Circadian temperature and activity rhythms in unmedicated narcoleptic patients.

Fifteen unmedicated narcoleptic patients with and without sleep-onset REM period (SOREMP) were compared with 16 unmedicated, age-and-sex-matched control subjects with respect to polygraphic, core body temperature and motor activity recordings. Whereas narcoleptic patients with SOREMPs had significantly more quiet wakefulness during sleep, those without SOREMPs had significantly more quiet wakefulness during daytime than the other groups. Compared with that of controls, temperature of both narcoleptic groups showed (a) less rise of temperature curve in the morning, (b) dampening of temperature

An insight of sleep disorders in Africa.

Sleep is a recurrent physiologic and fundamental process in every human being, regardless of ethnicity, gender, birthplace, or occupation; however, the features of sleep are swayed by genetic background and environmental influences. All these factors have an intricate relationship, and arise from a complex and assorted genetic repertoire in the alleles that promote a higher genetic variation in human populations. Sleep disorders have become an uprising public health problem in the modern society; in addition, the correlation between sleep disorders and the development of late chronic diseases

[Sleep disturbances in panic disorders].

The most frequent among the symptoms and syndromes, which are comorbid to panic disorder, are sleep disorders, primarily, insomnia, persisting in 60-80% of patients in this category. Panic disorder and insomnia have bilateral relationships. On one hand, there is a clear correlation between disease severity and accompanying sleep disorders. On the other, the conditionality of sleep disturbances with pathological anxiety has been demonstrated. Treatment of insomnia in panic disorder includes a set of measures aimed at harmonizing the emotional state and stopping insomnia as a syndrome. A compreh

Sex-specific associations between sleep problems and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis activity in children.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Sleep problems are associated with reduced physical and mental health. Altered function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis (HPAA) may be one underlying mechanism. We studied the associations between sleep problems and HPAA activity in children. DESIGN: A cross-sectional epidemiological cohort study. SETTING: Salivary cortisol was sampled throughout one day at home and during the Trier Social Stress Test for Children (TSST-C) in clinic. Sleep disorders were measured with a parent-rated Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children, and sleep duration measured by actigr

Orexin 2 receptor-selective agonist danavorexton improves narcolepsy phenotype in a mouse model and in human patients.

Narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) is a sleep disorder caused by a loss of orexinergic neurons. Narcolepsy type 2 (NT2) is heterogeneous; affected individuals typically have normal orexin levels. Following evaluation in mice, the effects of the orexin 2 receptor (OX2R)-selective agonist danavorexton were evaluated in single- and multiple-rising-dose studies in healthy adults, and in individuals with NT1 and NT2. In orexin/ataxin-3 narcolepsy mice, danavorexton reduced sleep/wakefulness fragmentation and cataplexy-like episodes during the active phase. In humans, danavorexton administered intravenously wa

Vicious cycle: the bidirectional relationship and pathophysiological mechanisms of tinnitus and sleep disturbance.

In sleep medicine and otology, the comorbidity of tinnitus and sleep disturbance may constitute a debilitating vicious cycle: intrusive phantom auditory perceptions disrupt sleep, whereas poor-quality, nonrestorative sleep further intensifies tinnitus-related distress and perceptual prominence, substantially compromising patients' health. Recent neurophysiological and clinical studies suggest that this comorbidity is not a simple causal relationship but may be driven by shared central nervous system mechanisms. Persistent central hyperexcitability, maladaptive neuroplasticity within auditory-l

Sleep Disturbances Associated with Different Systems of the Body: Underlying Mechanisms Involved and Consequences.

Sleep is necessary for long-term health and well-being. Sleep is divided into the rapid eye movement (REM), and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) stages. The normal sleep pattern follows a 90-minute cycle, and within those cycles, the body undergoes a regenerative state, restoring various components used daily. A sleep disorder can be due to multiple factors, i.e., genetic, environmental, and individual factors. Short and long-term effects of sleep deprivation can have harmful effects. The immune system requires sufficient sleep to maintain optimal function, and sleep deprivation leads to the rele

The more unusual sleep disturbances of childhood.

The sleep patterns of children often cause anxiety to their parents. Some disturbances are unusual, and therefore may cause diagnostic difficulties. Sleep walking and night terrors can be confused with epileptic seizures. The sudden sleep of narcolepsy can lead to false accusations, when in fact the episodes are beyond the child's control. The associated phenomena of cataplexy, hypnogogic hallucinations and sleep paralysis can be particularly alarming, especially if they occur in the absence of narcolepsy. The overlap between narcolepsy and the Kleine-Levin syndrome is confirmed. Although of a

Sleep and depression--results from psychobiological studies: an overview.

Disturbances of sleep are typical for most depressed patients and belong to the core symptoms of the disorder. Polysomnographic sleep research has demonstrated that besides disturbances of sleep continuity, in depression sleep is characterized by a reduction of slow wave sleep and a disinhibition of REM sleep, with a shortening of REM latency, a prolongation of the first REM period and increased REM density. These findings have stimulated many sleep studies in depressive patients and patients with other psychiatric disorders. In the meantime, several theoretical models, originating from basic

Nocturia: The circadian voiding disorder.

Nocturia is a prevalent condition of waking to void during the night. The concept of nocturia has evolved from being a symptomatic aspect of disease associated with the prostate or bladder to a form of lower urinary tract disorder. However, recent advances in circadian biology and sleep science suggest that it might be important to consider nocturia as a form of circadian dysfunction. In the current review, nocturia is reexamined with an introduction to sleep disorders and recent findings in circadian biology in an attempt to highlight the importance of rediscovering nocturia as a problem of c
