Recognition of facial affect by children and adolescents diagnosed with social phobia.

This study compared the ability of children with social phobia and children with no psychiatric disorder to accurately judge facial affect. Fifteen children and adolescents with social phobia and 14 control children were asked to identify emotions depicted in slides from the Pictures of Facial Affect. In addition, they rated their level of anxiety on a pictorial Likert scale prior to and upon completion of the facial recognition task. The results indicated that children with social phobia had significantly poorer facial affect recognition skills than normal controls and reported greater anxiet

Social Cognition in Neurodegenerative Disorders.

Social cognition, including theory of mind, empathy, social perception, and behavior, is crucial for interpersonal relationships and social functioning. Impairments in social cognition have also been recognized in neurodegenerative disorders including frontotemporal dementia, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease. This review defines social cognition components, summarizes assessment tools, and evaluates their clinical applicability in these disorders. Despite research, the incorporation of social cognition assessments into clinical practice remains limited. Developing standardized, val

Advancing Medical Education in Sex- and Gender-Based Mechanisms of Disease: Current Educator Knowledge and Future Directions.

Sex and gender influence disease mechanisms and outcomes, yet their integration into medical curricula remains limited. Faculty knowledge and confidence are essential for effective incorporation. This study assessed baseline sex- and gender-specific health (SGSH) knowledge, attitudes, and comfort among medical school educators and delivered a multi-format faculty development intervention. A survey adapted from prior SGSH assessments was distributed to medical school block leaders before the intervention, measuring SGSH knowledge, comfort differentiating sex and gender, awareness of SGSH resour

Communication Barriers and Facilitators to Specialist Pediatric Palliative Care Involvement in Pediatric Oncology Settings Across Canada.

OBJECTIVES: To examine how healthcare provider communication shapes referral, acceptance and ongoing integration of specialist pediatric palliative care (SPPC). METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted across four pediatric cancer centers in Canada. Sixty-six healthcare providers working in oncology and palliative care settings participated in in-depth interviews. Participants included physicians, nurses, psycho-social clinicians and other members of the interprofessional health team. Transcripts were analyzed using iterative, inductive coding based on the Grounded Theory method. RESULTS:

Listening to the multidisciplinary care team: exploring the pediatric palliative care needs in advanced chronic kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric palliative care (PPC) aims to improve the quality of life for children with life-limiting conditions, such as advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD), from the time of diagnosis. However, PPC is not commonly integrated into routine pediatric nephrology care. This study explores the perspectives and experiences of healthcare providers (HCPs) to better understand the experiences and specific barriers related to PPC integration for children and adolescents with advanced CKD. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study with 23 HCPs, including nurses, psychologists, social worker

Art therapy interventions and developmental outcomes in children with ASD: a systematic review.

Although the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has increased globally, evidence-based interventions that address both emotional and social dimensions in low-cost, real-world settings remain limited. Art therapy, characterized by nonverbal and multisensory engagement, has been applied in clinical and educational contexts for children with ASD. However, recent studies have largely emphasized overall outcomes, with limited synthesis of intervention processes and research trends. This systematic review followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Mechanisms related to psychological well-being in older women with chronic illnesses: age and disease comparisons.

The influence of type of illness (breast cancer versus osteoarthritis) and age on physical health and functioning, self-system interpretive mechanisms, and women's psychological well-being were examined. Self-system interpretive mechanisms are considered mediators of the effects of physical health on psychological well-being and include social comparisons, social integration, and illness perceptions. Young-old (aged 60-74) and old-old (75 +) women, diagnosed with osteoarthritis (N = 102) or breast cancer (N = 86), who volunteered for the study were interviewed using structured self-report scal…

Microglia-mediated Perineuronal nets loss contributes to social memory deficit in male mice after repeated neonatal sevoflurane exposure.

BACKGROUND: Repeated early-life exposure to general anesthetics might affect social behavior. Perineuronal nets (PNNs), which enwrap around parvalbumin (PV) interneurons and support their function, are crucial for social memory. Given that microglia contribute to PNN remodeling and are responsive to anesthetic exposure, we hypothesized that repeated neonatal sevoflurane exposure impairs social memory via microglia-mediated PNN degradation. METHODS: Mice were exposed to 2.5 % sevoflurane for 2 h daily during postnatal days 7-9. At postnatal day 28, we evaluated social behavior, PNN integrity,

Adapting TikTok and behavioral economics for youth-centered HIV prevention and PrEP education in the Philippines.

Social media platforms such as TikTok offer new opportunities for youth-centered HIV prevention and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) education. Prior evidence shows that young people respond best to short, authentic, and gain-framed messaging. This study aims to contextualize these findings within the Philippine setting and propose strategies that align with youth behavior, local policies, and national health priorities. Relevant literature on behavioral economics, HIV prevention, and digital engagement among Filipino youth and cis-MSM was reviewed and interpreted alongside existing education p

Interventions to Address the Needs of Adults With Postconcussion Syndrome: A Systematic Review.

Postconcussion syndrome (PCS) affects physical, cognitive, and emotional functioning. Existing reviews of interventions to address PCS are limited to psychological and rehabilitation interventions and to child and adolescent populations. We conducted a systematic review integrating current evidence about interventions for adults with PCS. The inclusion criteria were intervention studies of adults (ages ≥18 yr) with PCS that evaluated recovery from PCS symptoms and focused on functional outcomes; 10 studies met the criteria. Included studies demonstrated medium to high levels of evidence and in

The Enigmatic temporal pole: a review of findings on social and emotional processing.

The function of the anterior-most portion of the temporal lobes, the temporal pole, is not well understood. Anatomists have long considered it part of an extended limbic system based on its location posterior to the orbital frontal cortex and lateral to the amygdala, along with its tight connectivity to limbic and paralimbic regions. Here we review the literature in both non-human primates and humans to assess the temporal pole's putative role in social and emotional processing. Reviewed findings indicate that it has some role in both social and emotional processes, including face recognition

Commentary: Enhancing Health Data for Systems Change to Prevent Homelessness in Canada.

Housing is a critical social determinant of health, yet until recently, hospitals did not routinely collect data on homelessness. National homelessness coding mandates have brought attention to an often poorly represented issue, but largely reaffirm existing evidence - homelessness is a growing public health issue. Governments and health systems should not just document the ongoing crisis but also leverage administrative data to prevent homelessness. Policies aimed at early detection, cross-sectoral data integration and affordable housing are needed to address the upstream drivers of homelessn

In support of point-of-care social needs screening: The effects of five social determinants on the health of children with chronic diseases in British Columbia.

BACKGROUND: Prior to introducing social needs screening into our subspecialty clinics, we first wanted to understand the health effects of the major social challenges facing children with chronic diseases in British Columbia. METHODS: Using a strict prospective methodology, avoiding use of health databases and proxy end points, we studied the effects of five social health determinants (distance from care, family income, gender, ethnicity, caregiver education), on health outcomes in three groups of children with chronic diseases: cystic fibrosis (CF), type 1 diabetes (T1D), chronic kidney dise

Multi-session CBM-I for social anxiety: examining psychopathology, cognitive, neural, and psychophysiological effects in a randomized controlled trial.

Cognitive Bias Modification - Interpretation (CBM-I) aims to alter maladaptive interpretations in social anxiety, yet effects are often small and outcome measures are diverse. Although CBM-I has shown promise, its underlying mechanisms remain unclear and integration with psychophysiological and neural measures has been limited. In this randomized controlled trial, eighty-eight participants with high levels of social anxiety completed two lab sessions, an online training in between, and online follow-up. Participants filled out questionnaires, completed interpretation bias tasks, and underwent

Evaluating the effect of social mobility on the incidence of HIV/AIDS in low-income populations: A dynamic microsimulation study with large cohort data.

The control of the HIV/AIDS epidemic remains a significant challenge for public health in Brazil, a country marked by profound social inequalities. In this study, we aimed to use the integration of large data analyses with microsimulation models to evaluate the effect of alternative income-based social mobility policies on AIDS incidence, both in the overall population and in specific vulnerability groups. We created a dynamic microsimulation model of a cohort of 1 million individuals starting from a large dataset of low-income people in 2012 in Brazil, integrated with input parameters from th
