Diagnostic and therapy of an early-stage primary leiomyosarcoma of the sigmoid colon: A case report.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Primary leiomyosarcoma of the colon is a very rare tumor entity. Because of unspecific findings, diagnostic can be challenging. Most cases are diagnosed in advanced stages with poor overall survival. Unclear histological findings of smooth muscle cell tissue in colon biopsies together with a tumor of the colon wall in computed tomography (CT) imaging should lead to the differential diagnosis of primary colonic leiomyosarcoma and further diagnostic procedures. ABSTRACT: Primary colonic leiomyosarcoma is an extremely rare tumor entity arising from smooth muscle cells in th

Rho/Rho kinase is a key enzyme system involved in the angiotensin II signaling pathway of liver fibrosis and steatosis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The molecular mechanisms underlying the involvement of the renin-angiotensin system in hepatic fibrosis are unclear. Recently, it was reported that a Rho kinase inhibitor prevented fibrosis of various tissues and that the Rho/Rho kinase pathway was involved in the renin-angiotensin system of vascular smooth muscle cells. In this study, the involvement of the Rho/Rho kinase pathway on angiotensin II signaling in liver fibrogenesis and generation of steatosis was investigated. METHODS: Rats were fed a choline-deficient/L-amino acid-defined (CDAA) diet continuously and treate

[Primary epididymal tumors: report of 24 cases].

24 cases of primary epididymal tumors including 23 benign and 1 malignant tumors were treated. In these cases, 66.7% situated at epididymal tail, and 12.5% involved both tail and body. Smooth muscle tumor of one case was bilateral, and adenomatoid tumor of another one was multiple. The symptoms of primary epididymal tumors were mild even absent, so the tumor was easily confused with non-tumorous mass of epididymis. Benign epididymal tumor should be differentiated from tuberculosis, chronic inflammation or granuloma. Besides signs of malignant mass, malignant epididymal tumor usually showed thi…

Intravascular Lobular Capillary Hemangioma (Intravascular Pyogenic Granuloma): A Clinicopathologic Study of 40 Cases.

Intravascular lobular capillary hemangioma (ILCH), or intravascular pyogenic granuloma, is relatively rare and likely underrecognized. We reviewed all ILCH cases from our institution confirmed pathologically from 2006 to 2019. Immunostains for smooth muscle actin and Wilms tumor 1 were performed on all cases and prior immunohistochemical stains were reviewed. Forty cases were identified (22 females; 18 males) with a median age of 53 years (range: 13 to 85 y). Clinically, all were well-circumscribed, stable to slow-growing raised/cystic skin lesions ranging from 1 to 40 mm. Most were located on

A clinicopathological study of inflammatory pseudotumors of the liver with special reference to vessels.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Inflammatory pseudotumor of the liver is rare, and patients with inflammatory pseudotumor frequently undergo unnecessary surgical resection as a result of misdiagnosis of malignancy. In this study, we therefore investigated inflammatory pseudotumor clinicopathologically to clarify its characteristics. METHODOLOGY: Twenty patients including 3 with inflammatory pseudotumor and 17 with various malignant liver tumors were studied. We further investigated tumor vessels by means of immunohistochemistry using monoclonal antibodies against CD34, factor VIII-related antigen and alpha-

Case Report: Bartholin's gland leiomyoma masquerading as a bartholin's cyst: a rare clinical entity and diagnostic challenges.

BACKGROUND: Leiomyomas are benign smooth muscle tumors that most commonly arise in the uterus but may occasionally occur in extra-uterine locations, including the vulva. Vulvar leiomyomas, especially those originating from the Bartholin gland, are uncommon and often misdiagnosed as Bartholin's cysts or abscesses, leading to diagnostic challenges. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 44-year-old female with a longstanding, slowly enlarging right vulvar mass initially presumed to be a Bartholin's cyst. The patient had no significant past medical history, no allergies, no family history of…

Primary cutaneous perivascular epithelioid cell tumor: a clinicopathological and molecular reappraisal.

BACKGROUND: Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is a rare neoplasm of uncertain histogenesis with a mixed myomelanocytic immunophenotype, rarely arising in the skin (primary cutaneous PEComa [pcPEComa]). OBJECTIVE: We analyzed the clinicopathological features of 8 pcPEComas, assayed for DNA copy number changes and for initiating mutations common in melanocytic neoplasms. METHODS: pcPEComas were evaluated using immunohistochemistry, comparative genomic hybridization, and DNA sequencing. RESULTS: pcPEComas were erythematous nodules, mostly in the lower extremities of women (5/8), com

Sclerosing Perivascular Epithelioid Cell Tumor of the Uterus: A Rare Entity Posing Diagnostic Challenge.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is a rare mesenchymal uterine tumor and the histological variant, sclerosing PEComa is exceedingly rare. Sclerosing PEComas preferentially occur in the retroperitoneum and occurrence in the uterine corpus is seldom seen. These tumors pose a diagnostic challenge and need distinction from morphological mimickers such as epithelioid smooth muscle tumors, endometrial stromal sarcoma, and metastatic carcinoma. Accurate diagnosis can be established coupling histomorphology with immunostaining. The distinction from other entities is of prime importance con…

Transdifferentiations and heterogeneity in the stromal niches of uterine leiomyomas.

Uterine leiomyomas, also known as uterine fibroids (UFs), are benign smooth muscle cells tumors, the most frequent tumors in women. Even though UFs are monoclonal tumors, they contain a heterogeneous and versatile cells population. There are scarce proofs about the processes of transdifferentiation that might occur in UFs, modify the tumor microenvironment and support blood and lymph vessels formation. The stromal niches of the UFs harbor cells with angiogenic∕lymphangiogenic, as well as with vasculogenic∕lymphvasculogenic potential, which belong to a phenotypic continuum between the endotheli

A Fast-growing Benign Metastasizing Leiomyoma Mimicking Malignancy.

We herein report a rare case of fast-growing benign metastasizing leiomyoma. A 52-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with abnormal chest shadows. Chest computed tomography showed well-circumscribed cystic tumors. Because malignancy could not be completely distinguished in fast-growing tumors, video-assisted thoracic surgery was performed. The pathological findings revealed many cysts and the proliferation of smooth muscle cells. According to the Stanford criteria, the tumor was diagnosed as benign metastasizing leiomyoma. One possible reason for the fast growth of the tumor was enlarg

Subungual glomangiomyoma - a case report.

Glomus tumors are benign neoplasms that develop from normal glomus bodies. These tumors are most commonly found in the nail bed of the hands and are characterized by point tenderness, and temperature sensitivity. Histologically, they are classified into three groups, the least common is glomangiomyoma, which is a variant distinguished by its predominant smooth muscle cellular content. This report describes a patient with a subungual glomangiomyoma that was surgically excised with a favorable outcome. The tumor is unusual for this location; a location common for typical glomus tumors. It presen

Orbital leiomyoma: histopathologic and immunohistochemical findings of a rare tumor.

A 51-year-old man was referred for evaluation of a right orbital hemangioma. Ophthalmologic examination was unremarkable except for 1 mm of proptosis OD. CT revealed a 10-mm lesion with evidence of growth from 6 to 10 mm within a year. The tumor did not compromise other orbital structures. An excisional biopsy was performed. On the basis of the histopathologic and immunohistochemical findings, the diagnosis of orbital leiomyoma was established. Orbital leiomyoma is a slow-growing tumor that can be located anywhere in the orbit. Posterior tumors are believed to originate from smooth muscle cell

[A case report of a paraesophageal bronchogenic cyst and an esophageal cyst].

There are relatively few paraesophageal bronchogenic and esophageal cysts in mediastinal tumors. It is often difficult to distinguish between these cysts. Case 1: 11 year old, male with no symptoms. An abnormal tumor shadow was revealed by chest roentgenogram. Before operating, CT, MRI and other laboratory tests were suggested that the tumor was neurogenic. A cyst with a pedicle connected to the esophageal muscle layer was found during the operation. Pathological examination confirmed a bronchogenic cyst lined with cartilage. Case 2: 38 year old female with epigastralgia. Upper gastrointestina

Leiomyosarcoma of the broad ligament with osteoclast-like giant cells and rhabdoid cells.

In this report we document an unusual co-mingling of rhabdoid and osteoclast like giant cells in a leiomyosarcoma arising from the broad ligament. A 38-year old female was found to have a rapidly enlarging adnexal mass which was resected and histologically found to be a leiomyosarcoma with marked pleomorphism. Completion surgery, shortly thereafter showed spread to the ileum, which was also resected. The tumor now showed a prominent population of both osteoclast-like giant cells and rhabdoid cells. Interestingly, the immunophenotype of the tumor had also changed with complete loss of desmin, c

[Myolipoma arising from the renal capsule: a case report].

A 53-year-old female visited us with an asymptomatic renal mass, which was incidentally found on abdominal ultrasonography (US). US showed a heterogeneous renal mass measuring 5 cm in diameter. Computed tomorraphy and magnetic resonance imaging showed that the tumor was mixed with muscle and fat tissue, faintly enhanced, and located at the lower portion of the left kidney. Although renal angiomyolipoma (AML) was suspected from these findings, we could not rule out a malignant tumor. Therefore, she underwent a laparoscopic partial nephrectomy. Histopathological examination revealed the tumor co

Primary leiomyosarcoma of the anterior mediastinum.

Primary mediastinal leiomyosarcoma are extremely rare tumors, which develop from smooth muscle, usually in the esophagus or main vessels. Very few cases have been reported in the literature and only two of these developed from small vessels in the soft tissue of the anterior mediastinum. We report on a 45-year-old man who presented with a huge anterior mediastinal tumor. The tumor was surgically removed with right thoracotomy and the diagnosis of well-differentiated leiomyosarcoma was established. It probably originated from the anterior mediastinal tissue, so at operation a continuity was not

Pulmonary Leiomyoma in a Post-hysterectomy Patient: A Diagnostic Challenge.

Pulmonary leiomyoma is a rare benign smooth muscle tumor that may present as a solitary lung mass and mimic malignancy. In women with a prior history of uterine leiomyoma and hysterectomy, the possibility of benign metastasizing leiomyoma (BML) must be considered. We report a case of a middle-aged woman with a prior hysterectomy for uterine leiomyoma who presented with an endobronchial tumor, suspicious for malignancy. The patient underwent lobectomy, and histopathological evaluation confirmed the leiomyoma of the lung. This case highlights the diagnostic dilemma posed by such lesions and unde…

Malignant Transformation of a Leiomyoma Originating From the Inferior Turbinate.

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a malignant tumor of smooth muscle origin that is most frequently found in the uterus and gastrointestinal tract. LMS involving the head and neck is rare, accounting for only 2.3% of all cases. In this region, LMS tends to be more aggressive and is associated with a poorer prognosis compared to its gastrointestinal counterparts. Furthermore, LMS of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses is extremely rare. Here, we present a case of malignant transformation of a leiomyoma originating from the inferior turbinate, which was successfully treated with endoscopic tumor resect

Primary Gastric Leiomyosarcoma: A Rare Case.

Gastric leiomyosarcoma is extremely rare. In this paper, we present a case of primary gastric leiomyosarcoma located in the fundus/cardia region. The tumoral spindle cells show diffusely moderate nuclear atypia, with focally marked atypia and rare mitotic figures. Additionally, the tumoral cells exhibit positive immunoreactivity to smooth muscle actin and desmin while testing negative for CD117 (c-kit). The tumor was successfully resected through a laparoscopic partial gastrectomy, and the patient experienced a full recovery. There has been no recurrence or metastatic tumor detection during th
