Cooperative Networks: Altruism, Group Solidarity, Reciprocity, and Sanctioning in Ugandan Producer Organizations.

Repeated interaction and social networks are commonly considered viable solutions to collective action problems. This article identifies and systematically measures four general mechanisms--that is, generalized altruism, group solidarity, reciprocity, and the threat of sanctioning--and tests which of them brings about cooperation in the context of Ugandan producer organizations. Using an innovative methodological framework that combines "lab-in-the-field" experiments with survey interviews and complete social networks data, the article goes beyond the assessment of a relationship between socia

Cohort Profile: The Malawi Longitudinal Study of Families and Health (MLSFH).

The Malawi Longitudinal Study of Families and Health (MLSFH) is one of very few long-standing, publicly available longitudinal cohort studies in a sub-Saharan African (SSA) context. It provides a rare record of more than a decade of demographic, socioeconomic and health conditions in one of the world's poorest countries. The MLSFH was initially established in 1998 to study social network influences on fertility behaviours and HIV risk perceptions, and over time the focus of the study expanded to include health, sexual behaviours, intergenerational relations and family/household dynamics. The c

Social narratives in agenesis of the corpus callosum: linguistic analysis of the Thematic Apperception Test.

In a previous study, individuals with agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) with normal intelligence provided narratives to pictures from the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) that were limited in logical coherence and social awareness. The current study examined the linguistic content of TAT stories from 22 persons with isolated complete ACC compared to 30 IQ- and age-matched controls using the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (Pennebaker et al., 2001). Compared to controls, individuals with ACC used fewer words pertaining to emotionality, cognitive processes, and social processes. They also

Factor structure evaluation of the childhood autism rating scale.

This study investigated the factor structure of the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS). Principal components analysis (PCA) and principal axis factor analysis (PAF) evaluated archival data from children presenting to a university clinic with suspected autism spectrum disorders (ASDs; N = 164). PCA did not replicate components identified by DiLalla and Rogers (1994, Domains of the Childhood Autism Rating Scale: Relevance for diagnosis and treatment. Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 24(2), 115-128) and Stella, Mundy, and Tuchman (1999, Social and nonsocial factors in the Childhoo

Interpersonal counselling in general practice.

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal counselling (IPC) derives from interpersonal psycho-therapy (IPT) but is briefer in the number and duration of sessions and is particularly suited to the primary care setting. While depression and other psychological symptoms are not necessarily 'caused' by interpersonal problems, they do occur in a social and interpersonal context. Problem areas commonly associated with the onset of depression are unresolved grief, interpersonal disputes, role transition and interpersonal deficits such as social isolation. OBJECTIVE: This article discusses IPC and how it can be used

[Typology of the defect in patients with non-manifest schizophrenia (clinico-psychological study)].

A comprehensive examination of the defect at long-term stages of the course of non-manifest schizophrenia with a decrease in social adaptation showed that its nature was not uniform in relation to both the clinical structure and specific psychological parameters. The results demonstrated that the two different types of the defect, "torpid fanatics" and "dependent personalities", correlated with the internal and external locus control. Specific features of social adaptation corresponding to the developed typology were also specified: preservation of the formal orientation on the social norms an

BACKGROUND: The Consensus on subdomains and measures of Affective and Social cognition for research on Bipolar Disorder (CAS-BD) project aimed to formulate preliminary consensus-based recommendations for assessing affective and social cognition in BD. METHODS: Three sequential surveys administered to experts on affective and social cognition in BD were conducted using the Delphi process. Experts responded to questions regarding affective and social cognition subdomains and rated their importance to research on BD. Experts also nominated measures, rated them for suitability, and ranked them by

Reduced amygdalar and hippocampal size in adults with generalized social phobia.

BACKGROUND: Structural and functional brain imaging studies suggest abnormalities of the amygdala and hippocampus in posttraumatic stress disorder and major depressive disorder. However, structural brain imaging studies in social phobia are lacking. METHODS: In total, 24 patients with generalized social phobia (GSP) and 24 healthy controls underwent 3-dimensional structural magnetic resonance imaging of the amygdala and hippocampus and a clinical investigation. RESULTS: Compared with controls, GSP patients had significantly reduced amygdalar (13%) and hippocampal (8%) size. The reduction in

A confirmatory factor analysis of a self-report version of the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale.

One of the most popular measures of social phobia is the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS; Liebowitz, 1987). The LSAS is a 24-item semi-structured interview measure of fear and avoidance experienced in a range of social and performance situations. Recently, the LSAS has been modified to a self-report version (LSAS-SR) by several independent groups (Cox, Ross, Swinson, & Direnfeld, 1998; Fresco et al., 2001; Mancini, Van Ameringen, & Oakman, 1999). A self-report version offers ease of administration, but it may differ from the structured interview version in its psychometric properties. We

Sedentary behaviour and social anxiety in obese individuals: the mediating role of body esteem.

Given that the prevalence of social anxiety in obese individuals is high, it is necessary that we increase our knowledge about the related factors that cause social anxiety in obese individuals. The present study sought to examine the role of body esteem as a mediator between sedentary behaviour and social anxiety. The participants were 207 overweight and obese individuals who completed the self-report measures. The structural equation modelling displayed that obese individuals with sedentary behaviour and poor body esteem were more likely to show social anxiety. Body esteem partially mediated

Neuroanatomical correlates of individual differences in social anxiety in a non-clinical population.

Socially anxious individuals are characterized as those with distorted negative self-beliefs (NSBs), which are thought to enhance reactions of social distress (emotional reactivity) and social avoidance (social functioning). However, it remains unclear whether individual differences in social distress and social avoidance are represented by differences in brain morphometry. To probe into these neural correlates, we analyzed magnetic resonance images of a sample of 130 healthy subjects and used the Connectome Computation System (CCS) to evaluate these factors. The results showed that social dis

Social anxiety and eating disorder comorbidity: the role of negative social evaluation fears.

Social anxiety and eating disorders are highly comorbid. However, it is unknown how specific domains of social anxiety relate to disordered eating. We provide data on these relationships and investigate social appearance anxiety and fear of negative evaluation as potential vulnerabilities linking social anxiety with disordered eating. Specifically, we examined five domains of social anxiety: Social interaction anxiety, fear of scrutiny, fear of positive evaluation, fear of negative evaluation, and social appearance anxiety. Results indicated that social appearance anxiety predicted body dissat

Homeless people: Images and imaginaries.

This article argues that the construction of social imaginaries around homelessness, which usually focus on the individual variables involved in situations of exclusion, have given way to a broader understanding of homelessness as part of a process of residential exclusion of structural scope. However, both imaginaries, that of the individual causes and that of the structural causes of homelessness, struggle in social practice. Thus, we start from the idea that the different social imaginaries around homelessness are related, in a dialectic way, with the images, produced by different media, of

Role of Structural Marginalization, HIV Stigma, and Mistrust on HIV Prevention and Treatment Among Young Black Latinx Men Who Have Sex with Men and Transgender Women: Perspectives from Youth Service Providers.

Young black and Latinx men who have sex with men (YBLMSM) and transgender women (YBLTW) are disproportionately impacted by HIV. Structural and social marginalization, the social barriers, and structures that unevenly distribute benefits and burdens to different groups, may contribute to inability for youth to access prevention and treatment care services. Yet, few reports have examined the community and health care experiences of social marginalization among youth service providers who have multiple roles in the community (i.e., serve as a service provider and are a member or prior member of t

Inequalities in Severe Maternal Morbidity and Mortality in High-Income Countries: Patterns, Drivers, and Pathways to Action.

Inequalities in severe maternal morbidity (SMM) and mortality in high-income countries are persistent, socially patterned, and evident across multiple dimensions, including socioeconomic deprivation, race and ethnicity, and migration status. These inequalities are not fully explained by individual clinical risk factors but arise from the interaction of structural disadvantage, intermediate social conditions, and health systems. Many determinants of risk are established before pregnancy; however, variation in access to care, quality of care, and responsiveness to symptoms during pregnancy and c

A hybrid model of social phobia: an analysis of social anxiety and related symptoms of anxiety.

The categorical underpinnings of the current diagnostic nomenclature have been the subject of repeated criticism. Recently, researchers have proposed several alternatives to the current system, including hybrid models of combined diagnostic categories and symptom dimensions. In the present study, we investigated the symptoms associated with a hybrid model of social phobia. The study included (a) the development of the initial set of symptom dimensions, generation of an item pool, and review by an expert panel, and (b) data collection and component analysis of the item pool to determine the str

Social class, prenatal care, maternal age and parity: a study of their interrelation in six Italian centres.

"Multiple Correspondence Analysis was used to describe the complex structure formed by those sociodemographic variables, whose association with the occurrence of prenatal and neonatal deaths and diseases has been most frequently stressed in literature: social class, prenatal care, maternal age and parity. The study regards 41,537 women included in a multicentre survey of perinatal preventive medicine, which was carried out, between 1973 and 1979, in six Italian centres...." It is found that "in all centres there are distinct groups of women characterized by a set of unfavourable factors closel

[Clinico-psychopathologic analysis of so-called juvenile asthenic incompetence].

On the material of 72 young students, the author describes psychopathological manifestations of atypical juvenile subdepressions defined in the literature as "asthenic juvenile deficiency". It has been shown that the syndrome has a polymorphic structure, is usually endogenic but does not posses nosological specificity. Cognitive dicturbances due to vital asthenia and a vital change of affectiveness are predominant manifestations which lead to social disadaptation. Early diagnosis and adequate therapy makes it possible in most cases to compensate for the pathological condition in the outpatient
