Malnutrition in a Modernising Economy: The Changing Aetiology and Epidemiology of Malnutrition in an African Kingdom, Buganda c.1940-73.

The ecological fecundity of the northern shore of Lake Victoria was vital to Buganda's dominance of the interlacustrine region during the pre-colonial period. Despite this, protein-energy malnutrition was notoriously common throughout the twentieth century. This paper charts changes in nutritional illness in a relatively wealthy, food-secure area of Africa during a time of vast social, economic and medical change. In Buganda at least, it appears that both the causation and epidemiology of malnutrition moved away from the endemic societal causes described by early colonial doctors and became in

[Bladder exstrophy and quality of life].

The primary objectives of operative management of exstrophy of the urinary bladder are to obtain secure closure of pelvic girdle and abdominal wall, unimpeded voiding, urinary continence, absence of reflux, preservation of renal function, functional and cosmetically acceptable external genitalia, and the absence of malignancy. These objectives cannot be fully achieved by only one of the established procedures such as functional bladder closure, internal or external urinary diversion and epispadias repair. Early individual and creative surgical management including changing concepts when needed

Development and preliminary validation of the South Wales Social Well-being Scale (SWSWBS).

BACKGROUND: Physical, mental and social components of well-being are known to be important to health. However, research on well-being often focuses on physical and mental well-being with little attention paid to social well-being. This research aims to develop and preliminarily validate the South Wales Social Well-being Scale (SWSWBS) to measure social well-being. METHODS: A non-experimental and cross-sectional design was applied with two phases: scale development and preliminary validation. Initially, 24 items were drawn from a Group Concept Mapping study exploring the concept of social well

Patient-reported quality of life in people living with HIV in Romania: a cross-sectional PROM-based study.

BACKGROUND: In Romania, people living with HIV represent heterogeneous cohorts shaped by distinct epidemiological and social contexts. While antiretroviral therapy (ART) has markedly improved survival, quality-of-life (QoL) encompasses broader dimensions not fully captured by clinical indicators. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) offer a valuable approach to understanding these dimensions in routine care. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter, cross-sectional study using the OCTAVE PROM to assess patient-reported health-related QoL among people with HIV in Romania. The self-completed qu

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Postpartum Depression Among Women in Low-Income Developing Rural Areas: A Cross-Sectional Study in China.

Background: Postpartum depression (PPD) significantly affects the welfare of mothers, infants, families, and communities. Mothers in rural areas often face low incomes, poor social security, low education levels, and inadequate medical services. These specific cultural, social, and economic aspects have led to a worsening of PPD in rural areas. However, the current situation of PPD among women in rural areas of China is still insufficiently explored. Aim: This study aims to explore the prevalence and risk factors of PPD among women in low-income developing rural areas of China. Methods: A cros…

The Rhode Island transitions clinic: connections to social and healthcare services after release from incarceration.

BACKGROUND: After release from incarceration, individuals are rarely connected to primary care or to social services despite bearing a disproportionate burden of poor health (e.g., chronic illness) and structural determinants of health (e.g., housing instability). The Rhode Island Transitions Clinic (RITC) works to fill this gap, particularly for patients with complex needs, by linking individuals to primary care and social services. However, prior work has not formally assessed how successful the TCN is at connecting patients to social services. Our objective was to assess the relationship be

Seasonality and predictors of childhood stunting and wasting in drought-prone areas in Ethiopia: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Over centuries, Ethiopia has experienced severe famines and periods of serious drought, and malnutrition remains a major public health problem. The aims of this study were to estimate seasonal variations in child stunting and wasting, and identify factors associated with both forms of child malnutrition in drought-prone areas. METHODS: This cohort study was conducted among a random sample of 909 children in rural southern Ethiopia. The same children were followed for 1 year (2017-2018) with quarterly repeated measurements of their outcomes: height-for-age and weight

Appetite and falls: Old age and lived experiences.

Falling among older adults is a well-known public health problem but the association between falling and appetite is seldom studied although … on whom the participants were dependent. Personal relationships and mutual dependencies may ensure social security in lives characterised by contingency and maintain influence in daily life. Falling is both a dramatic and a trivial incident where life and death could be at stake. From this perspective, connectedness was prominent in all fall stories. The quest f …

Social Support Mediates the Association between Attachment Style and Psychological Distress during COVID-19 in Israel.

Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the relationships between attachment style, social support, and psychological distress (i.e., depression and anxiety) during the COVID-19 lockdown of the third wave in Israel. Specifically, we examined whether social support mediates the well-documented relationship between attachment style and psychological distress. Methods: An online survey was administered from 3 January to 6 February, 2021, while a strict lockdown was in place. The sample included 288 Israelis ranging between the ages of 18−78, recruited by snowball sampling. Psychological distres

Mediation of Latinx health status disparities during the COVID-19 pandemic by social determinants of health.

PURPOSE: The hypothesis that health status disparities exist because of high levels of social disadvantages, the Social Determinants of Health - Health Disparities (SDOH-HD) hypothesis by Ramírez García [1], was investigated among adults (N = 1,833) attending SARS-CoV-2 testing events at 71 community sites. METHODS: A Multilevel Structural Equation Model (CFI = 1.0, SRMRs ≤ 0.03), with cross-sectional self-reported data, operationalized health status with latent individual level and latent community site level variables. At the individual level, health variables met full or partial metric equ

From health protection to labor incentive: health and economic impacts of Medical Financial Assistance in rural China.

Medical Financial Assistance (MFA), a key safety net for low-income groups in China, may exert incentive or welfare dependency effects on non-farm labor supply, an issue critical to assessing the effectiveness of medical security policies. Using two-wave household panel data, this study employs two-way fixed effects models to evaluate MFA's impact on the non-farm labor supply (participation rate and working time) of low-income rural households, distinguishing between the effects of eligibility attainment and increased assistance amounts. The results show that: (1) MFA eligibility significantly

Food consumption patterns and their micronutrient content in India: Evidence from the household consumption expenditure surveys, 2011-12 and 2023-24.

BACKGROUND: India's food consumption landscape has transformed over the past decade, with implications for nutrition security. This article quantifies changes in household expenditure, consumption patterns across major food groups, and dietary sources of selected micronutrients. METHODS: Data from nationally representative Household Consumption Expenditure Surveys (HCES) 2011-12 and 2023-24 were analysed. Food quantities were standardised to adult female equivalents, and micronutrient intake was derived by linking food acquisition data to Indian Food Composition Tables. Models were fitted usi

#WeFeedYou… and yet: Comparing social determinants of health, food insecurity, and health among temporary migrant workers in Québec's agriculture and food manufacturing sectors-cross-sectional survey findings.

OBJECTIVE: Canada's agri-food system relies on temporary migrant workers (TMW), yet many experience precarious conditions and barriers to accessing adequate, nutritious food during their stay. Despite advocacy for improved conditions, empirical data on TMWs' food insecurity, and on several social determinants of health (SDoH), remain limited in Canada. We address this gap by comparing SDoH, including TMW living and working conditions, food insecurity, and health in Québec's agriculture and food manufacturing sectors. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was embedded within a multiple case study,

Interfaith Belonging and Spiritual Health: A Conceptual Analysis of Flourishing in a Religiously Diverse Philippines.

Religion-and-health scholarship often emphasizes religiosity and coping while giving less attention to how relationships across religious and worldview differences shape spiritual health. This conceptual study develops a Relational Interfaith Well-Being Framework for the religiously diverse Philippines. Using integrative, concept-driven thematic analysis, the study synthesizes empirical, theoretical, conceptual, and contextual literature and brings six lower-order themes, organized into three higher-order themes, into dialog with Intergroup Contact Theory and Social Identity Theory. Cash transfers targeting adolescent wellbeing: a scoping review of the literature in low- and middle-income countries.

Creating healthy food environments is central to improving adolescent nutrition; a life-stage characterised by rapid growth, body composition changes and heightened nutrient requirements. In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), cash transfer (CT) programmes are increasingly implemented as poverty-alleviation strategies to influence diet quality and related health behaviours by relaxing household budget constraints. While evidence demonstrates CT effects on nutrition and health in infancy and early childhood, few studies have evaluated their impact in adolescents in LMICs. We conducted a s

Effects of an agricultural intervention on psychosocial health among pregnant and nonpregnant women with HIV in Kenya.

OBJECTIVES: We examined whether effects of an agricultural livelihood intervention on food insecurity and psychosocial outcomes remained robust in pregnant compared to nonpregnant women living with HIV, and whether potentially negative associations between pregnancy and these outcomes were alleviated by the intervention. DESIGN: Secondary analysis of the Shamba Maisha cluster-randomized controlled trial ( N  = 396 women; NCT02815579). The intervention included agribusiness training and supplies. METHODS: Food insecure women with HIV in Kenya were followed for 24 months between 2016 and 2019.
