Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma mimicking mucinous ovarian cancer: A case report.

Pelvic masses can represent various etiologies, including gynecologic and non-gynecologic conditions. As discussed in this paper, among all pathologies, intraabdominal dissemination of an extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma (ESMC) presenting as a pelvic mass is a rare condition. The case is a 58-year-old woman with a history of soft tissue sarcoma who presented to the gynecologic oncology department with a pelvic mass and was operated on with the suspicion of mucinous ovarian cancer. She underwent complete cytoreductive surgery, and her final pathology was reported as ESMC. Due to several numb

Modified palatal flap via soft palate for skull base reconstruction.

OBJECTIVE: Given the importance of vascularized flaps, this study presents a new technique for reconstructing skull defects using a pedicled palatal flap via the soft palate. METHODS: Five preserved cadaveric specimens were used to demonstrate the sequential steps involved in harvesting the palatal flap. In addition, 20 normal paranasal sinus computed tomography scans were analyzed to determine potential measurements of the flap (area, perimeter, greatest anteroposterior distance, and greatest transverse distance). RESULTS: The average flap area in females and males was 11.8cm2 and 12.7cm2,

A Rare Case of Recurrent Intra-abdominal Desmoid-Type Fibromatosis.

Desmoid-type fibromatosis is an uncommon fibroblastic or myofibroblastic tumour arising in deep soft tissues with no metastatic potential. This case report presents a 78-year-old male patient with an incidental finding of desmoid-type fibromatosis of the abdomen with recurrence within two years and required surgical interventions. Primarily, a computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen and pelvis showed an incidental finding of a large soft tissue mass in the right iliac fossa mesentery measuring 11 by 8.5 cm. The patient underwent a successful elective exploratory laparotomy and resection of the

Adult Sinonasal Rhabdomyosarcoma With Spinal Metastasis: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a malignant soft-tissue tumor mainly seen in the pediatric population. Here, we describe a case of an aggressive sinonasal RMS with distant metastasis in an adult patient. A 51-year-old male presented to the otolaryngology clinic with a unilateral painless neck mass and nasal obstruction. A flexible transnasal endoscope showed a huge fungating mass obstructing more than 80% of the right nasal cavity. A contrasted computed tomography (CT) scan of the paranasal sinuses showed an enhancing soft-tissue density mass involving the right nasal cavity. A biopsy revealed RMS,

Necrotizing fasciitis of the lower extremity secondary to a perforated rectosigmoid tumor.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF), which is a rare but life-threatening soft tissue infection, can present as a complication of colorectal diseases. The development of NF of the lower extremity secondary to a perforated colorectal tumor has been reported in only a few patients. We present a case of a 68-year-old woman, in which necrotizing soft tissue infection of the left lower extremity was the presenting feature of a perforated rectosigmoid tumor. On examination, there was a tender swelling and edema with palpable crepitus in the left inguinal region and thigh. Computed tomography showed gas withi

A Pitfall in Prenatal Ultrasonic Detection of Submucous Cleft Palate.

OBJECTIVE: We present a case with prenatal diagnosis of submucous cleft palate (SMCP) which was described using 2- and 3-dimensional (3D) ultrasonography in utero. CASE REPORT: A 25-year-old pregnant woman was referred to our department for fetal ultrasound screening. After the detection of cardiac and spinal malformations of fetal, further detailed examination detected SMCP, which showed a gap within the hard palate on axial transversal view with the soft palate visible on sagittal view. The imaging of a defective hard palate in prenatal 3D ultrasonography is similar to that in postmortem 3D

Ballistic impacts on an anatomically correct synthetic skull with a surrogate skin/soft tissue layer.

The aim of this work was to further develop a synthetic model of ballistic head injury by the addition of skin and soft tissue layers to an anatomically correct polyurethane skull filled with gelatine 10% by mass. Six head models were impacted with 7.62 x 39 mm full metal jacket mild steel core (FMJ MSC) bullets with a mean velocity of 652 m/s. The impact events were filmed with high-speed cameras. The models were imaged pre- and post-impact using computed tomography. The models were assessed post impact by two experienced Home Office pathologists and the images assessed by an experienced mili

Lymphocytic colitis complicated by a mass in the terminal ileum.

Lymphocytic colitis is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the bowel. The clinical course of lymphocytic colitis is believed to be benign with watery diarrhoea. We report herein what is, to the best of our knowledge, the first case of lymphocytic colitis complicated by a terminal ileal mass. A 23-year-old man presented with diarrhoea. Blind biopsies of samples taken from the terminal ileum, caecum and ascending colon showed features of lymphocytic colitis. He declined treatment with budesonide or 5-aminosalicylates. He presented 14 months later with pain over the right lumbar region and n

A case of alveolar soft part sarcoma of the pleura.

Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) is a rare malignant soft-tissue neoplasm of unknown histogenesis. The two main sites of occurrence are the lower extremities in adults and the head and neck in children. We report the first case of pleural ASPS occurring in a 58-yr-old man who presented with progressive dyspnea. A computed tomographic scan of the thorax revealed a large enhancing pleural mass with pleural effusion in the left hemithorax. Wide excision of the pleural mass was performed. Histologically, the tumor consisted of organoid nests of large polygonal cells, the cytoplasm of which had eo

Dual energy CT: added value in gouty arthritis.

Gouty arthritis is an inflammatory reaction as a result of monosodium urate crystal deposition in synovial fluid and periarticular soft tissue. It is the most common form of inflammatory arthritis with an estimated prevalence of 5 per 1000 in the USA. Clinical diagnosis is difficult and definite diagnosis with positive urate crystal aspiration often is made late in the disease process. Dual energy computer tomography (DECT) is a relative new non-invasive imaging modality that is able to distinguish urate crystals from calcium in soft tissue and synovial fluid. In this case report we describe t

CT features of synovial chondromatosis in the temporomandibular joint.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristic computed tomography (CT) findings of synovial chondromatosis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). STUDY DESIGN: Eight subjects with synovial chondromatosis were examined with axial and coronal CT scans. All lesions were histopathologically confirmed either through an arthroscopic punch biopsy or surgery. CT appearances of the lesions were reviewed and classified. RESULTS: Among the 8 subjects, 7 (87.5%) demonstrated soft tissue swelling, 7 (87.5%) showed loose calcified bodies, and 6 (75%) had bony changes of the artic

Bone scan appearance in aggressive osteogenic sarcoma with pleural, lung, bone, and soft-tissue metastases.

A 40-year-old woman presented with a known case of osteogenic sarcoma of the right leg and underwent below-the-knee amputation. The preoperative workup was negative for distant metastases, and the patient was followed regularly. Two years later she developed dyspnea and chest pain. Computed tomography revealed diffuse left lung metastases with pleural involvement and nodular metastases in the right lung. Tc-99m methylene diphosphonate whole-body bone scanning revealed the amputated right leg with a clean stump but with widespread metastases in the right thigh involving soft tissue and bone, an

A case of chronic expanding hematoma in the tensor fascia lata.

We describe a patient in whom a chronic expanding hematoma was pathologically confirmed by examination of the resected specimen. It developed gradually in the left lateral thigh, which had been bruised 8 months before, but had produced no mass-related symptoms initially. Computed tomography (CT) showed the mass to be homogeneous with capsule formation, whereas ultrasonography showed it to resemble a multilocular cyst. The lesion was treated by complete excision of a perifascial mass. Grossly, a well-circumscribed, fusiform mass with a soft cystic center and a fibrous pseudocapsule was observed

Myelopathy due to scoliosis with vertebral hypertrophy in Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome.

We describe a 37-year-old man complaining of right back pain and gait disturbance. He had a big soft tumor on his right back, hemihypertrophy of the right lower extremity, and right thoracic scoliosis. We diagnosed Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome based on the pathological findings of the soft tumor. Computed tomography (CT) scan revealed severe spinal stenosis due to a hypertrophic vertebral body and facet joint at T7. Treatment by decompression of hypertrophic bone led to complete neurological recovery. To our knowledge, no case has been reported of Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome with myel

Necrotizing otitis externa due to Aspergillus in an immunocompetent patient.

An 85-year-old, nondiabetic man is described with necrotizing (malignant) otitis externa. The patient developed facial nerve paralysis in the presence of a progressive cellulitis and chondritis of the external auditory meatus. Destruction of the bony meatus and mastoid and obliteration of normal soft-tissue planes at the skull base were documented by computed tomographic scans. Aspergillus fumigatus was isolated from the external meatus and deep tissue specimens. Fungal invasion of bone and soft tissue was confirmed histopathologically. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was never isolated. This case is u

Endobronchial angioleiomyoma: Diagnostic difficulties of a rare lung neoplasm.

Angioleiomyoma is a benign soft-tissue tumor that rarely develops in the respiratory tract. Here, we report a case of a 51-year-old female with an angioleiomyoma developed in the left lobar bronchial branch and extended to the left principal bronchus, causing nonspecific symptoms, and not visible on the chest X-ray examination. The suspected diagnosis was established by high-resolution computed tomography and confirmed by the histological evaluation of the endoscopically removed lesion.

A Case of Phlebectasia in a Child Presenting With Neck Mass.

Jugular phlebectasia is an enlargement of the jugular vein that manifests as a soft, cystic lump in the neck which can be compressed, becomes prominent on crying or straining and disappears on rest. It needs to be distinguished from laryngocele, neck cysts, and tumours that can also develop with straining. We report a case of a seven-year-old boy presenting with a cervical cystic mass. Comparable computed tomography and ultrasonography findings helped identify the pathology.

Giant thymolipoma: case report of an unusual mediastinal tumor.

Thymolipoma is an uncommon benign neoplasm of the thymus composed of mature adipose and thymic tissue. The diagnosis of thymolipoma should be considered in the case of a mediastinal mass with fat density, especially if it is interspersed with strands of soft tissue attenuation on computed tomography scans. However, it is sometimes difficult to differentiate radiologically between a thymolipoma and other mediastinal fatty tumors. Here we present a patient with a huge mediastinal mass that proved to be a thymolipoma.

An unusual location of juvenile angiofibroma: a case report and review of the literature.

A 10-year-old boy presented with left-sided nasal obstruction and epistaxis. Endoscopic evaluation revealed a polypoid mass in the vestibule arising from the lateral wall of the nasal cavity anteroinferior to the left inferior turbinate. Computed tomography (CT) scan showed a soft tissue opacity in the vestibule of the left nasal cavity. After the endoscopic excision of the mass, postoperative and histopathological analyses confirmed the diagnosis of an angiofibroma.
