Effects of multisession cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation with cognitive training on sociocognitive functioning and brain dynamics in autism: A double-blind, sham-controlled, randomized EEG study.

BACKGROUND: Few treatment options are available for targeting core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The development of treatments that target common neural circuit dysfunctions caused by known genetic defects, namely, disruption of the excitation/inhibition (E/I) balance, is promising. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is capable of modulating the E/I balance in healthy individuals, yet its clinical and neurobiological effects in ASD remain elusive. OBJECTIVE: This double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled trial investigated the effects of multisession cathodal prefron

The effect of a single-session attention modification program on response to a public-speaking challenge in socially anxious individuals.

Research suggests that individuals with social anxiety show an attention bias for threat-relevant information However, few studies have directly manipulated attention to examine its effect on anxiety. In the current article, the authors tested the hypothesis that an attention modification program would be effective in reducing anxiety response and improving performance on a public-speaking challenge. Socially anxious participants completed a probe detection task by identifying letters (E or F) replacing one member of a pair of faces (neutral or disgust). The authors trained attention by includ

Psychosocial correlates of cancer relapse and survival: a literature review.

This article reviews literature on the psychosocial correlates of cancer relapse and survival from 1979 through 1995. The factors studied were structured according to a theoretical model of coping with cancer. Reviewed studies have shown that factors most frequently evaluated were depression, anxiety, hopelessness/helplessness, hostility, marital status and social involvement. Mainly inconsistent results were found. The strongest evidence for a relationship between psychosocial variables and prognosis was found for social involvement/social support; in 7 of 15 studies a positive relationship w

Mediators of the effects of an HIV prevention advocacy training intervention on prevention advocacy among persons living with HIV in Uganda.

Pathways through which advocacy training enhances engagement in advocacy among persons living with HIV (PLWH) are not well understood. In a secondary analysis from a randomized controlled trial of a peer advocacy training intervention for PLWH, we examined mediators of intervention effects on HIV prevention advocacy (i.e., encouraging others to engage in HIV protective behaviors) across members of their social network. A sample of 210 PLWH (105 in each of the intervention and control arms) provided information about their advocacy to their social network members at baseline, and 6-, 12-, and 1

Maltreatment, social support, and mental well-being: A longitudinal observation study of youth in five low- and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Addressing the growing child and adolescent mental health crisis is a global priority, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Although the literature demonstrates that experiencing maltreatment may negatively impact mental well-being and experiencing social support may positively impact mental well-being, the relationship between mental well-being and co-occurring maltreatment and social support is unknown. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relationship between maltreatment, social support, and mental well-being. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Study data is from th

Characterization of Courtesy Stigma Perceived by Parents of Overweight Children with Bardet-Biedl Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: A child's obesity is generally perceived by the public to be under the control of the child's parents. While the health consequences of childhood obesity are well understood, less is known about psychological and social effects of having an obese child on parents. We set out to characterize stigma and courtesy stigma experiences surrounding obesity among children with Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS), a multisystem genetic disorder, and their parents. METHODS: Twenty-eight parents of children with BBS participated in semi-structured interviews informed by social stigmatization theory,

Neurodevelopmental outcome after surgery for acyanotic congenital heart disease.

BACKGROUND: Inconsistent results on neuropsychological outcome in patients treated for acyanotic congenital heart disease (aCHD) questioned the clinical relevance of possible neurobehavioral sequelae in this group. This study was designed to objectify the neuropsychological profile and evaluate associations with medical data. METHODS: Patients with a corrected atrial or ventricular septal defect, ASD-II or VSD, (n=46; mean age 9 years, 2 months) and a matched control group were submitted to an intelligence test (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, third edition, Dutch version) and evalu

Human dimensions of Asiatic black bear presence in Akita City, Japan.

Human-bear interactions with Asiatic black bears (Ursus thibetanus) are increasing in Japan. Examining public perceptions towards bears and bear management is timely with shifting lethal control legislation and rapid spread of negative human-bear interactions throughout Japan. Akita City is one site of recent upsurge in social conflict triggered by increasing human-bear conflict. We used key informant interviews and collected opinion data through semi-structured interviews with 35 Akita City residents; the interviews identified depopulation and rural land abandonment as important perceived soc

The Impact of Social Vulnerability and Race on Colorectal Cancer Screening.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading contributor to morbidity and mortality in the United States, with documented disparities in screening rates across racial lines. This study examined the intersection of race and social vulnerability in CRC screening rates. We examined 117,424 patients eligible for CRC screening in New York State. We assessed CRC screening among individuals aged 45-80 based on Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set guidelines. We used Social Vulnerability Indices (SVIs) geocoded to each patient's census track. We employed log-binomial multivariate regression model

Disease-specific roles of multidimensional apathy in linking cognitive and social functioning across neurodegenerative diseases.

BACKGROUND: Apathy is a multidimensional neuropsychiatric syndrome involving cognitive, emotional, and behavioral domains. Cognitive impairment and apathy are both associated with reduced social functioning, but how specific apathy dimensions relate cognition to social functioning across neurodegenerative diseases remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study compared multidimensional apathy profiles across Parkinson's disease (PD), Alzheimer's disease-like mild cognitive impairment (AD-like MCI), and normal controls (NC), and investigated whether specific apathy dimensions mediate the association b

Theories for interventions to reduce physical and verbal abuse: A mixed methods review of the health and social care literature to inform future maternity care.

Despite global attention, physical and verbal abuse remains prevalent in maternity and newborn healthcare. We aimed to establish theoretical principles for interventions to reduce such abuse. We undertook a mixed methods systematic review of health and social care literature (MEDLINE, SocINDEX, Global Index Medicus, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Sept 29th 2020 and March 22nd 2022: no date or language restrictions). Papers that included theory were analysed narratively. Those with suitable outcome measures were meta-analysed. We used convergence results synthesis to integrate findings. In September

Social and economic impacts of congenital Zika syndrome in Brazil: Study protocol and rationale for a mixed-methods study.

Global concern broke out in late 2015 as thousands of children in Brazil were born with microcephaly, which was quickly linked to congenital infection with Zika virus (ZIKV). ZIKV is now known to cause a wider spectrum of severe adverse outcomes-congenital Zika syndrome (CZS)-and also milder impairments. This study aimed to explore the social and economic impacts of CZS in Brazil. Data was collected through mixed methods across two settings: Recife City and Jaboatão dos Guararapes in Pernambuco State (the epicentre of the epidemic), and the city of Rio de Janeiro (where reports of ZIKV infecti

Determination of Sexual Attitude, Sexual Self-Consciousness, and Sociocultural Status in Women With and Without Lifelong Vaginismus: A Case-Control Study.

Vaginismus is a sexual dysfunction occurring in females presented as a contraction of the muscles around the vagina as a reflex, causing the failure of vaginal penetration. Although many psychological, social, and cultural factors that may cause vaginismus have been suggested, its underlying mechanisms are not clear. The aim of this study was to determine the sexual attitude, sexual self-awareness, and sociocultural status of women with and without lifelong vaginismus. This is a case-control study. A total of 148 women were included in the study: 74 women with a lifelong vaginismus diagnosis a

Can findings from randomized controlled trials of social skills training in autism spectrum disorder be generalized? The neglected dimension of external validity.

Systematic reviews have traditionally focused on internal validity, while external validity often has been overlooked. In this study, we systematically reviewed determinants of external validity in the accumulated randomized controlled trials of social skills group interventions for children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder. We extracted data clustered into six overarching themes: source population, included population, context, treatment provider, treatment intervention, and outcome. A total of 15 eligible randomized controlled trials were identified. The eligible population was
