS: In this retrospective multicentric study, 84 females and 93 males with OSA underwent a Home Sleep Apnea Test

BACKGROUND: The relationship between Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and hearing dysfunction has not been comprehensively evaluated. Upper airway obstruction with OSA could lead to anatomical changes to the eustachian tube, thus impacting middle ear function. Additionally, recurrent oxygen desaturation during sleep may impact cochlea function. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the standard treatment for OSA and may impact auditory function by aerating the eustachian tube.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate peripheral hearing function in OSA patients and assess the impact of CPAP therapy on a

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a challenging condition affecting 9% to 38% of people worldwide. However, its prevalence in patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) remains inconclusive. This study aimed to investigate the point-prevalence of OSA in patients with PsA using polysomnography (PSG) the gold-standard diagnostic method for OSA. Diagnosis of OSA was confirmed via standardized PSG utilizing the American Academy of sleep (AASM) recommendations. PsA disease activity was assessed using the disease activity index for psoriatic arthritis (DAPSA) and Health Assessment Questionnaire-Disabili

Failing to address Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) in Down Syndrome (DS) patients can have serious consequences, leading to increased mortality. Moreover, a notable portion of individuals find it challenging to tolerate Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). Therefore, this study aims to share our experiences in treating adult DS patients with moderate to severe OSA who don't tolerate CPAP using various surgical approaches. A retrospective analytical study including 20 DS with moderate to severe/very severe OSA who had no tolerance to Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) was conducted
