Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS): a non-invasive in vivo methodology for analysis of brain vascular and metabolic activities in real time in rodents.

Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) was first used as a tool for the in vivo monitoring of tissue oxygenation in the late seventies. Today, NIRS instruments are more and more used in clinical environments since they are now easy to use, sensitive, robust, provide rapid analysis and could be complementary to other non invasive methodologies such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and positron emission tomography (PET). The feasibility of non-invasive analysis of brain activities is studied in the attempt to overcome the major limitation of invasive in vivo methodologies. In the prese

Different doses of dopamine have heterogeneous effects on cerebral hemodynamics and dopamine receptors in young rabbits as measured with near infrared spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Fluctuations in cerebral blood volume and cerebral oxygenation may be important in the pathogenesis of intraventricular hemorrhage and hypoxic-ischemic brain injury in the neonate. The cerebral hemodynamic response to dopamine infusion in premature infants is not well established. The newborn rabbit, a rather immature species at birth, is a suitable model for monitoring the physiological changes of the cerebral circulation. METHODS: The effect of dopamine upon cerebral hemodynamics and basal ganglia dopaminergic receptors were studied using four different dopamine doses. RESULTS:

Data fusion of high-performance liquid chromatography and near-infrared spectroscopy with explainable machine learning for commercial origin authentication of Cimicifugae Rhizoma.

Multi-instrument data fusion combined with explainable machine learning offers a powerful strategy for complex sample authentication, yet quantitative attribution of each analytical source's contribution remains an unresolved methodological challenge. This study presents a two-platform data fusion framework integrating high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection (providing both untargeted chromatographic fingerprints and targeted phenolic acid markers) and near-infrared spectroscopy, and employs SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) TreeExplainer for quantitative source-le

WSPSorter: a real-time integrated system for non-destructive purity sorting of watermelon seeds based on rotary singulation and near infrared spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Watermelon seed purity is a critical determinant of varietal authenticity and production quality. In hybrid seed production, however, distinguishing between maternal seeds and hybrid seeds at the single-seed level remains challenging because their phenotypic differences are subtle. Conventional purity identification methods are often destructive, labor-intensive, and time-consuming and are poorly suited to the practical demand for rapid, continuous, single-seed online sorting. METHODS: To address these challenges, this study developed the Watermelon Seed Purity Sorter (WSPSorter),

Monitoring production processes of pharmaceuticals and farm chemicals with near-infrared spectroscopy coupled with the interaction moving window partial least squares method.

Online near-infrared spectroscopy is utilized to monitor pharmaceutical and farm chemical production processes. To improve model performance, interval interaction moving window partial least squares (iMWPLS) is used for wavelength selection. As a modified version of moving window partial least squares (MWPLS), iMWPLS may accurately screen out intervals and optimize the combination of the spectral intervals by iteratively accomplishing MWPLS on the selected intervals. Two online NIR datasets generated during the aspirin synthesis and dichloroacetophenone production processes are subjected to mu

Cerebral oxygenation responses to obstructive sleep apnea in cognitively normal older adults: a study using simultaneous polysomnography and functional near-infrared spectroscopy.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) can cause intermittent cerebral hypoxia that may impair brain health. However, widely used clinical indicators such as the Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) and peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO₂) may not accurately capture cerebral oxygen dynamics. In this study, we recorded frontal lobe cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO₂) using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) while concurrently acquiring overnight polysomnography (PSG) in 23 cognitively normal older adults (13 with OSA and 10 controls). Our results demonstrated that rSO₂ was negatively associated with apnea

Near-infrared spectroscopy combined with vascular occlusion test to predict acute kidney injury in patients undergoing cardiac surgery: a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) enables a non-invasive measurement of tissue oxygen saturation (StO2) in regions illuminated by near-infrared lights. Vascular occlusion test (VOT) serves as a model to artificially induce forearm ischemia-reperfusion. The combination of StO2 monitoring and VOT allows for dynamic evaluation of the balance between oxygen delivery and consumption in tissue, as well as the functional reserve of microcirculation. However, the implications of these measurements for patient outcomes remain inadequately understood. This study aimed to investigate the asso

Assessing Task-Dependent Neurophysiology During Virtual Reality Treadmill Training in Adults With Traumatic Brain Injury: A Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Feasibility Study.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) often experience residual mobility deficits that can be improved with treadmill and virtual reality interventions. However, previous studies have not measured the underlying neurophysiology during these interventions nor assessed if acquiring such data is feasible in a TBI population. Thus, the primary purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of using portable functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to measure neurophysiology during a treadmill task and a treadmill with virtual reality task. SETTING: Data were collected

Correlation Between Cerebral Near-Infrared Spectroscopy and Hoffman Index With Central Venous Saturation in Children who Underwent Surgery for Congenital Heart Disease.

Background: After surgical repair of congenital heart disease with cardiopulmonary bypass, it is common for patients to present with a decrease in cardiac output with hemodynamic instability. Treatment goals should focus on achieving a balance between tissue oxygen availability and consumption. Central venous saturation (SvO2) provides valuable information about hemodynamics and global perfusion; however, it is not continuous and it is invasive. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a noninvasive technology that allows immediate and continuous monitoring of regional oxygen extraction and consum

Effect of Extracerebral Contamination on Near-infrared Spectroscopy as Revealed during Organ Donation: A Prospective Observational Study in Brain-dead Organ Donors.

BACKGROUND: Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has been utilized widely in anesthesia and intensive care to monitor regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rScO2). A normal oxygenation of extracerebral tissues may overlay and thereby mask cerebral desaturations, a phenomenon known as extracerebral contamination. The authors investigated the effect of a cessation of extracerebral tissue perfusion on rScO2 in patients with anoxic brains. METHODS: In a single-center, prospective, observational study, brain-dead adults undergoing organ donation were investigated. rScO2 was measured bifrontally using

Hemodynamic signal changes during volitional swallowing in dysphagia patients with different unilateral hemispheric stroke and brainstem stroke: A near-infrared spectroscopy study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Strokes will result in decreased in cortical excitability and changed in the balance between the affected and unaffected hemispheres. Previous studies have focused on cortical changes in healthy subjects during swallowing, while they remain unknown in patients with stroke at different locations. Thus, the purpose of this study was to research cortical activation patterns of swallowing in patients with dysphagia and healthy subjects by the functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). We also focus on the comparability of brain activation areas associated with swallo

Associations between frontal lobe activity and depressive symptoms in patients with major depressive disorder receiving rTMS treatment: a near-infrared spectroscopy study.

INTRODUCTION: The effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) have been proved to have antidepressant effects. However, the absence of biomarkers to assess treatment response remains a challenge. This research aims to explore the relationship between frontal lobe activity, measured using near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), and changes in symptoms among MDD patients following rTMS treatment. METHODS: A total of 26 MDD patients underwent 20 sessions of 10  Hz rTMS targeting the

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy guided mapping of frontal cortex, a novel modality for assessing emergence delirium in children: A prospective observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Despite an 18%-30% prevalence, there is no consensus regarding pathogenesis of emergence delirium after anesthesia in children. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is an optical neuroimaging modality that relies on blood oxygen level-dependent response, translating to a mean increase in oxyhemoglobin and a decrease in deoxyhemoglobin. We aimed to correlate the emergence delirium in the postoperative period with the changes in the frontal cortex utilizing fNIRS reading primarily and also with blood glucose, serum electrolytes, and preoperative anxiety scores. METHODS: A

Epinephrine iontophoresis attenuates changes in skin blood flow and abolishes cutaneous contamination of near-infrared diffuse correlation spectroscopy estimations of muscle perfusion.

Near-infrared diffuse correlation spectroscopy (NIR-DCS) is an optical imaging technique for measuring relative changes in skeletal muscle microvascular perfusion (i.e., fold change above baseline) during reactive hyperemia testing and exercise and is reported as a blood flow index (BFI). Although it is generally accepted that changes in BFI are primarily driven by changes in muscle perfusion, it is well known that large, hyperthermia-induced changes in cutaneous blood flow can uncouple this relationship. What remains unknown, is how much of an impact that changes in cutaneous perfusion have o
