The impact of EC+ as a multimodal support in intervention for children with autism spectrum disorder: a technological alternative.

PURPOSE: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Enhancing Communication Plus (EC+), an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) technological support system, in improving communication, social interaction, and behavior in children with Level 3 autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and complex communication needs. The intervention combines EC+ with aided augmented input to enhance expressive and receptive communication. METHODS: A quasi-experimental design was conducted over 16 weeks with 18 children aged 6 to 12 diagnosed with Level 3 ASD. Participants engaged in therapy sessions u…

Stimulating social interest: The translational value of basic investigations into frontal cortex function.

Fan et al. use electrical stimulation during a novel social interaction paradigm to demonstrate a role for the orbitofrontal cortex in directing social attention. Their results shed new light on the basic functions of the orbitofrontal cortex and have translational value in understanding circuit modulation for psychiatric disorders.

Safety behaviors and positive emotions in social anxiety disorder.

The present study examined contextual factors that affect safety behavior use as well as positive emotions when using safety behaviors among individuals with SAD. Eighty-eight participants took part in the study, half (n = 44) met diagnostic criteria for SAD and half (n = 44) did not meet criteria for SAD. Participants completed a 21-day experience sampling methodology (ESM) measurement in which they reported on daily social interactions, safety behavior use, and emotions. Using multilevel linear modeling we found that both individuals with and without SAD used more safety behaviors when inter…

You changed my mind: Immediate and enduring impacts of social emotion regulation.

As social creatures, our relationships with other people have tremendous downstream impacts on health and well-being. However, we still know surprisingly little about how our social interactions regulate how we think and feel through life's challenges. Getting help from other people to change how one thinks about emotional events-known as "social reappraisal"-can be more effective in downregulating negative affect than reappraising on one's own, but it is unknown whether this regulatory boost from social support persists when people face the same events alone in the future. In a preregistered …

[Social Support or Social Contagion? How Patients with Eating Disorders in Inpatient Settings Affect Each Other].

OBJECTIVE: Living with others can provide social support for people with eating disorders. However, peer contagion is possible if competition arises and patients try to outdo each other in their symptomatic behavior. METHOD: In 2 qualitative studies, a total of 19 female patients were interviewed about their experiences in an inpatient setting. RESULTS: The qualitative data analysis of the problem-focused, semi-structured interviews shows opportunities but also risks; especially in groups exclusively for eating disorders. DISCUSSION: It is important to avoid labeling and focusing on symptom

A social competence intervention for young children with high functioning autism and Asperger syndrome: a pilot study.

The key features of Asperger Syndrome (AS) and high functioning autism (HFA) include marked and sustained impairment in social interactions. A multi-session, small group program was developed to increase social perception based on the assumption perceptual or interpretive problems underlying these social difficulties. Additionally, the group format espoused a play therapy orientation and the use of sociodramatic play was the primary therapeutic modality used. Qualitative analyses of the data resulted in an explanation of the key changes in social interactions that took place through the course…

Social Experience Is Sufficient to Modulate Sleep Need of Drosophila without Increasing Wakefulness.

Organisms quickly learn about their surroundings and display synaptic plasticity which is thought to be critical for their survival. For exa … observed in males from three different "wild type" strains of D. melanogaster. Previous studies on social interaction mediated sleep-enhancement presumed 'waking experience' during the interaction to be the primary underlying cause; however, we found sleep-enhancement to occur without any significant increase in wakefulness. Furthermore, while sleep-enhancement due …

[Oxytocin versus dopamine: The delicate balance between social bonding and addiction].

Social behaviour is fundamental to survival and adaptation, relying on complex, interacting neurobiological systems in which the neuropeptid … lant-seeking behaviour. This imbalance impairs social motivation and bonding. Importantly, positive social interactions can serve as competing natural rewards that prevent, and in some cases reverse, psychostimulant-seeking behaviours, highlighting the therapeutic potential of targeting OT-DA pathways. Who infects whom? Social networks and tuberculosis transmission in wild meerkats.

Transmission of infectious diseases is strongly influenced by who contacts whom. Despite the global distribution of tuberculosis (TB) in free-living wild mammal populations, little is known of the mechanisms of social transmission of Mycobacterium bovis between individuals. Here, I use a network approach to examine for correlations between five distinct types of intra- and intergroup social interaction and changes in TB status of 110 wild meerkats (Suricata suricatta) in five social groups over two years. Contrary to predictions, the most socially interactive animals were not at highest risk o…

Attentional territories: The influence of gaze and interpersonal distance in the navigation of public space.

Human gaze is a potent social signal; it communicates attention, intention and social engagement, and allows observers to infer not only where others are attending but also how they are socially related. Although gaze has been extensively studied in direct social interaction, far less is known about how it shapes the perceptions and actions of uninvolved observers in shared environments. Here, we investigate whether mutual gaze creates an 'attentional territory' that third parties implicitly respect. In a large-scale field study across four university campuses in Europe and Canada (N = 4680 pe…

[Synapse maturation and autism: learning from neuroligin model mice].

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairments in social interaction, communication, and restricted and repetitive behavior. Synaptic defects have been implicated in autism; nevertheless, the cause is still largely unknown. A mutation that substitutes cysteine for arginine at residue 451 of Neuroligin-3 (R451C) is the first monogenic mutation identified in idiopathic autism patients. To study the relationship between this mutation and autism, we generated knock-in mice that recapitulated this mutation. The knock-in mice were born and grew up normally without showing any m…

The effects of intellectual functioning and autism severity on outcome of early behavioral intervention for children with autism.

UNLABELLED: This study assessed the relation between pre-intervention variables (cognition, socialization and communication) to outcome in young children with autism. METHOD: Twenty five children with autism (20-32 months) were enrolled in intensive behavior intervention. The children were divided into groups based on their IQ scores and on the severity of their social interaction and communication deficits [per autism diagnostic observation schedule (ADOS) scores]. Six developmental-behavioral domains including, imitation, receptive language, expressive language, nonverbal communication skil…

Social withdrawal and hippocampal volume among adolescents at clinical high risk for psychosis and healthy comparisons: The moderating role of neighborhood residential stability.

OBJECTIVE: Hippocampal volume (HV) reductions are a nonspecific marker of psychiatric vulnerability, including risk for psychosis. However, the behavioral and contextual factors that shape this association remain poorly understood. This study examined whether social withdrawal, a behavioral risk factor for psychosis, is associated with HV in adolescents, and whether neighborhood residential stability moderates this relationship. METHODS: Participants included 166 youth at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR-P) and 41 healthy comparisons (ages 12-19, 40.1% female, 51.2% White non-Hispanic) f

Differential Effects of Cerebellar tDCS on Sequential Mentalizing.

The cerebellum has been increasingly recognized for its role in social cognition, particularly in mentalizing processes. A way to measure mentalizing is the picture sequencing task, a well-established measure of social action sequencing during mentalizing of other’s beliefs. Recent studies have shown that cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation can affect social sequence processing in adults, however, the effects of different types of stimulation remain unclear. Therefore, in this study, we examined the effects of a novel and more focal montage of cerebellar tDCS on the picture sequ

Abnormal social behaviors in young and adult rats neonatally infected with Borna disease virus.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have been the focus of a great deal of research and clinical speculation. This intense interest relates to b … el of ASD based on neonatal Borna disease virus (BDV) infection and present new data about abnormal social interaction in adult BDV-infected rats. We found that neonatal BDV infection profoundly affected social behaviors in adult rats. Compared to the control rats, both 90- and 180-day-old infected rats spent less time in active social interaction and more time in f …

Social anxiety in young gay men.

Based on the assumption that sexual minority individuals are particularly sensitive to the possible rejection of others, the present study examined the occurrence and correlates of social anxiety symptomatology in gay and heterosexual men. Eighty-seven heterosexual and 87 gay undergraduate men between the ages of 18 and 24 completed common measures of social anxiety, self-esteem, boyhood gender conformity, and a modified S-R Inventory of Anxiousness. Results reveal that gay men reported greater fear of negative evaluation and social interaction anxiety and lower self-esteem than heterosexual m…
