Authenticated social capital: conceptualising power, resistance and well-being in the lives of transgender older adults.

Trans people experience social marginalisation, stigmatisation and violent oppression in US society and worldwide. Given the importance of social capital for wellbeing, this study sought to illuminate the ways in which trans people build social capital throughout their lives and to use this knowledge to promote new and helpful ways of thinking about social capital concerning the human life course in the 21st century. We conducted a secondary interpretive content analysis of 86 in-depth interviews with trans older adults generated as part of the arts project To Survive on This Shore. Trans olde

METHODS: Data were from adults aged 50 to 80 years who completed the life history module in the 2006/2007 wave of the English Longitudinal Study of Aging (n = 4,553). The outcome, memory score, was based on word recall tests (range: 0-2

Justice-Involved Women and Cervical Cancer Disparities: Issues of Surveillance, Education, and Policy.

Incarceration affects an increasing number of women in the United States. For current and formerly incarcerated women (justice-involved women), incarceration has implications for health, particularly the reproductive health of women, long after incarceration is over. Currently, justice-involved women have a high cervical cancer burden relative to the general population, resulting in substantial disparities in incidence and outcomes. In this article, we review the surveillance, education, and resulting policy issues that contribute to incarceration being a determinant of cervical cancer dispari

Dimensions of health and social structure in the early intermediate period cemetery at Villa El Salvador, Peru.

This paper examines relationships between the social structure of a community and the health of its members, based on analysis of human skeletal remains (N = 64) from Villa El Salvador XII (100 BC-AD 100), a prehistoric cemetery located in the lower Lurín Valley, Peru. The ambiguity of social status as conventionally inferred from archaeological context is among the principal complicating factors in such an inquiry. We use multidimensional scaling of skeletal markers to identify the presence of patterned health-based heterogeneity in our sample, without making a priori assumptions about underl…

Editorial: Combatting the Intergenerational Trauma of Structural Racism Through Practice, Policy, and Research.

Several recent studies have investigated the mental health consequences of structural racism. Structural racism has been defined as "macro-level societal conditions that limit opportunities, resources, and well-being of less privileged groups on the basis of race/ethnicity and/or other statuses, including but not limited to, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability status, social class or socioeconomic status (SES), religion, geographic residence, national origin, immigration status, limited English proficiency, physical characteristics, or health conditions."1 Researchers have hypothes

Reproductive transitions and women's status in Indian households.

Using panel data, this study tracks the impact of reproductive transitions on women's status in the household in India. Here, status refers to the social benefits that women experience by meeting societal expectations related to childbearing. The analysis shows that becoming a mother is associated with increased freedom of movement and access to enabling resources. The adoption of permanent contraception-a common life course event marking the end of childbearing in India-is associated with increased freedom of movement but has no association with changes in access to enabling resources. Do different factors affect anxiety in persons with dementia based on their cognitive status?

While various factors can trigger anxiety in persons with dementia, there is limited information on whether these factors vary based on cognitive status. Therefore, this study aimed to examine factors associated with anxiety in persons with dementia by their cognitive status. Using data from the Round 12 of the NHATS, 1040 older adults were categorized into those with possible or probable dementia. Sociodemographic characteristics, pain, sleep problems, self-rated health, dependency in activities of daily living, social isolation, perceived social cohesion, and depression were included. While

Structural social factors modify the association between Alzheimer's pathology and cognitive function.

BACKGROUND: Social factors have been linked to cognitive decline and risk of dementia. However, our understanding of their impact on cognition in the context of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology is still limited. OBJECTIVES: This study examined whether two structural social factors, relationship status (RS) and living situation (LS), modify the association between AD pathology and cognition. DESIGN: Observational, analysis of existing cohort data. SETTING: Data were obtained from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center (NACC) and the Imaging Dementia-Evidence for Amyloid Scanning (IDE

Inst-Risk II: an approach to forecasting relative risk of future institutional placement.

This article describes a model development process that represents a useful step in classifying populations in terms of risk of institutionalization (Inst-Risk II). A four-category risk classification system--"High risk, Some risk, Low risk, and Very Low Risk"--was developed, based on combinations of measures of functional status, age, health status, demographics, and social supports. Our review of variables found by other researchers to be related to high risk of institutional placement, as well as our own research with Massachusetts elderly, confirmed functional impairment, diagnostic condit

Lost Legacies: The Dual Burden of Bereavement and Parenthood Under China's One-Child Policy.

This study examines the psychological impacts of only-child status and bereavement among older adults. Utilizing 2014-2020 China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (CLASS) data, the research assessed depression via the CESD-9 and social networks through the Lubben Social Network Scale-6. Findings reveal that while having an only child initially correlates with reduced depressive symptoms, losing that child significantly exacerbates mental health challenges and hinders social adaptation. This adverse interaction is primarily mediated by the shrinkage of family and friend networks. Heterogeneity a

Eye Gaze Patterns Associated with Aggressive Tendencies in Adolescence.

Social information processing theory hypothesizes that aggressive children pay more attention to cues of hostility and threat in others' behavior, consequently leading to over-interpretation of others' behavior as hostile. While there is abundant evidence of aggressive children demonstrating hostile attribution biases, less well documented is whether such biases stem from over-attendance and hypersensitivity to hostile cues in social situations. Over-attendance to hostile cues would be typified by deviations at any stage of the multi-stage process of social information processing models. While

Influence of social network on occurrence of dementia: a community-based longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Few data are available on the effect of social ties on dementia development. This study explored whether single social network components and different degrees of the social connections affect dementia incidence. METHODS: A community-based cohort of 1203 non-demented people, living at home in the Kungsholmen district of Stockholm, Sweden, and who had good cognition, was followed for an average period of 3 years. On the basis of medical and psychological data, 176 patients were diagnosed with dementia according to the criteria of the third edition revision of the Diagnostic and Sta

Vocational development of spinal cord injury patients: an 8-year follow-up.

This study determined the relationship between the vocational and educational plans, interests, work values, and rehabilitation outlook of patients with traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) and their vocational and social adjustment 8 years after first hospital discharge. While hospitalized the patients were given 15 measures of vocational development on a scale ranging from 13 to 52. Reliabilities (r) of the 15 measures ranged from r = 0.77 to r = 0.96, with the average reliability of the scale measured at 0.88. Eight years after discharge each patient was sent a questionnaire covering his/her
