This study investigates time-dependent sorption of pesticides in soil aggregates. We tested if the sorption kinetics of pesticides in soil aggregates can be described by modeling diffusion into aggregates for a range of soils and pesticides. Our hypothesis is that the rate of sorption is negatively related to sorption strength due to retardated diffusion. In this study, hydrolysis, degradation and sorption of dhurrin (4-hydroxymandelonitrile-beta-d-glucoside) produced by sorghum has been studied in order to assess its fate in soil. The degradation of imazapyr in non-sterile and sterile soils from four sampling sites in Zhejiang, China was studied. The results showed that the half-lives of imazapyr in non-sterile soils were in the range of 30 to 45 d, while 81 to 133 d in sterile (by autoclaving) soils. We studied the presence of botulinum toxin-producing clostridia in 2,009 soil samples from five geographical regions of Argentina. The prevalence was 23.5%, and the distribution was not homogeneous among the regions. We observed a great multiplicity of serological types and a higher prevalence in nonvirgin soils than in virgin soils.

Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), its main metabolites, and other organochlorines were analyzed in soils (n=6), fluvial sediments (n=14), and fish (n=10) that were collected in several areas of the Amazon region in Brazil. The samples were analyzed by capillary column gas chromatography coupled to electron capture detection. DDT residues were present in most of the collected sediments in concentrations of approximately 10 to 100 micro/kg (ppb, dry weight). Some urban top soils were found to have more than 1 mg/kg (ppm). The sorption-desorption behavior and long-term fate of hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) was examined in sterilized and nonsterilized topsoil. Results of this study indicate that although RDX is not extensively sorbed by the topsoil (Ks(d) of 0.83 L/kg), sorption is nearly irreversible. In this study, using the API-ZYM system, we have reported the enzyme profile of 42 soil strains and 2 clinical strains of Nocardia asteroides isolated locally. Of the 19 enzymes tested, only 7 were demonstrable in over 90% of the soil isolates. These included alkaline phosphatase, esterase lipase, leucine arylamidase, acid phosphatase, phosphohydrolase, alpha-glucosidase and beta-glucosidase.
